So next year the X will be replaced by the Xs! Excess perhaps isn't a great choice for a name.
No.... what the hell makes you and others think that this is a new line of iPhone that will continue into the future??? It is an anniversary model, it is not designed to be a new line. Next year will be the standard lineup that we’ve come to expect.

Studios have traditionally used roman numerals for the copyright dates at the end of their films/programs as it's not as easy to see how old it is, maybe Apple are going to start using roman numerals going forward for the same reason?

Me, I'm looking forward to the iPhone XVIII (though might leave it another year for the S)

So we're going to have an "eight" and a "ten" at the same time?

I really can't see that happening.
Going with just ‘X’, it would likely be pronounced ‘ex’ to avoid that issue, and let’s face it the millions of consumers that read the name aren’t going to see it as ‘iPhone 10’ anyway, especially with an 8 in the lineup.

It's gotta be iPhone Pro, surely.
You’ve gotta be joking! Pro made no sense (although more sense than 8).

I don't know why anyone would want anything but the X, besides price and maybe size... but I doubt it will actually be THAT much more expensive than the 8 models.

In the Uk I managed to yesterday pick up an iPhone 7 Plus 256GB Jet Black for £615 brand new and sealed, the RRP is £919. Rumours of the iPhone X being £1199 for 256GB..... that's a difference of £584! So the question is what will the iPhone 8 or X have to justify such a massive difference in pricing?!

I've added a :) to make it more obvious it was a joke. But there is a question of what they will call the model next year, as the X form-factor is almost certain to remain (or an evolution of it). Perhaps it is time to change to calling it after the model year?

Weird. What's going to make them "8" instead of 7s? I wonder if this means they plan on keeping a TouchID/home button version of the iPhone around indefinitely.

Could be a sign that the built in touch ID under the display will be ready next year...no way will everyone accept Face ID. There are use cases for both but Touch ID still has it's purposes.

Comparing RRP is fairer, as the 7 plus was RRP everywhere when it came out, and people want the new shiny, not end-of-line, but it is still a big leap. It does look like the biggest step for a while, but the relative stagnation made the outgoing model look overpriced, hence being able to get it at the cheaper price you did. Some of the components are going to be more expensive, but I'm only going to be guessing on that, and it is a guess on the new price, and a guess on the exact features, so I would only be guessing on the justification.

Its one of the big things for me. If there is any level of having to hold the phone up to your face that is going to be a problem for a lot of people if it has no Touch ID.

Oh I see :D. I just get annoyed around the confusion of the models now, I shouldn’t really since it’s the media and some YouTubers that I’m angry at for causing the confusion. Yeah the naming is a big question if they go with 8 for the 7S models, since all models would be receiving the form factor the name would have to be significantly different (I.e. not S). Although since they have the X design, it could actually be a continuation of the ‘X’, so X1 or something like that (and there would be no more numbered iPhones). I’m not a fan of that but it would reset the naming.

This year =
8 --- 8 Plus --- X.
Next year (when/if OLED supply increases) =
X2 --- X2 Plus.

Yeah, I could see it working like this. Either way, I think it was smart to go straight to 8. I know it’s just a name, but all the phones have been redesigned, and releasing 7S models next to the X model (or 8) would have made them seem outdated before they’d even hit the shelves.

My guess is the new OLED display and Face ID will be the main differentiating factors of the X model (maybe some camera differences in the 8 Plus and X models). Internally they should be pretty similar. Surely they’ll all be running the same chip.

For pricing: they could price the 8 Plus with 649$ so the upgrade program would work, or not?

I understand that. I was more getting at the difference between the MacBook and MacBook Pro naming and what features really make them different. I think that the 'Pro' name has a different meaning these days. Just look at the PS4 Pro for example.

It's simple marketing. But again, the term "Pro" doesn't make a cellular device any more Pro, aside from its core purpose. The MacBook Pro is a legitimate productivity tool used completing more user based tasks.

Given that its being held at the Steve Jobs Theatre I wonder if there is any chance of Phil Schiller being dropped from a great height in Steves memory? Fingers crossed eh?

On a serious note I hope they take a minute to pay tribute to him, he would probably have hated that but it would be a nice touch.
