So then: new numbers are now used for incremental updates? Or are numbers going away entirely after this? What will they call the 10th iPhone? Are they just skipping number 9 because this one is such a big leap (I bet they'll say something like that during the keynote).

Hmmm, I don't think these will be the names.

If we get another iteration of the iPhone 6 design (6S, 7..) and skip the 7S name and they call it an 8 when it's really a 6SSS, the internet will explode with calls of foul play.

There's no way Apple will foist a 6SSS on us, skip the 7S moniker, and call it an 8. Ain't gunna happen.

Hilarious if the '7s' is now the 8... does the forum want to consider a huge 'find and replace' operation...? :D

I still favour the name iPhone NotchyNotch for the new fancy one.

It's simple marketing. But again, the term "Pro" doesn't make a cellular device any more Pro, aside from its core purpose. The MacBook Pro is a legitimate productivity tool used completing more user based tasks.

What about P.A.s? Secretaries? Agents? All kinds of professionals need good communications as core tools of their jobs as much as a final cut editor needs a beefy laptop, I don't get your apparently narrow definition of what makes someone a productive professional, or 'Pro'. Why do you limit that term to what people use Macbook Pros for?

If the technologies and specifications make the device better and more reliable at communicating for people who need that to be the best it can be, I see no reason why that couldn't be deemed 'Pro'. Whatever Apple call this thing.

There are 4 models and Android is a operating system not an actual product.

Lol, ok... so- please name all the Samsung ONLY smartphones that run the Android operating system, have the word “Galaxy” in the name, & were released in the last 18 months.
My guess is there’s between 8-15 that fall even in that highly narrowed category.

Seems Apple doesnt want people with the lower tier LCD phones to think they are inferior to the iPhone X in any way and hence skipping the S moniker. Psychological marketing

Yep, and iPhone “eX” rather than “Ten”

I prefer the symmetry too

X
8

(and insert Infinite Loop symbol)

I am most curious in how the naming of all the devices in the future will be handled...looks like Apple will still keep the numbers for their non-flagship phones and possibly a new naming structure for an iPhone after this so-called "iPhone X"...

I understand what you Mean. But strictly an iPhone for "Pro" purposes doesn't make sense to me. I see it as Apple never even considered the OLED model to be Pro. Think about that, so they name this iPhone "Pro" just for this year, for what purpose? Are the following iPhone OLED future models be named Pro as well. Apple's marketing seems more clever than this and I don't believe the Pro moniker was even a consideration with this OLED model.

I don't know why anyone would want anything but the X, besides price and maybe size... but I doubt it will actually be THAT much more expensive than the 8 models.

A rumored difference of $350 is a lot. That's ~50% over your base model.

I think it will be iPhone Edition. If they call it iPhone X (ten), then what happens in 2 years time?

Bingo... start creating serious branding for high end consumer devices (where "pro" doesn't make sense). "Edition" is a great name for the high end watch and they could do the same here. Completely separate it from the regular iPhone line.

iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and iPhone Edition.

It also starts to eliminate the numbering schemes which ultimately become a problem.

Makes perfect sense.
I could never imagine them launching 7s and 8 together.
No one would feel good about buying a 7s when 8 is released alongside.

I always liked the "X" name.
Now I'm wondering what iPhone 10 will be called in a few years. I guess "10?"

I think they’re going to get away from numbering models after this cycle, at least in the way they’ve been doing it. We’re getting to a point where it’s redundant, especially past iPhone 10.

iPhone 12? iPhone 14? That sounds so clunky to me.

X2 has a nice ring to it, but who knows.

Perfect naming scheme, IMO.

And, if they lower the price of the "regular" 8's, Android OEMs will be in serious trouble, as the only thing that keeps them afloat is the price umbrella that Apple gently provided thus far.

Apple to lower prices? You mad bro?

They are probably leaving the 9 branding for next years upgraded old design 8 (7s) or (6ssss).

As far as Touch ID goes I expect all Apple fans to consider it out dated garbage once the facial recognition only model is introduced. The legacy large bezel phones might keep it for a couple more cycles, but it's heading to the scrap heap. Apple loves removing features.

I have both the finger print sensor and iris scanner set up on my S8. The iris scanner works well, but when just pulling it from your pocket while walking putting it up to your face to unlock is a pain. Times like this even the rear scanner is much more convenient then having to stick the phone in your face. Even if Apple had to put it on the back they should have given users two options, but my guess is Touch ID will die when the legacy phones do.

Apple won't definitely be calling the new iPhones as 7S and 8 at the same time. That is stupid by any marketing standard. I thought it would be 7S and Edition (celebrating 10th anniversary of iPhone by going retro with the new wallpaper sounds quite legit).

Calling the 7S as 8 is out of the current nomenclature but possible. The "7S" will have glass back, thus it won't be a "7S" material wise. So i guess Apple has a leeway to call it an 8.

iPhone X? I'm not feeling it. Apple even changed OS X to macOS, so now having a product with an X on it doesn't feel right. Simply calling it 10th Anniversary edition is even more likely imo. X just sounds too corny nowadays.
