Windows Presentation Foundation

Yup, once Vista is on a majority of PCs (probably within in the next two years), you'll see much more interesting WPF-savvy apps for Windows start to appear. Vista's foundation is fairly good -- it's just the UI which is rather uninspiring, rather erratic, and uninventive (IMHO).

Of course, Apple has CoreAnimation (even cooler than WPF in a lot of ways), with a very loyal and enthusiastic fan base likely to spur rapid Leopard adoption, so it'll be an interesting battle royale.

But really, I think Apple has something like a 18 or so month time window to really press the advantages of a Mac w/ Leopard before Vista + WPF applications become increasingly ubiquitous.

I am really surprised that Apple themselves haven't produced an app that utilises CoreAnimation to show exactly what it can do.

I mean, you have stuff like the New York Times reader on Vista that shows the potential of WPF and its pretty awesome. I hope the likes of Delicious Monster and co find cool ways of using CoreAnimation

Volume Bezel?!!?!?!

Could someone for the love of all that is holy please post a grab of the new volume bezel that is displayed when changing volume?!

...and some ical goodness, maybe some more stacks features, quicklook stuff wouldn't go amiss... nor would screen sharing - you know, the really big stuff about leapord like back to my mac etc - the things that will really revolutionise that way we work with our macs and access or files / folders / information?!

not menu bars... or docks... or desktop pictures... or parental controls... or scroll bars...

Whos getting promoted?

We are all eager and ready for this OS upgrade step.
Some may have even put money down.

Why is only one company listed as taking preorders?
Is that a paid ad?
Why isnt Small-Dog listed?
A better list or no reference at all.

Agreed, we need some real stuff here, not just the bones.

As'salaamualaikum/Ehlen wa'sah len

(For everyone else: that's "hello" in Arabic)

Wa alaykum al salam :)

but if Apple ever decides to put Arabic in the intro it would probably be "Murhaba" which perfectly translates to Welcome

IE on Leopard. Why oh why oh why. Really hope Apple fixes the icon shadows in the Dock. They are just wrong atm.

Amen!!!

I have to agree with what one of the previous posters on this thread has said... What is the obsession with taking screen shots of System preferences, Parental Controls, Empty desktops etc etc?! When there are so many things we have have seen little of - i.e. - adding new events to iCal, iCal drop box, iCal itself! Quicklook, What options are there for stacks? Finder window - searches, burn folders, saved searches, coverflow with Quicklook etc etc, Screensharing, Back to my Mac, How does an email sent via the new Mail.app using stationery look in gmail? hotmail? iChat quicklook... Spaces in action with itunes, quicktime, photoshop etc etc etc etc...

I can imagine there's a lot covered by NDA's, but if someone is going to go to the trouble of taking screenshots and then posting them - post something we haven't seen! And don't use an image upload service that is crippled (looking at you imageshack!)

Does anyone have an image of the new sound bezel?!?! :p

AMEN!!! All these stupid screen shots are like the LAST things I wanna see in Leopard, and that's all we ever see. GET SOME GOOD SCREEN SHOTS PEOPLE!

i thought i was the only one that thought it was weird that Arabic wasn't included
i think "Marhaba" looks better than "Murhaba", at least thats how i pronounce it where i come from :D

Volume Bezel/App Indicators

I'm not fond of the new volume bezel or running application indicators. They make me fear that the scroll bars will continue to be aqua. *EW*

Having the correct date appear at-a-glance seems so natural-- the same way you don't have to double-click the clock to find the time. It is a normal piece of info that you use, well, every day...
What I hate about Tiger and other OS X OS's has been clicking on the time to see the date and it being GREY and hard to see. Why GREY? It's goofy.

Speaking of bezels...

Has the wireless keyboard bezel been updated to reflect the new wireless keyboard in this build?

I thought Time Machine was one of the apps that demo'd Core Animations strengths. I'm sure many other animations in Leopard will take advantage of Core Animation. I wouldn't be surprised if the stacks on the dock do.

Thanks for the Volume bezel grab Wayfarer!! :)

I'm guessing its a Front Row specific bezel?... If thats the case I can imagine it has a different style to give it contrast against the already black / dark Front Row look and feel - after all, I guess the idea is for FR to be used at a distance with a remote control, so the different look of the bezel brings it out more, as opposed to a simple transparent box...? just a thought...

Regarding Apple creating an Application that shows off Core Animation... Remember the Application that Apple built to demo Core Anim at the last WWDC? - image that app built into itunes, an extension of Cover Flow maybe, where all your album art work, music vids, podcasts etc are shown in the 'wall' and typing a search animates those elements forwards etc etc... that would be awesome... Or even (and this might be pushing it) a full screen way to view your computer - an extension to the desktop metaphor?!... See all your files, apps etc - simply start typing - and boom!... :p

A feature I haven't seen mentioned on any Leopard reviews is the cool instant dictionary lookup... I guess it could be just something that I never noticed in Tiger, but in my Leopard (599) I just have to mouse over any word of text, and press Command+Ctrl+D to make the definition of the word neatly display beneath the word itself. If I hold the Command+Ctrl after tapping D, I can slide my mouse over text and get the definition of every word my cursor touches instantly. There is also a drop-down menu to change the dictionary mode from Dictionary to Thesaurus and to Apple, which gives the ":apple: Definition" of a word (The :apple: definition for the word Tiger for example talks about OS 10.4)... And then there's a "More" button that opens the dictionary.app and let's you say, look it up in Wikipedia. Here, let me demonstrate...

Sorry this isn't pertaining specifically to a new feature of the new build, I just discovered it and thought it was a really cool un-documented feature. I can't wait for the final release! Spotlight is SOOO fast, like, it finds 10,000 pictures across 2 internal hard drive's and an external in like practically 3 seconds! and Quicklook is the most amazing and useful thing ever... ever...

It also seems like more things have the "hold shift for slow-mo eyecandy" in Leopard due to Core-Animation... lots of widgets can be slow-moe'd (Calendar, Weather), spaces, stacks, pretty much everything... the other day my computer bugged out on me while in Spaces and all my windows were super small, and clicking wouldn't quit spaces, but I could still manipulate my windows and type in tiny little boxes and stuff, it was sweet =P
Ok, sorry for rambling, it's just that using Leopard has made me so excited to be able to dump Tiger and buy and exclusively use a bug-free Leopard in October (or at least relatively bug-free... more so than it is now at least!) :) :)

I can't get this to work in Mac OS X 10.4.10 :(

Update: It appears it only works in Safari

I thought about Time Machine but Core Animation is capable of much more than that.

It does work.. I've been using the feature for a very long time - though I find that the first time I use it on any given day it can sometimes take a few seconds for the pop-up to appear - so give it a few more second.

I dont know if the original poster said this - but once you have your cursor over a word and hold down the keys - keep the keys held down until the pop up appears! :)
