right? they only introduced it in 2017 and now they may be getting rid of it.

A triangle is better from a computational photography perspective, as each pair of lenses is as close together as possible, reducing problems due to perspective.

So, for example, when using pixel information from one to increase light sensitivity for another, you get better results.

Interesting if they update the mute switch this way...

It's been the same style and orientation for the duration of iPhone.

it's a phone for crying out loud. it will never match a dslr, so maybe focusing on the battery and some other features that are lacking, might be a good idea.

The iPhone XI² looks as ugly as hell in all of the renderings so far for me personally. Going for a three camera design in row vertically or horizontally would’ve looked better, unless there is some amazing reason for it to be this particular shape. Also it’s a larger area for potential to scratch and damage.

With what appears as minimal improvements hardware wise and don’t talk to me about the new CPU because the one I’ve got is already hugely powerful and I’m not using nearly any of it to its full potential and probably never will, this model seems the one to skip and and wait till 2020 with the possibility of iPhones using 5G Qualcomm modems by then and iI want to see just how good 5G coverage in the UK is by 2020.

What I find odd is with the smartphone market being somewhat stagnant you would think Apple would try a bit harder to make their phones more aesthetically appealing rather than dumping a big square in the corner of the phone and then relying on the same chassis as the current generation pretty much, and concentrate on maybe giving the phones larger batteries instead.

I remember when we were young, innocent, and complaining about the iPhone 6's camera bump… :(

He makes entirely too much sense to work for Apple these days.
Give me a break. Apple is doing very well and design isn’t their problem. Go over to the Samsung thread.

I don’t think you would have predicted phone camera pics would be as good as they are. Many pics are comparable to DSLR.

I've seen several posters coming up with similar theories to justify that camera square. None of those theories seemed to have any verifiable science behind them. Not any that I can find anyway. Where are you guys getting these theories? To be fair, you may be 100% right. It just doesn't seem to be valid because multiple OEM's are doing computational photography without that lens configuration. Heck Apple is doing computational photography without that lens configuration.

Still ugly as hell.

Just put those cameras in the vertical or horizontal line. Both options would look much better.

Geez Jony what are you smoking there? You used to be good, bro! Remember 5S/SE design?

honestly i never thought about how good they would get. point and shoot cameras have also gotten much better, but they are still not as good, although comparable, sure. besides, most people use smartphones to shoot selfies with filters and snap pics of their cats.
also just a note: the portrait mode was a huge disappointment when i got my hands on it - you can get lucky with it, or it can cut parts of your head off just because that's how the camera reads the light.

I have an insight: it’s not going to be named XI. They’ll be named 11, 11 Max, 11R.

Not sure about 11R. One one hand it would make sense to keep it so consumers aren‘t confused but on the other hand the R in XR has no meaning and is just a letter before S to tell customers that XS is better than XR. We‘ll know more in September.

One piece of glass without reinforcement is not going to happen. You couldn't use it properly without a protective case.

After using the wide angle on the S10 I’m looking forward to seeing it on the new iPhone I must say.
