On the plus side, no more spot welds to break to get the bezel ring loose. On the minus, expensive to make piece of glass. Will third parties be able to make this? And it is really ugly.

Why can't they make it thicker and like an iPhone 4 when it comes to taking it apart?

I've seen several posters coming up with similar theories to justify that camera square. None of those theories seemed to have any verifiable science behind them. Not any that I can find anyway. Where are you guys getting these theories? To be fair, you may be 100% right. It just doesn't seem to be valid because multiple OEM's are doing computational photography without that lens configuration. Heck Apple is doing computational photography without that lens configuration.
Its simple physics. If I want to overlay signals from multiple sensors, the sensors should be receiving the same image.

The farther apart the lenses, the less similar the sensor images are.

Other vendors may not be using all three lenses - you can put them in a line if you want, and then only combine signals from nearest neighbors. If you want to combine signals from all three sensors, you want every pair to be close together.

But it makes me wonder how Apple evaluates their case designs after they come out of Jony's head. I'm sure they would worry about leakage if they showed it to a large number of outsiders but the complaints about case design seem to get the most posts. They must be aware.

Apple will become aware only if the sales nosedive; for example, if people refused to buy X when it came out due to its high price and/or notch, sticking with iPhones 7-8 instead. However, people still fell for the wow/cool factor, so if you really feel strongly about it, vote with your wallet.

There is a good Guardian article on what’s possible in a 2019 phone tech-design wise. These guys are quite unbiased, with a sober take on modern iPhones:

it's all subjective i suppose, but all of my co-workers with samsungs describe their battery life as almost double of what my xs is. maybe they are lying...
I doubt they are lying, they probably don’t use their phones as much or maybe in less demanding ways. I don’t know which models you or they have, but for instance the S10 battery isn’t twice the capacity of the XS, it’s more like 25% larger. Real world tests might be more or less than 25%, since battery capacity alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

There are plenty of those tech tubers who have done side by side testing, but I don’t watch YouTube tech videos so if you’re interested in more info you could maybe check those out.

RE: "With the exception of the camera design, no other design or display changes are expected."

I think the XR will be bumped-up from "pseudo" 3 GB to "pseudo" 4 GB.

For comparison purposes, the 7+ is a "true" 3 GB device !

Plus, AAPL better fix the Perf Controller bug(s) in the A12, OR ... major Recall at some point !!!

They still need to deal with the existing A12 units that have the bug(s).

Everyone goes on and on about no reason to upgrade every year, but this takes the cake. If they keep this same exact design, notch, triple camera, it's an S model on an S model. That's bold.

Not attractive. But whatever. I'll still get one. Looking forward to a better camera.

I really hope Apple starts messing around with the technology that I think it was Hanwei announced. Where the camera could be improved long ways along the phone and then just angled the lens at the end. No protrusion. I'm describing that terribly and I apologize. But the tech sounded cool.
Why do you still get one? You are on XS what could possibly new phone give you?

Anyway, the camera setup either be super amazing or I have no clue why Apple is going downhill like this.

I remember an article with the headline "XR stands for nothing", but I've googled and he indeed said it comes from the car world. Still doesn't make a lot of sense to me to have an 11, 11 Max and 11R. Unknowing customers might think the added R must mean that it's better than the one without the R. But like I said before, we'll know in September.
Well just as R coming first before S didn’t mean R was better, 11R vs 11 wouldn’t really imply the 11R was better. In the past they had the 5 and 5c, and the 5c was less expensive. In any case, no one goes by model names to try to guess which is better, do they? The pricing tells the story.

With the rounded corners, the iPhone looks a bit thicker when you put a case on it! Apple should reduce the bezels and flat the corners

I hope they don't continue with the Roman Numerals. I don't care for it nor do I use Roman Numerals everyday for me to remember what all those letters represent. I'm probably in the minority that finds that type of numbering just annoying. iPhone MVIXCIX, whatever that means.

No magic. They likely made the phone's structural components thinner, which would make the phone more fragile. The X is only 17g heavier than the S10. I kind of like some heft to my phones.

I had an Xs Max at launch for a week, and it was way too heavy. The Max is over 30g heavier than the S10+. The S10 definitely didn't feel cheap either. But alas, it still runs Android and Samsung's version of it. So it looks like my 7 Plus will last another year!

Basically it's going to be uglier and more expensive! What's up with Timmy's obsession with "The Hump"?

you nailed it - xs vs. s10. it's hard to do a fair comparison, but although my xs has a much better battery life than the 7 which i was using before, it seems like it could use an improvement when compared to various samsungs etc...
for the record: i'm not complaining about the batter life, i just wish they would stop obsessing over the camera so much and focus on some other things.

I'll buy one. It will be a beautiful, powerful phone with a great camera.
