I find it hard to believe that any iPad will get MiniLED this round. My miniLED TV is almost twice as thick as my regular LED TV, and weighs twice as much too. I can't see Apple stuffing a miniLED panel, and a more powerful processor, in the same 2018 chassis. I still believe a miniLED 12.9 iPP in 2021 would be as thick as a mbp, run as hot as an intel mbp, and weigh more than the mbp. I think this next iPP release will just add a newer processor, 5G, and U1. Thunderbolt sounds like a cool addition, so maybe they'll add that too. I just don't understand where this miniLED rumor even came from. A bright OLED panel would make more sense than miniLED.

Rumors suggest Apple will release refreshed versions of the iPad mini and iPad Pro models in the first half of this year, potentially as soon as this month, and a new leak today has provided us with a possible preview of what to expect in terms of the devices' overall design and camera prospects.

Tech leaker and Apple blogger Sonny Dickson this morning shared images on Twitter showing dummy versions of the upcoming 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, and a refreshed iPad mini 6. Dummies are usually based on CAD schematics sourced from the Chinese supply chain, and are often used to aid-case makers before the official reveal.

Perhaps the biggest talking point in the photos is the look of the iPad mini, which appears to feature the same general design of the previous model, complete with Home button and thick bezels on the top and bottom, although Dickson suggests the device looks "slightly thicker."

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple will launch a new iPad mini that could measure in at 8.5 to 9 inches, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has similarly said that the next iPad mini will have a larger display. However, whether the increased screen will mean a larger iPad mini or a bezel reduction has remained unclear, and it's difficult to tell the exact size of the dummy in the images.

Japanese site Mac Otakara has claimed the iPad mini 6 will feature an 8.4-inch display with slimmer bezels and a design similar to the iPad Air 3. But it also claims the new model will continue to feature a Touch ID Home button and a Lightning port, and is therefore not expected to mirror the major design changes seen on the iPad Air and iPad Pro.

That said, Kuo believes Apple is working on a new iPad mini with a mini-LED display, which could be the same iPad mini that is getting a size increase. Again though, it's not clear if that's the same iPad mini that's depicted in these images.

Onto the iPad Pro dummies, the new models appear to have the same dual-lens camera system with LiDAR Scanner. However, the camera bump on the 12.9-inch model appears to protrude less than on the 11-inch model. Rumors suggest the protrusion of the individual lenses in the camera module will be reduced, but the camera itself is still expected to protrude.

Meanwhile, the reduced-bezel designs appear to mirror the current models, bar the Smart Connector that's mysteriously missing on the bottom of the 12.9-inch model. Dickson has confirmed to MacRumors that the connector doesn't appear anywhere else on the dummy, and it's hard to know if its omission is intentional or a mistake. Other than that, it's difficult to tell the exact screen sizes and dimensions of the iPad Pro models from the photos, but there are no major design changes expected.

Gurman has said that new iPad Pro models will have an updated A14X processor that is "on par" with the M1 chip in the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini, along with better cameras. A mini-LED display will be included with "at least" the larger 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, with the display upgrade bringing improved brightness and contrast ratios. This is in line with other rumors that we've heard, and most of the information suggests the upgraded display technology will be limited to the 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌.

Apple has also reportedly tested iPad Pros with a Thunderbolt connector that would make them compatible with additional external monitors, hard drives, and peripherals, plus it brings faster data syncing speeds, but it is unclear if the feature will be included on the final 2021 models. Apple's Mac machines have featured Thunderbolt technology for years now, but current iPad Pro and iPad Air models have standard USB-C ports.

We're still waiting to hear concrete details about a possible April event from Apple, but Gurman has claimed that the company plans to announce new iPads as early as this month, including new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models. Whether they arrive via press release or are announced at a digital-only event remains to be seen.

Damn ming chi kuo and his 8,5 inch mini report.

Maybe they will announce them alongside the official version of iOS/iPadOS 14.5? It’s in beta 7 now, don’t know how many more to go...

Is the A14X being "on par" with the M1 a bit of a let down...considering the 2018 iPad Pro was ahead of its time and all that and the M1 has been available for some time? I'm interested in some opinions. I'm planning on buying my first iPad Pro with this coming batch.

TBF that’s what people here were saying about the iPhone SE.
Which Apple then made.
And which, in Apple terms, flopped.

I suspect Apple have got detailed market research backing up which variants are actually in demand and plan accordingly.

Personally I’d have thought a small display would count against a Pro device, far too limiting for pro use surely?

The iPhone SE we got was not the iPhone SE we wanted. I mean it stayed true to the original SE in the sense that it was again new hardware in an old chassis but what people really wanted was a smaller device, ideally with thinner bezels and a more industrial design, not a discounted iPhone 8 with more performance (performance SE owners hardly care for for the most part).

What people wanted was a more affordable iPhone 12 mini with downgraded hardware/features. Maybe there will be another iPhone SE that is just that in a few years.

I know the idea behind the original iPhone SE was to be able to recycle old manufacturing lines by keeping an old chassis and putting new hardware into it and keeping the price down that way, but that’s not what consumers wanted from a new SE.

If these crappy mid range android phones can go full screen edge to edge with less bezels, don't see why the biggest tech company can't do the same for the the non pro iPads, iPhone SE and iPod touch.
You just explained why: those android phones are crappy. They cut corners everywhere to give the outside appearance of being modern tech with an edge to edge screen.

Apple could definitely make a well made iPad mini pro. They would charge a pro price for it, too. Personally I’m fine with the mini being less expensive and less cutting edge — this isn’t the model you buy to replace a laptop, it’s the one you buy when you mostly use a laptop but want something small and convenient for content consumption and maybe some light work.

Oh hey they probably haven't thought of that. You should write them a letter.

Disappointing if true. I have been tempted to slowly replace my 2018 11” Pro with a Pencil equipped mini (no ugly bezels please) and eventually a 12.9” Pro for digital art.

They could easily get me to buy two devices instead of one like that since I could use the mini for travel - out and about stuff but still have a great, large drawing device for home use.

Guess I’ll keep my still great 11” Pro another year or so.

Though why ?

Do you really need that much power ? Just asking.
Its less about the power and more about the form factor. It can have the same power as the Air, but the full screen, touch ID in the power button, and use of the Pencil 2 over that god awful Pencil 1 is really all I'm looking for. I love the mini. When I broke my Mini last summer, I replaced it with the 11in Pro since this was prior to the last Air refresh or I would have gone with that one. I love using it with the Magic Keyboard with the iPad as an ALMOST laptop replacement and of course a larger screen for watching stuff when it's propped up, but my experience thus far is that I can't use them for the same stuff. I don't find it comfortable to just carry one-handed, for reading books or comics, and it's not as easy to game on. I know there are people out there where screen size is king but that's just not my use-case. I think if I was a frequent traveler, I'd use the iPad Pro as my personal computer while traveling but around the house I find the mini a more useful piece of equipment.

For those who want pro mini. What is the usages you see for the mini that also use full performance of A14X?

Note pad? well any iPad will do
Video /photo editing? You probably very soon wants a larger screen.
Reading books: any iPad will do
Games: possible use case for portable gaming but it is an expensive solution.
I take it that you've never owned a Mini before..

I don't think people necessarily want a Mini Pro for the Pro chip. We want the edge-to-edge screen which would help it be a better note pad, better book reader, and better gaming system. No one purchases a Mini for video/photo editing purposes. We purchase Mini's because it's the best compromise between a Phone and larger iPad for consumption.
