I have my doubts. If the battery is in the back, then it is going to be 70C in the front under your wrists unlike the current gen where the electronics are in the back.....so it gets hot in the back instead

the ability to swap hds is a nice addition though.

listen to him when he talked about the MBA - something along the lines of "you wont need dvd drive, because you get all ur hd content from iTunes", and he continues with something along the lines of "if you really need a optical drive, here's the $99 attachment".

I really don't see blu-ray coming to Apple either. I'll just buy my own blu-ray discs and watch them on my PS3.

There are blu-ray external attachments like that one external optical drive they offer with the MacBook Air.. but it would only really work with an iMac or a MBP.

many people have been wondering that also...

im guessing September / August?

but im worried that its going to be an all ipod event.

ever since the ipod has been announced in 2001, its been updated every year, in Q3.

whenever it is, this next Apple event will be our last hope of a new MBP in 2008. cuz then it will go into January 2009 at MacWorld (the MBP was introduced at the 2006 MacWorld expo)

As soon as you get 1080p video with uncompressed (I'll settle for lossless) 7.1 audio over the internet let me know.... Until then I am gonna continue wanting BDROM for my Mac.

I'm sure it's going to happen sooner than you think. Hell, Verizon's Fios network has 20mb & 50mb connections. It won't be long till you're downloading 1080p in all it's glory. But, by then you'll be wanting 2160p super high def.

Do you really need 1080p with 7.1 on a laptop?

Because physical media is a dying breed. Apple is definitely moving away from it...i.e. the Air. BlueRay will be the last of the physical media formats. It's not really necessary anymore. Who needs a disk when you have flash drives and wireless networks? The only time I touch a disc anymore is to rip it to my AppleTV. Downloads are the future.

Further evidence of this is the slew of AppleTV like set-top boxes coming out- like Netflix's new piece. Even they know that the discs are dying. Stream it to your tv!

agreed.

digital distribution has a few more hurdles:
  • piracy
  • bandwidth limitations

Well, they do have that iPod rebate promotion aiding computer sales right now. They're also going to be selling millions of iPhones. I don't know how those would play into their decision.. I imagine they'll release them when they're done and not sweat over it too much. If that 5 week thing is what I think it is, then the timing will be perfect.

Apple released the Santa Rosa MacBook Pro revision during the last back to school offer..

lol - truth.

Fios is extremely limited to certain areas. keep in mind not everyone in the US has broadband. half of this country is still on dial-up.... HALF

Why can't BluRay be an OPTION? Sony and HP already have them as options on some of their laptops.
None of the drives currently on the market fit inside the 15" MBP. Assuming the new Apple models are the same thickness or thinner, it just won't fit.

Making the bottom case thicker to squeeze one in certainly could be done, at the risk of the "going backwards! LOL Apple" PR, if it weren't for the following: low demand, high cost, low performance, and battery drain. Even if the drive could fit, it would be a lackluster option at best given the current state of the technology.

It's not like it's an unserved market. You can today, right now, buy a cheaper, faster external unit than any internal Apple BD option would cost.

Despite the number of people wailing, PCs with Blu-ray aren't exactly flying off the shelves. Blu-ray players in general aren't that common.
Until then I am gonna continue wanting BDROM for my Mac.
Why want? Just buy one.

That could be a well sign!
APPLE JUST RELEASE THEM ALREADY!

I was just on the Apple site. Am I going nutty or does the "Previous" text under the photo a hint to something new in the next few weeks?

Well , now that it's been 'leaked' ...won't be long now eh ;)

I just noticed that all of the Apple Store refurb 15" MacBook Pro' s are gone. A day before there were 12 of them.
They always do that ...at least on the UK store , trust me I've been watching for weeks and weeks ...they have a load of stock on , then it all 'appears to sell' then low & behold a little while later all back on again , sceptical , yes but have a watch and see :)

the UK refurb store time for changes is midnight or just after usually

Considering you can't currently buy a 17" MBP with a 2.4GHz processor and 256MB VRAM it's currently 100% correct: it is a previous generation in that it's not the current iteration.

if its made of Aluminum, i won't buy one. i have heard that they dent very easily? also i prefer the white plastic of my MB.

Mine has yet to be dented. If you drop your plastic MB, it's just as likely to receive a large crack as the aluminum would dent. It's just the nature of the material.

That is the previous generation MBP, the current one only comes as 2.5 Ghz, that one is 2.4 (in 17" that is)

Edit: beaten to it 3 times... lol

?

I went on the Refurb site just now, and it changed back to
Apple Certified Refurbished 17-inch MacBook Pro
not previous generation like above.

is it just me or it just occurs to me that all the Macbook Pro 15" are all either removed or sold-out on the refurbished store. Are they saving stock for RMA purposes and not making current 15" or are they really sold out for refurb 15" MBP?

New MBP 15" coming very soon? also the Refurb MB Air looks good for $1499 too... Hard to wait....

I don't know why you would want uncompressed 1080p or 7.1. Blu-Ray isn't uncompressed either. If you've ever seen a quality encode of a 1080p movie in an MKV container, you'd know it's pretty good. And you can get file sizes around 8GB or so. With a 10mbit connection, you can download one of these in an hour. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that streaming could be possible, although it's not there yet. And 7.1 is a bunch of hype. 5.1 is fine. How many speakers do you really need??

thats putting it pretty nicely.

u need a pretty decent pipe to stream hd content. and i believe the facts say that only 50% of the United States is on broadband

http://news.cnet.com/Broadband-adop...ark-in-U.S./2110-1034_3-6160422.html?tag=nw.1

in all honesty, for some users - going out and buying the disc from walmart and bringing it home is a lot faster than downloading the entire movie.

not to mention the obvious benefits of an actual disc in ur hands vs. digital copies

Move to the Great Britain dude... Only 0.4% of people in Britain cannot get broadband. The same percentage also don't get running water... Obviously we are a much smaller country though!

BORING. Tampered edges, my god, I think I'll slash my wrists today, because life can't get any better than this!!!!!!!!
:p

2K and 24.2 FTW lol

The MBP speakers aren't that bad as laptop speakers go, but I hope Apple takes this opportunity to put in better ones. Whatever happened to their partnership with Harmon Kardon for speakers in the iMac? A pair of Harmon Kardon speakers in the MBP would be a nice complement to a Blu-ray functionality especially against some laptops I've seen that have Altec Lansing speakers.
