I would think that the 3g Nano or Shuffle would be a better fit.

Well, yes.

Let me clarify.

Agree that the iPod Touch is too big for the gym.

Personally, I have a 32GB Touch. I like it. But it is no Newton. The current Touch would need to be bigger and have more features to replace a Newton for functionality.

However, to shrink the current Touch to a Nano size, would reduced it's effectiveness as the screen would be too small IMHO. So I don't ever expect to see a iPod Touch Nano added to the iPod line.

I don't see why the full size touch can't have all the features you want, while a simpler touch would be a nano edition, just movies, music - on the go in a smaller package - maybe no bigger than 25% larger than a nano 3g and no heavier than another 35% - with 32gb, I'd buy one for sure, even at 250$ US
EDIT: BUT IT MUST have some kind of pause button at least - so you can pause without looking @ the screen.

Hm, I would have thought that the cord to sync the iPod would be like the one that came with my touch. The smaller one. Why would they use this when they have the smaller one available?

What's this small one look like and is it a standard plug? does it work with all their peripherals and docks?

I've never heard of it until today.

ts, maybe :/

The screen is flat but looks curved because the iPod itself is rounded.

Smaller touch iPod

I agree with the posters who have proposed a smaller touch iPod, although I think that those who highlight the problem of size also have a point. The interface would have to change to accommodate the reduced size. I put together some mockups of how this might look on my blog a couple of months back:

Introducing a 9-icon variant of the iPhone OS would add a significant ongoing overhead to the development of the platform. Nonetheless, given the importance of offering smaller form-factor devices, it may well make sense for Apple to branch development in this way. It would mean that standard iPhone apps would not work on this platform - they would require adaptation.

Am I the only one that thinks that it could be just a chinese fake? i mean it wouldnt be the first time that the chinese fake an ipod or what they think could be the new ipod and i bet it wouldnt be a big deal for them to produce such a device.
I'm still thinking that this thing is fake and apple is going to suprise us with something new and exciting.

That mockup looks 10000000000x better than the new ipod nano. I hate the new design, it feels like they have gone backwards with their design, not forwards, except they made it curvy!!!!! :(

Maybe im in the minority who like the current Nanos, but i think that mockup above looks like a step forward with its interface in keeping with other products.

Works with all of my iPods. Even the older ones.
BTW, I got this picture from the Apple iPod touch site.

The games on the nano would probably be a lot more fun then on the touch because you will have the clickwheel + motion sensor. And if the nano has modeshift like the rokr e8 when your in game mode the click wheel would change into a gamepad. :crosses fingers: :D

I have to agree with the 9 icon SpringBoard for the nano. It'd mean the screen DPI would be the same, just a smaller screen with a smaller res (That looks the same res as the larger screened versions).
Could even work for the shuffle!

The new nano design is growing on me, I might have to pick one up. Unless, they make the classic cheaper.

THAT would remind me of the Apple ive come to know and love, products that people can actually get excited waiting for. I remember just last year being giddy while waiting for xmas season when my dad would pay half for my touch.

This year i havent really seen anything that gets me that excited (new macbooks would require new pants on this end:D). That may be because im not a fan of phones however

stupid curve...

don't get e wrong, im 95% sure im buyin one of these, im just upset about the curve. i mean, we used to have curved tv's and moved on to tht e flat screen, why does the ipod have to be curved!? Oh well, it's still amazing!

it probably comes down to ergonomics now. Apple may be moving towards the best experience possible with there devices in terms of useage, looks, and now feel.

My gut says that the "classic" line will be replaced with the "touch" line with flash and HDD versions.

and unfortunately the nano will be the "leaked" nano that we have been seeing, but with a new looking OS.

i really dont see the touch with HDD, unless they really put some work into the thing, the UI would be noticebly choppier than one of the flash based ipods.

the problem is that they still need a "large capacity" ipod and I think they REALLY want to make as many of them touch as possible. So, they might be willing to give it a shot.

eh, like someone else already said. Every ipod line has its purpose. I dont see the touch based ipods being the large capacity line until large capacity chips are available at competive pricing to HDD. Apple always forsees when a medium is coming to an end, and im sure they see the end of HDDs on the horizon (say 5-10 years until Flash is a serious threat to the HD market.)

that's a fair point.

I'm juts trying to think of something that might shake things up a bit.

Second..who the hell said anything about an accelerometer for the screen to go sideways. It would only need to go sideways when you're watching a movie and the software could do that :S They're already using relatively expensive equipment in it...why pay more for something so unnecessary? That's assuming of course we get the tall model again.

It's also funny everyone sees Apple as a design company first, and then a technology company. It's not fashion people, they're allowed to use "old" designs because people make mistakes, and research reveals the truth. Tall slim just works for the nano line.

It's like....if they stay with the fatty, they're not being creative enough. If they make it tall and slim they're reusing ideas (ie - not being creative enough.) I like the nonagon idea because it really illustrates the craziness Apple users have come to show.

Why couldn't computers just remain in the hands of nerds :(
