I've been repeatedly saying this, but the clickwheel design just makes no sense on these pictures. Apple would not release a product that's half-assed on design, so that's giveaway number one. The 2nd photo (the green one) makes little sense to me because I think Apple is shifting their new iPods (correct me if im wrong) with the smaller/shorter USB connector (the end that docks into the iPod), which has been shipping with the iPhone. The newer USB connector is smaller and serves the same purpose as the old one, probably making it cheaper because you don't have the buttons on the side to press (not much, but considering they're selling millions, it does save money) and sticks to their minimalist philosophy. And third, although no longer as common anymore, Apple would've taken this picture down by now wouldn't you think? If they're making a big event for the iPod, these leaks are too easily slipped.

Here's what I've been talking about the clickwheel design, if they're shifting to the longer nano design. It's similar to the Moto Rokr E8, in which it "lights" up different signs in different modes, eg video viewing, landscape mode vs music player. Of course, because the click wheel isn't that large, in landscape mode, just use and light up the letter "M" for the reverse or forward.

Like that idea! I hope apple does something like that

My ipod 3g has that connector with the buttons to remove it? When was a different one even released?

i think one came with my first gen iPhone. and since the picture when a newer ipod is connected to a computer (3rd gen nano, iPod classic) thats when i noticed the change

It looks the best I've ever seen it in this picture. And after looking at my sister's 2nd gen. iPod nano, I realize how small this one will actually be in person. (if released) I certainly looks giant in these pictures. I still can't understand the curve though.

You're right about it being less common now, which is why we can't assume that they will ask to have the pictures removed. Pictures and other details about the iPhone 3G were leaked months in advance (then again, and again). It's very possible that Apple will leave the leaks alone, especially for a minor iPod nano update.

I just watched the 3g nano keynote, and Steve clearly stated how Apple was trying to get away from the plastic caps that were on the 2g nano. No matter how much that I play this out in my head, it just doesn't make sense. I won't believe it until i see it. Also, if these photos were real wouldn't Apple ask these websites to take them down like they did last year?

Ya know...I wonder if they would change the design of the nano after just one year?

Also, the nano is ment to be a COMPACT MUSIC PLAYER.

Why would they change the design just for videos?

I've seen this

I just got back from China. I was there working on the Olympics. I saw this exact "iPod". The packaging was slightly different and there were a lot of knock offs so I paid no attention to it. The last time I saw it though was at the Yao Show market around the 26th of August at was suppose to be an "authorized" dealer.
Can't help but wonder now if some slipped out of the factory early.

No watermarks.

The bottom edge of the iPod looks odd, like the colour hasn't quite been PS'd properly.
The light reflection also looks PS'd. Far too in-focus, where the whole of the picture is out of focus.

I don't have an issue with this form factor, preferred the old 2G in my hand anyhow.

But this image just doesn't look right.

Whoaah... another FAKE picture!. My goodness, people are SO gullible!. Looks like a very good render, with a box photo superimposed onto it.

Amazing what Maya can do ;)

the photo is real. very bad camera/lens quality, more than likely a camera phone. take it from a photographer.

i find it weird that people still believe this is fake. we've seen the cases for these iPods before this photo even surfaced.

If this is real, why are the strange pink highlites similar to a photoshop paint brush and utterly out of context in terms of light source? Why are the highlites SHARP and the rest of the photo blurry?

FAKE as FAKE can BE.

This new iPod just feel like a step backward from Apple.
It feels like they can't come up with something new so they have to reuse their old design, with some tiny changes so it doesn't appear to be 100% the same.
The 3rd gen nano feels much more compact and expensive compare to this. I guess it has to do with the smaller proportion of the screen to the rest of the case.

The touch is far far too big for anyone who goes to the gym.
I would think that the 3g Nano or Shuffle would be a better fit.

My 3g nano is perfect at the gym, whereas a touch is ridiculously too big and heavy.
Well, yes.

If they make a nano touch, ever, it has to be a bit bigger than the current 3g fatty but the same kind of shape (so it can do widescreen)

They need to keep the weight and size down for it to be practical.
Let me clarify.

Agree that the iPod Touch is too big for the gym.

Personally, I have a 32GB Touch. I like it. But it is no Newton. The current Touch would need to be bigger and have more features to replace a Newton for functionality.

However, to shrink the current Touch to a Nano size, would reduced it's effectiveness as the screen would be too small IMHO. So I don't ever expect to see a iPod Touch Nano added to the iPod line.

What I would like to see is a scratch proof case and a manual EQ for the new iPods.

more plasticky and curvier

as much as i like this new design, i really don't buy it. it's simply just a small design bump... when has Apple ever 'bumped' a products design for a generation? the 1st Gen nano was absolutely different from the mini, the 2nd Gen took some of the mini's looks back but was still a nano. the 3rd Gen was the size of a matchbook.

look at the evolution from the iPod to the iPod classic. the shuffle. the iPhone. i just don't think we'll see the nano go back to it's 2nd Gen roots with a longer screen. it'll most likely be as plasticky and curvy as the iPhone 3G. the 2nd Gen nano and iPod Classic took after the 1st Gen iPhone after all.

what i would really REALLY like is built in nike+ support. maybe nike can make the receiver smaller? they've been working with Apple for 2 years now and both are reaping the rewards. it's even possible that gym equipment will have it built in soon.

Newton? dude this is 2008 that was 1993.

Companies who had that kind of mindset "if it works don't change it" like Motorola with their cell phone product line got kicked really bad. Last I heard Motorola was dropping their cell division or selling it off. Wonder why?
Oh yeah, they don't have simple and cool features that others do.

Design changes for a reason, one of which is not "because it can be done". Apple change their designs because of some function they wish to achieve. For instance, they made the 3G Nano fat because they wanted a bigger screen, now they want a widescreen and so have resorted back to the tall form which is the best form for a widescreen.

If they create a 'Nano touch' then just buy a damn iPod touch - does the same but with additional features.

If your argument against buying the full iPod touch it because you like to use it when running/at the gym/etc then a touch screen makes even less sense. A touch screen on such a small device will require even more focus than the iPod touch does.

They made the Nano fat for the bigger screen, not to get rid of the plastic caps. The plastic cap comment was probably a justification after the fact.

Are there any examples of Steve/Apple saying one thing then doing it a few years later? I remember him joking that making a flat screen iMac by cutting off the front of the iMac G3 wouldn't work - then they did exactly that a few years later!

Also, if these photos were real wouldn't Apple ask these websites to take them down like they did last year?
If they did that they would confirm it is true.
