I think the below image is self explanatory...

Yeah, by comparing both of those the size looks almost exactly the same as the current Mac Mini. I bet it even has the same white plastic on the top.

I hope this is just a prototype and is not the real thing. I wouldn't buy it if it was the same size and has that same old awful white plastic. Apple needs to make it looking more like the Apple TV, which I think is all aluminum, but with a disk drive.

Now that I think about it, I'd only buy that if I had a little extra money and I suspect the specs to be a little different.
It will most likely have a new body, relate to the way the MacBooks are, and will not be photoshopped...

Mac mini (current gen, well it will be previous gen when the new ones come out. - $499
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
- 120GB HDD (upgradable to XXXGB)
- 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- Superdrive
- Silver Aluminum and white plastic casing
- No Mini-DVI port
- Four USB ports
- Firewire 400

^^^I'm a little skeptical about that happening but it's a possibility since something similar happened with the MacBooks.

Mac mini - $599
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
- 160GB HDD (upgradable to 320GB)
- 2GB DDR3 Memory (upgradable to 4GB)
- 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- Superdrive
- New Aluminum Black casing
- Mini-DVI port
- Five USB ports
- Either firewire 400 or 800.

Mac mini - $799

- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
- 250GB HDD (upgradable to 320GB)
- 2GB DDR3 Memory (upgradable to 4GB)
- 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Due
- Superdrive
- New Aluminum Black casing
- Mini-DVI port
- Five USB ports
- Either firewire 400 or 800

I dream of this happening. Do you guys see something familiar?

Shouldn't this be a Page 2 item? This is faker than Paris Hilton on the red carpet. The giveways: 1) FW400. It's missing from the MB. It probably will go bye-bye in all consumer Macs by the end of the year. FW will be reserved for the pro models from here out. 2) Mini-DVI AND Mini-DisplayPort. C'mon. On a $500 Mac. C'mon. 3) Five USB ports. Five! Yeah right. 4). 2GB RAM standard. Uh huh. Since when does Apple ship a computer with anything more than barebones RAM? And on a budget computer

I don't agree about FW. On the laptops, the price difference is about a grand. With desktops, it's closer to two. Apple can get people to upgrade in some cases, but there's just too vast a price difference between the mini and the Mac Pro.

And what is so outlandish about adding one USB port? Especially on a machine where many users are already using half the available ports for keyboard and mouse. Also, ram is dirt cheap these days, there are PCs under $400 with 3 gigs of ram.

oh Apple, when oh when will you put a REAL quad core processor in a consumer desktop? *sigghhhh*

I hope it is for real!

I got so excited when I saw that picture. Against my better judgment, I would like to believe I am looking at something real. It's the same feeling I get when I go to a tittie bar. ;)

You still didn't answer my question - if it's not for TV, why does apple include front row and a remote?

For you music and video that are on your Mac mini, which is your computer that is hooked up to your monitor.
Although, some people have made them into Apple TV like things by hooking them up to TV's and setting them up in their living room to go along with their home theatre.

You still didn't answer my question - if it's not for TV, why does apple include front row and a remote?

Be... cause there's an IR port on the computer? Because a monitor does the same thing as a TV?

Front Row came out LONG before the Apple TV. It was always designed to be done on a completely computer-based setup.

You still didn't answer my question - if it's not for TV, why does apple include front row and a remote?

All Macs come with Front Row, and IIRC up until recently most Macs came with a remote, and they're currently still available for an additional price. Does that mean that all Macs are for TV?

Wow, I'd love to explain to my wife why we need an 8-core Mac Pro for my DVR system. :D

This may be a real picture but not of real product. Apple does lots of prototypes. Even if we see a photo there is no way to know that it will eventually ship to customers.

Thank God at last...

[testdi]https://www.macrumors.com/2009/02/19/leaked-photo-of-the-next-generation-mac-mini/[/testdi]

A possible image of the next generation Mac Mini was first posted to a MacRumors forum discussion thread. The image depicts what could be the next Mac mini.

The original leaker also claimed the following specs:

- Intel Core 2 Duo
- 2GHz
- 3MB L2 cache
- 2GB RAM DDR III, 1066MHz
- Super Drive is SATA

Finally the rumor I have been waiting for.

As a photo retoucher, I'd like to mention that whenever photos like this get posted, everybody and their mother magically becomes an expert on lighting, photography and digital retouching.

You're not. For God's sake, you're not.

This is a very real photo cropped down and blown up from a larger photo taking under crap lighting conditions. If I am wrong, then whoever created this photo is ****ING AMAZING, because they successfully managed to whittle together photos of different ports taking under different lighting conditions, make it look like they were all taking under the SAME (crap) lighting conditions, and yet keep the blur, noise and even the color artifacts of the digital photo consistent and believeable throughout.

If this is fake, I will gladly buy the creator of the photo the new Mac Mini when it comes out as reward for the greatness. All they need to do is send me their source files and the PSD file of their photo retouching MASTERPIECE as proof.

Why is there no HDMI port?

1. HDMI is proprietary, thus requires licensing (i.e., money) from Apple to use it. DisplayPort is not proprietary, thus it doesn't cost any hardware manufacturer to implement it.

2. HDMI is limited to 1920 x 1200 (unless you get into dual-link HDMI, which isn't on any TVs that I'm aware of). The nVidia 9400m chipset will do 2560 x 1600, thus putting an HDMI port on a Mac would handicap it.

I'm In!

looks sick, but hmmm. . . wonder if i can pick up previous gen for cheaper? I'd love to get one for around $300.

also, is gonna update the wireless to 802.11N?

I think it's fake. Why would they put a mini-DVI port on it. This prevents buyers from using two new 24" Cinema Displays. I highly doubt Apple would want to do that.

(Somebody may have already said this--long thread already)
Firewire(800) on a Mac-mini but not on a MacBook? That doesn't make sense.
Actually, it does if Apple is positioning the Mini as a home-scale server; the FW800 is necessary (ok, highly preferable) for faster/beefier outboard storage, while on a laptop USB2 is "enough."

Me, I really, REALLY hope this happens. I'm currently running a cobbled together G4 tower with a SATA card as a home server, but I've said from day 1 I'd use a Mini if it had faster external storage. Barring that, my only (Apple-produced) option was a "pro" grade laptop with an eSATA card running as a server, which would be powerful and compact (plus built-in battery backup!), but is rather expensive and a complete waste of all the laptop-ness.

A mini with faster external storage options would be exactly right, and all it needs is a fast enough processor to play video without skipping and it's a perfect home server/media center combo. I'd obviously prefer one with an eSATA port or an Expresscard slot so I could add one, but FW800 is good enough to saturate a gigabit link. Being fast enough to be able to play video upscaled to 1080 could justify the cost as a replacement for my PS3 for all video other than Blu-ray. (Because the PS3 is ridiculously noisy when doing DVD upscaling, and won't play MKV subtitled files without a reencode.)

C'mon, Apple, give us a mini-server!

Definatly a fake

Notice how all the symbols (labeling the ports) are in exactly the same place as the old mini, as can be seen in the comparison photos.
Nothing has moved a millimeter except for new ports have been added, which would be so easy to photoshop on a white surface like that.

I feel the display port at least would have moved a bit, but its still on the 3rd grill from the right.

This is an obvious fake!

But bring on the updates please..
