Apologies if this has been pointed out, but is that a double-sided camera hole? As in maybe for front side video conferencing added to regular camera?

Ok, you're going to have to explain what a "single sided hole" would be.

It goes all the way through the plastic, yes. That's what makes it a hole. The current iPhone back is no different.

Maybe its the long rumored ceramic back? Either way it looks like Safari will run snappier with the new casing!

um, yeah, where does the antenna go if it is all metal? doesnt work.

however, i do like the matte-ness

If the back needs to be plastic for the antenna, then how is it that wifi works in my MacBook Pro? It's ALL aluminum. And don't tell me the antenna is behind the display - because it could be behind the iPhone's display if that worked..

You simply can't deny the fact that my WhiteBook's Wi-Fi reception blows your MB Pro out of the water (on an order of magnitude).

What I mean is - and I know I'm going out on a limb - but one of the photos gives me the impression that the camera hole can be on both sides, meaning that you have a camera on the back, just as you do now, and a camera in the front. The front camera would be for video conferencing or whatever images you would need forward-facing.

EDIT: To say it better, you have a traditional iPhone camera on the back, and an iSight camera on the front, like you do on a monitor. Just having fun.

Well, depending on your model...

PowerBook's was here:

MacBook's was here:

And I assume it hasn't moved in the new unibody:

But the question still stands... If this is a metal back on the supposed new phone, how does the signal get out now?

Got it. Anyway, there's no doubt in my mind that the piece in the photos in the OP are plastic. Nothing about them looks metal.

My girlfriend has a plastic MacBook. We have never been anywhere where she could get wifi and I couldn't. My router is through 6 insulated walls and my MacBook got 2 bars and my MacBook Pro gets 2 bars as well.

Here I am denying it.

Very interesting. Do I see an indication of a ring around the camera opening which could possibly be for an LED flash, or am I seeing things?

You're seeing things. this is the recessed area to allow for the glass part to cover the camera's actual lens.

The photos only show the back plate of the phone, nothing there shows anything about what the front plate will look like.

Unibody Design?

I was wondering....

I have a friend who works at Apple, and that iPhone has already been submitted to FCC (thus, the document becomes public record)

One thing he noted about the new iPhone is that the case is based on Apple's MacBook/MacBook Pro unibody design.

They took one hunk of aluminium, and carved it out.

Nice!
It looks like the same soft touch material of this case, minus the case - exactly what I have been wanting.

I have never been a case-for-my-handhelds kind of guy. Seems redundant to put a case around a case... not to mention the abomination of covering such gorgeous industrial design. But the back of the original iPhone was sooo slick - marking the first handheld product for which I purchased a case.
And with my 3G, I fell in LOVE with Incase's soft touch slider. Hands down the best case for an iPhone to date.

Since then, I have hoped Apple would make the next iPhone soft touch. And if these pictures are any indication of what to expect, I'm pretty happy.

Now if we can just get to copy & paste, video recording & disk mode... :p

Unibody

Im not surprised if its gonna have the same unibody engineering. I loved the metal back. Plastic is just cheap looking, even though its nice plastic.

CAN"T WAIT!

My, my! That looks incredible, I'd greatly prefer it versus my glossy back.

I am with you on that one. I hate the glossy plastic back because it scratches way too easily and it just feels kind of cheap to me. I prefer the back of the original iPhone and wish they would go back to it, even if they changed the color to black.

sorry to rain on the parade, but those are fake. In the first picture you can see the bottom of the phone, and there's no holes for a speaker, mic, or even a dock connector, which means that the pics are either of a crazy new design where the mic disappears and the speakers dont exist and you cant sync the phone, or its fake

Does anyone else see milling/machining marks in the middle of the inside shot? Milling the new back out of a single block of alOOOOmineeeeeeUm?
