Guys my blackberry storm has a thin alumininum back which has a black matte finish which would be identical to what this is rumored to be. Reception on the bb is amazing it feels great to the touch and doesn't pick up grease .

It's actually the perfect materials combo out there IMO. A few utc phones have similar casings as well ( but more rubbery )

I really hope this rumor is true and I urge you to examine the back of the bb storm If u can and you will probably fall in love and hope it comes to the iPhone. -- the grease right now is disgusting on it

Prefers Glossy black :p (at least you can wipe off the smudges easily)

Thats what Apple should do with the iPod Touch. I don't see why they keep making it out of the same material they have been using on iPods for many years. It gets scratched up as soon as you start using it and you have to clean it with water to get all of the finger prints off of it.

Maybe the next generation iPod Touch and iPhone will be similar when it comes to materials, just like the new MacBook and MacBook Pro are similar.

Yup, those chrome backs didn't stay new for long.

What I mean is - and I know I'm going out on a limb - but one of the photos gives me the impression that the camera hole can be on both sides, meaning that you have a camera on the back, just as you do now, and a camera in the front. The front camera would be for video conferencing or whatever images you would need forward-facing.

Since these photos don't show the front, I'm wondering if you are somehow looking at different photos.

Exactly. They aren't showing anything but the back casing? I would assume the hole would penetrate through both sides to thus become a hole.

As much as I love the idea of a glowing Apple logo on the iPhone, I just can't see them doing that -- just another "battery drain" for people to complain about, plus it would use up valuable space.

My solution to that:

A single sided mirror for the Apple Logo.

Let the backlight that's already there from the screen illuminate the logo. Not exactly wasting the battery if it's already there. It's not adding anything, just purposely allowing a light-leak of the good variety.

This would truly provide child-like wonder if my iPhone's Apple glowed.

Oh that would be wonderful. I would pay anything to get something like that. I would also make it the best cell phone to show off.

Apple has had it on laptops for years and now some companies like Sony and Vizio are using the idea on their TV's. I don't see why it couldn't be used on cell phones.

Compare

First off, it's still plastic. Second, not much has changed - but some things have. Either REAL or a Chinese copy. See my comparison photo. Note: hard to see, but the silver thing is not just a sticker, the plastic is milled around it.

Thanks, that's great to know! My only worry about a metal back was reception issues.

I hope this is a black version of the metal that makes up the case of my 1st generation iPhone. The 2nd generation phones look and feel tacky in comparison.

So glad I held out and didn't upgrade now as my contract expires at the end of April!

G-dmm it! They are sticking with the crappy plastic?

Explain to me, why Apple went away from the white and black plastics on the Macbook to aluminun to make them more 'solid' ... but then moved FROM an aluminum iPhone to the plastic!!?!?!?

Guess what, the plastic iPhones starting showing cracks! I loved the original iphone with it's sturdy aluminum casing - BRING IT BACK!
