Ah, but did they fully develop the technology, including the manufacturing of components, actually put that into a device and bring it to market? (i.e. realise an idea).

You mean, did they manufacture the machines that manufacture the components they designed? No. Giving someone credit for bringing something to market that hasn't even been announced, let alone reviewed, is seriously jumping the gun. And if it flops? Do they still get credit? I have serious doubts that Samsung has "gotten this right" because of their past performance trying to be first to market.

Ohhhh give me a break :D

Really? Let's see, mp3 players, tablets, smartphones, smartwatches...even ultrabooks and lightweight metal unibody construction. Who was the first to do those things right? And these are all in common use RIGHT NOW.

This tech is cool, and probably the future of smartphones. These first ones probably won’t be super great, but future ones will be. I’m really not sure how anyone can judge this particular phone either way having not seen it demoed or used yet. I don’t think it’s particularly fair to judge it as “useless” just because it doesn’t run iOS. I also don’t think it’s fair to blast Apple for not releasing one yet. I imagine Apple is just doing what it always does and waiting to make sure they can get it right if there proves to be a market for these.

My whole problem with this thing is the brand. I have had three Samsung kitchen appliances and one Samsung TV break before they were even 5 years old. And I mean BREAK. To the point where they weren’t worth the cost of fixing and weren’t under warranty anymore. My son has a Samsung tablet that makes a strange, unexplained hissing noise 24 hrs a day. So yeah, I don’t trust this phone not to eventually break. I think Samsung is a very unreliable brand. So when I say I’ll wait for Apple or another more reliable brand to do one, that’s why.
If your TV broke and it costs too much to fix then sounds like you broke the panel or it went out. Everything else can be repaired fairly cheap.

Same on their appliances if you do it yourself which is really easy unless it's the compressor on a fridge or a tub on a front load washer.

A tip: Don't buy anyone's front load washer. Huuge waste of money with triple the parts to break. Also the only common problem I've seen on their tv's were bad caps, years ago, which are replaced for free out of warranty. That and if you had touch controls on the front of the TV instead of actual buttons Think that part is only like $15 and takes less than 15 minutes to replace. Main boards, power supplies, Tcon board are under $100. That is basically it for any parts that can go bad on a modern lcd. But if you crack a panel then yeah it's not worth fixing on any TV.

Top loading washers drastically reduce the life of the clothes you wash in them compared to the more gentle washing of a front loading washer. So yeah, if the washer is what you care about more than the clothes you're using it for, buy a top loader.

As far as Samsung's brand, there was a point where I bought everything Samsung. None of that is left in my house, it ALL broke either just outside of the warranty period or in the case of my $3500 TV, shipped with a defect that Samsung NEVER fixed and wasn't noticeable until outside of my return window. I seriously couldn't wait for the thing to die...and once the manufacturer's warranty ran out, boom - everything went pink. I don't have the same problems with any other non-Korean manufacturers, LG was potentially worse.

Not salty, but I don't see the use-case for this. I'm open to ideas. Yes, I'm sure phablets are too big for skinny pants but I don't have a phablet, I went with the "regular" XS and I rarely wear skinny pants. I cant wait for baggy pants to come back in style.

There's definitely a use case for it, but it will be a long time before software really catches up to do it. Also, for someone who already hates the bulk of a large phone, I just don't see myself fitting a tablet battery into my pocket.

Comments are salty as hell. I can't even imagine how loved would be Apple for doing this. It's a breakthrough tech and it's just sad some of you can't accept that.
Why would people be salty over this when they are stating their preference? For me, I don't need more screen. What's next, a Samsung foldable tablet that unfolds to 24"? Focus on security and dependability first.

That is what a sheep would do. It’s a free world, we can hold companies to account when the sell phones (Note 5) that are a fire hazard and won’t admit wrongdoing. They could have killed people. The same (insane) execs are in charge now. Never forget their customers were treated like this. If Apple did this I’d blacken their name too. You don’t treat your customers like this and expect no retaliation.

Over the last 2 years, Apple products, software, and support have gone down the *******! After a decade with iphone and having every model from 3G to 7, I literally switched to my first android phone (S9+) mid last year. I gave it a shot thinking I would return it within 2 weeks and get the latest iphone model. That was about 8 months ago and today I would never even think about going back to apple and their overpriced crap that only tries to catch up to their competition.

Yes, the iphone might show video faster than my samsung, but in all seriousness like I'm ok with a split second longer delay times for a video to start playing and have software that is at least a year ahead of apple's crap. Bugs? Samsung seems to do a better job with updates and not allowing people to turn your camera and mic on. Batteries catching fire? Yeah that was years ago and the battery manufacturers fault. When was the last time an android caught fire? Think something like that can't happen to apple? Keep smoking that crack! The best time to smoke crack, is right after smoking crack!

I have been a very loyal apple customer for over the last decade. I have literally spent over $50k with apple during this time betweens Macs, iPods, Ipads, iPhones, Apple Watch, etc. I basically owned everything they sold and within the last 2 years all 10+ of my apple devices have either broke, stopped working corrrectly, and had major software bugs that took apple over 5 hours to fix over multiple sessions. Sorry, I can't wait long enough to replace all my apple products with something better that lasts longer. So far, I'll talk samsung over anything apple. Until my samsung experience is like my apple experience, buh-bye apple!

Got to admit, this is pretty awesome.
More or less awesome than this one?

Hopefully more awesome, reviewers haven’t been particularly kind to the FlexPai.

Shouldn't people be outraged that Samsung is using dark marketing shots that don't show specific details about the hinge or the screen fold? Pretty sure that was treated like a big deal with the X phones and the notch.

Nice first post! And I definitely believe you’ve averaged over $5k/year on your iPods, iPads, iPhones, Apple Watch and other Apple products for the last 10 years.

All the hands on reviews were pretty critical of how it folded.
A noticeable bulge in the center due to the plastic screen and it never went truly flat opened or closed.
The transitions were pretty bad as well.

The marketing is laughable... it didn't disrupt anything. It showed how NOT to make a folding phone.

Let's see if Sammy pulled a rabbit out of its rear on this one or if it's just another clumsy implementation.

Maybe I missed it, but what was the use-case? Was it that you didn't like a tablet battery in your pocket? If so, how would a folding tablet have less battery? Serious question. Wouldn't it be the same battery, just stacked?

The only reason you have a smartphone is because of Apple. The thing is with Apple they are not gimmicky like the competition. All the goofy stuff Samsung has released such as putting up phones next to each other to send music and pics. How did that turn out? What about smart scroll? That's not around either. Then there's Air View, the Beam Projector, Kick Stands, Ticker Panel, etc. Samsung's 2D face ID was completely worthless. Yes, Apple came late with a far better solution, but it was based on needs and the progression of the phone design. What's your take on Google coming late to the party on search?

You forgot Dex. It’s a half baked solution.

Smartphones existed before the iPhone. ;)
The move to all touchscreen phones was already in motion even before Apple released the iPhone.
I believe Apple pushed it to the mainstream faster than it would have, but they are not the "only reason" we have smartphones. That is an extremely myopic view to take.

Agreed... never understood what their end goal was with this.
They put so many restrictions on it that it was useless.

I don’t think Apple will launch one for another four years maybe, either way it’ll cost a ridiculous amount of money, if you think iPhones and iPads are expensive now, wait till they combine them into one device and watch that price triple...

Indeed. Apple still has yet to make even simple 2-in-1 hybrids like the Surface lineup. They pretty much need to be convinced something will matter in the future.

Samsung are about to set the phone world ablaze again ;-).

If I was to trust a foldable phone I’d buy it from the company two years who sold us a non-foldable phone that was a fire hazard and wouldn’t admit wrongdoing until it was way too late.

The envy is apparent. :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I agree. I had a PalmVII and various Treos with conenctivity long before the iPhone; the iphone jst made it a lot more functional but there were smart devices before that.

It's not the bugs. It's the lack of support. Bugs are inevitable, but Samsung has no shame in not providing fixes even for flagship devices.
I think they do provide fixes but they don’t make it a priority so you could be waiting months and months.

How is it “game over” for Apple

Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything. That redefines what it technology is and what human beings can achieve. We’ve seen it. Windows. Metro. Android. Samsung. They push the boundaries and create whole ones. Marko Ahtisaari. Matias Duarte. Bill Gates. Sergey Brin. Larry Page. Andy Rubin. Lee Kun-hee. They all deserve a special page in the book of human history.

This foldable device will mark a giant shift in man-machine interface. They will make history. They will rewrite the book. They will change the game. Samsung makes the rules now. This is the Model T to Apple’s iHorse. Watch.

Until it was too late? They were very quick to recall the phones and were generally praised on how well they handled the situation.
