It's not stupid, on the contrary it's eminently sensible. If you need a plug you can buy one, if like literally billions of people, you have plenty already then you can buy a phone without one. This way you have a choice. It's the only sensible option I can see.
When someone spends 1000$ on a phone, it’s bad etiquette to make them spend more money to then actually use it, especially in a global recession. If you remember watching the keynote where they announced the separate stand price for the monitor it was met with instant criticism from the crowd. When it comes to the iPhone this could be something that could put more than enough of a bad taste in people’s mouth to just buy something else.

I thought this was dumb at first but the more I think about it, the smarter it sounds.
  1. Most people have chargers lying around already.
  2. When I got my iPhone X I got a Qi wireless charger from Mophie. It will likely last me many years and phones to come.
  3. 99% of consumers won’t care about getting scarier if the price is cheaper.
  4. Not to mention the environmental impacts.

I don't see why all the hate. I've been waiting for years that they do this, it's just stupid creating waste by giving a charger with every products. As it is, it gives little extra value to the product.

Still, considering the cost of manufacturing of the phone is the same, I would expect a price decrease as well.

Same price, not cheaper...remember others offer 5G for 100$ more

But how would you ever measure that? Maybe they put in more flash storage or a better screen. How would you know what the price would have been without leaving out the accessories?

An iPhone is always more expensive than the cost of its components. The production cost of an iPhone 11 Pro Max is about $490.50. The retail price of an iPhone is always made up by Apple.
I'm assuming they will continue to sell the 64GB iPhone 12 for $699 and the Pro for $999, so without the Ear Pods and the charger, they should sell it for $649 and $949.

Alternatively they could just include a voucher for Ear Pods and a charger in the box.

I can understand this decision provided they directly address e-waste, rather than coming up with some horrible spiel about the box being nicer.

I'm honestly all for it, have enough Lightning cables and 5w plugs at home.

Apple will save more from reducing packaging and increasing the number of iPhones per pallet for shipping than from removing the charger and headphones.

I have so many GD adapters and headsets after 11 years of iPhones and iPads...

I had the same theory when Ming posted there wont be charger and earpieces.

But then I check the planes currently sending iPhone is already operating at close to Maximum cargo weight. There aren't any meaningful shipping cost saving with smaller package since the weight will be roughly the same.

Although At Apple's Scale that is still going to be tens of millions of saving per year.

Edit: Doing a more accurate calculation.

Apple manage to shave off the packaging weight from iPhone 6 era to iPhone 7/8 era where the Plus has a shipping weight of 390g.That is inclusive of Apple's packaging.

The weight of iPhone 7 Plus is 188g, the 5W Charger is 27g, EarPods 33g ( Yes I am surprised the EarPod is actually heavier than charger ), lightning cable is 18g,

The total packaging weight is 390g - 188 - 27 -33 - 18 - ~10 for the book and sim pins. = 114g.

Getting Rid of Charger and EarPods saves your 60 grams, I dont think you can really half the packing size. But Apple could use slightly thinner material in the box so the weight would be half. So let say Apple make a 57g reduction in packaging. The combined reduction would be 117g.

That means Apple could tout its packaging is 50% reduction in weight, and 30% reduction in total shipping. Which in turn would save them 30% shipping cost may be tens of millions every year*. And the Carbon footprint reduction.

* Flight from China to US is roughly $3 -5/Kg, and I would be surprised if Apple even Pay $3/kg on their Shipment. That is saving of $0.35 per iPhone, and since 60%+ of iPhone are sold outside US, the shipping saving wouldn't be much especially within China. But over 200M iPhone per year that would still be tens of millions.

Note: You have to take into account iPhone Pro will be heavier this year due to size changes. And Actual phone weight changes with generation to generation along with battery sizes.. So I doubt saving shipping cost is really something they were aiming to achieve. More likely the environmental impact and PR value.

Exactly. The cost of the charger and earphone components might be 10$, even though the retail price is 50$. The cost of doubling flash might also be 10$ even though the retail price is also 50$.

So if they decide to double the flash and kill the charger, it would still be "fair", even though the retail price doesn't change. There's no way to actually tell. The charger is just more tangible.

Alternatively they could just include a voucher for Ear Pods and a charger in the box.

That's what I suggest, also. And allow getting App Store credit instead of a charger. That makes it very tangible and still a benefit for everybody.

“Lol”
they will probably proudly announce that the iPhone will come with the "incredible new technology 5G" while keeping the same price*

*ignoring the fact that it will come without charger or earphones, saving them some extra bugs, probably even on distrubtion

As an alternative they will present some pretty charts showing how many people have already a lot of chargers at home and that Apple does it's best to be environmental, by giving customers, who still need one, the opportunity, to purchase the incredible new charger individually at only "xy dollars"
It's hard for me to belive it.

I have and iPhone 7, so I have power brick.. but 5W. So with new iPhone I have to either buy one 18/20W from apple or one from third party company.

This. is. just. stupic. lol
I have no problem if they leave out the Ear Pods and the charger. But the price of the phone needs to be adjusted if
they leave out $29 headphones and the $19 charger.
I can understand the view that pretty much everyone already has a big collection of chargers, but the media will definitely take the negative view. "A $1000 phone without a charger? Absurd!"

To the author: Your usage of "in lieu of" is way off. It doesn't mean "without"; it means "in place of".
“exquisite” my ass... What a despicable decision not include the charger nor earpods.
They will diminish the price of these accessories on iPhone’s final price? I doubt it.
"Exquisite" Come on!!! We are so privileged to buy a product that used to come with accessories. I presume they will be cheaper to the tune of the cost of replacing those accessories ? Im not holding my breath......
If they don’t at least include the power brick with the pro’s then they lost their minds.

To be fair, the Galaxy with 5G came out bulky as hell and with a 25% price increase compared to the previous model (1000 vs. 750). If Apple manages to keep the same size and price of last year model I prefer it to pay 25% more and get a charger and a pair of headphones that I would not use anyway.

...And what's wrong with that? Most people DO already have chargers, and it's terrible for the environment. It's not like you HAVE to buy them from apple either, you have options. Cost savings would be nice, but this is Apple. Nuff said.

Just most are saying, the media headlines will be harsh. Maybe Apple is planning some damage control. They can play the ecology card, showing photos of vast landfills populated with thousands of disposed chargers, the camera can zoom into some seagulls mistakenly eaten the cable thinking that they are noodles. Maybe just maybe, they will offer an online-only discount if you buy an Apple wireless charger (a single device charger, no the inflamable version)/AirPods right away with your iPhone. Someone commented about making it an easy transition to a port-less iPhone and I agree 100%. In the end it’s the same model that they use with Mac, where you need to buy a bunch of adapters and probably an extension cord just to have the same functionality offered by the previous device.

Apple loves do this kind of stuff in stages.

I was expecting the EarPods getting removed this year, not the charger.

Also, with that move, they can't even replace Lightning in favor of USB-C because that'd alienate their current base, even if you can find good USB-C cables at any gas station these days.

USB-C on the iPhone is at the top of my wishlist but I get it.

Exquisite packaging which a lot of people throw away, so tell me again how this is not environmentally irresponsible? Let's use some common sense (I know thats a rarity these days). Apple claims part of the reasoning is environment which as we all know is b.s. So instead of including an AC adapter in the existing packaging, they instead sell an AC adaptor is a whole new separate box and more packaging - all we are doing is shifting packaging from one box to two boxes so how is that "environmentally" responsible? It sounds dodgy and simply an excused to milk Apple customers of more money.

C'mon - this is absolutely the correct thing to do. It saves on carbon emissions for shipping large boxes that are 50% empty space anyway, and saves on e-waste for the chargers and headphones.

The correct way to handle it so to deduct the cost of a charger from the retail price of the phone, so if you want a charger it's sold as an optional add-on at point of purchase.

Be sure - the rest of the industry will follow suit in no time (just like removing headphone jacks).
