Apple only just started including the 18 watt charger with the 11 less than a year ago. If most people don’t have it, does that really make it superfluous?

If Apple keeps charging for the iPhone at the prices they do now, it’s not much of a choice. It’s Apple saving money on packaging and shipping, then being even more greedy on top of that.
It's not a money saving, it's still a choice.

And yeah, for many people, such as myself, a faster charger is still superfluous. My phone is fully charged when I wake up, so it doesn't need a faster charger. In fact there's a software features in iOS to actually delay the final bit of charging.

I have and iPhone 7, so I have power brick.. but 5W. So with new iPhone I have to either buy one 18/20W from apple or one from third party company.
Why? The 5W charger will easily charge your device overnight. And it’ll do it with less heat which will mean the battery will be in better condition a year or two from now.

If you really need speed - there are 100 watt USB chargers. This iPhone won’t charge that fast but it will use more than 20W, and future iPhones / other devices will use the full 100W.

Also, are you going to toss your perfectly good 5W charger and cable into landfill? Apple doesn’t want anybody doing that unless they actually need to.

I have nine apple charger bricks and a bunch of other brands I’ve tossed in landfill. And a drawer full of cables and ear buds that have never been used Seriously I don’t need more of them.

I honestly don't understand this.
How many people will be buying their first ever iPhone?
How many people have held onto their first iPhone for years?

In both instances some one is either buying a $1000+ phone with no way to charge it or they only have a years old worn out 5w charger that Apple stubbornly kept as the only one included with new phones.

Just because Apple brings a new phone out every year, doesn't mean customers are buying a new phone every year and have dozens of the 5w chargers floating around.

Not really bothered by this news but I will say one thing, I have bought several iphones, what I love is the box, the size of it, the weight. It feels like something very powerful and futuristic you have in your hands. It's a perfect box.

I hope no one copy/pastes this on to some site that takes the piss out of apple fans. I'd seem like a complete weirdo.

Shame they have to make it lighter and smaller, will detract from the experience. In my humble.

If a new and better charger is superfluous then so is a new phone. Also giving someone the “choice” to spend more money on what was previously included sounds quite fictitious to me.

As an alternative they will present some pretty charts showing how many people have already a lot of chargers at home and that Apple does it's best to be environmental...

This is true, though, for so many Apple customers - I have multiple Apple chargers and EarPods lying around the household not doing much.

I was reading this thread, and liking/disliking some of the posts when it hit me. This whole thread is ridiculous.

The iPhone is a device that needs to be charged in order to work. It should be included in the box. Citing environmental reasons that people already have chargers etc. is just making excuses for a company that considers itself a boutique brand, but is nickel and diming its customers.

Put a damn charger in the box. This is one case where thinking outside the box is just not good old fashioned common sense. If this rumor is true, I believe it’s going to hurt Apple’s image no matter how they try and spin it.

The next time I buy a winter coat, I hope they include a hood. Maybe when Coach sells briefcases, they should sell the shoulder strap separately. Shoes? I have shoelaces from another pair I can use.

Okay. I’m done.

Edit: Fixed typo.

Sure kill the environment, why not... If you don't like it don't buy an iPhone? I guarantee you, a few years from now all the other phone manufacturers will do the same, despite everyone taking the micky out of Apple for doing so. Remember the headphone jack? The notch? The list goes on. Get used to it, it's happening.

I guarantee you’re wrong.

Edit: The notch still sucks.

That's subjective. I think it's bad etiquette to fill the world with superfluous chargers.

What's objective fact is that currently you have no choice - all new iPhones come with a charger; this new approach adds choice.

What kind of logic is this? You have no "choice" in either case. And in both cases you can pick another charger.

There was a rumour not too long ago that the prices will go down on the new phones. That would make sense to leave out the EarPods so that those who needs them would buy them with the phone (for roughly the same price as current phones). If not, it doesn't make any sense.

So Apple will save $5 per phone and charge us $50 per charger and headphone combination. What a chincy company. I am sure other companies can follow this brave move and not include power cords. Apple talks about how moral they are while working to screw every customer just a little more.

Aside from the typo, exactly, dead on, correct. I couldn't put my finger on it - the arguments for the environment are plausible - but this is why it irks me.

Going from a iPhone 7S i want a new charger and I won’t pay extra to get one.

Greedy Apple and they are using the environment as an excuse pathetic!

If true, I’m guessing many people are part of the upgrade program so those that are, have a new brick already. I don’t think I’ve ever used mine to date. Either prices will come down or all of this is to make the margins higher. I’ll say a bit of both.

I really only charge it at night. While traveling I have portal power charger with a high-power USB charging port (or I use my MBP charger for super fast charging). Simply put, I certainly do not a new power brick every year. It’s wasteful. I’d rather have iPhone prices come down and save on packaging waste as well.

I’m one stop short of an apple fanatic

But if apple stops including freaking CHARGERS with them then I will never be buying another iPhone.

I could deal with the nonsensical 3.5mm elimination, but this would be so moronic I can’t deal. I’ll be out and will go android

iPods also don’t come with a charger... they never did.

Would be fun if only the pro model would have a charger...
do you realize how many space they gonna save when shipping the phones through containers? 1 cargo container could fit 3-4 times more iphones If they make the box thinner without charger and earpods, and they even save a lot of paper. That’s where the money at. We’re talking apple here. $1 cost saved means $60-80M gets into apple’s pocket.

It's a complicated matter IMO.

Take the iPhone Xr for instance. Off course it sold really well but they faced the public* backlash against the PPI of the LCD screen and off course it always hurt sales at some capacity. It's not a case of "they made a ******** of money", this is absolutely correct but they could have earned much more if they decided to spend a little on a higher resolution screen.

*Despite the best efforts of Jonathan Morrison.

If they don’t at least include the power brick with the pro’s then they lost their minds.

Sadly, they haven't. They know people won't hold out on the purchase for such a reason, as stingy as it is.

But if it’s usb-c you’ll need a new charger. Maybe they’ll have the new wireless charging.

The $50 bucks includes warranty and support. If you don't need either, buy a knock-off, which I'm sure will be/are available. I don't expect the price of the phone to be reduced by this, but I expect the price of the phone not to go up.

Clearly a break with tradition for many of the reasons listed in this thread.
