... and there is no way that you can just slide down your mask for a second to unlook or just simply enter your unlock code, right? You need an Touch-ID Button to unlock your phone because otherwise you are lost?

Just because I'd like a more convenient feature doesn't mean I'm saying I'm unable to use FaceID - I'd prefer TouchID because it's inconvenient to pull my mask down throughout the day, just like it was inconvenient to type in the passcode.

If there was just nothing really new to put in the iPhone 12 (same story as 11), they at least could've put that and call it a day, otherwise what have been the whole iPhone division (designers, not the SoC engineers) doing this last 2 years?

There’s a long list of new features in the iPhone 12. Constantly repeating the same falsehood is just inane. It makes you look foolish.

Last year, people were saying the iPhone 11 was worthless because it didn’t have 5G — even though there was almost no place in the US to use 5G.

This year, the new iPhone has 5G, and everyone’s saying it’s worthless because it doesn’t have 120 Hz refresh. Or Touch ID. Or just the right shade of black glass.

Shaking my head.

If you’re never out, why do you need TouchId then? Seems like you highly overpaid for a device that you barely use the functionality.

I think he meant he was “never out” of battery...rather than always staying indoors!

EDIT...I stand corrected...he apparently doesn’t go out!

I could well imagine Apple have developed a Face ID + Mask algorithm. After all, they developed hand washing functionality for the watch.

Whilst this is 100% speculation on my part, I wouldn’t be surprised. They‘d get good media attention as well as solving a really annoying day to day issue.

Fingers crossed this happens tomorrow! :)

Higher and narrower notch on 5.4? I hope it wont look like that ugly "tooth" on Pixel 4.

I wish they would just get rid of face id, put cutout hole camera on the front and new iPad Air-like touch id on power button... latest Android phones looks so much nicer that iPhones to me because of such arrangent and it's more useful too, especially in this mask-wearing times. Fingerprint sensor on back is not really my cup of tea, but still better that faceid...

I doubt apple are going to downgrade to Touch ID. It’s less secure for a start, and less convenient.

the iPad Air will have Face ID very soon now that’s it’s adopted the iPad Pro form factor. It’ll be price/supply that’s stopping the air from having Face ID this year.

Just remember, that it was Ive’s ‘exquisite’ design and engineering that brought us the Butterfly Keyboard...and the several years of denials about the overwhelming problems with that design. Likewise the one-port MacBook, which was what Apple had tried initially with the original Air. All building toward Jonny’s ultimate design goal: a device with no ports or apertures of any kind...a solid-appearing slab of tech. Screen and blank back, edges, and sides. So while I don’t disagree that Cook is no great visionary, I also think that he brings needed pragmatism to implementation. Though I do fear that he may weigh too heavily on the side of saving money versus actual value to the Apple consumer. The storage pricing tiers are my particular objections. Far too little as the base starting point for $1K+ devices!
People seem to choose to ignore the fact that while Ive designed the butterfly keyboard, the top man - Cook - happily allowed it to be sold for three or four years knowing that it was problematic. Does he run the company or not?

What type of mask? It is likely that if face recognition works with the mask the phone may be unlocked by every second dude out there.

My iPhone XS Max started to unlock with any mask about 2 months ago but for some reason it only works to unlock the phone itself (I let some friends try it and it did not work for them). It does not work to unlock for example WhatsApp, which is also using FaceId to unlock. It also does not work if I wear a mask and a beanie (it is starting to get cold here) at the same time but mask only, I get a 100% success rate.

Leaker Max Weinbach has today shared new "finalized and revised" information about the upcoming iPhone 12 via his Twitter account @PineLeaks.

iphone-12-colors.jpg

Weinbach states that the "most important things" about the new iPhones were already revealed by Chinese Weibo user "Kang" via an extensive leak on Friday, but he does offer some specific new information.

Apple is reportedly still intending to ship the "dynamic zoning algorithm" feature, which could allow for faster Face ID. The notch may only be reduced in width on the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini due to its smaller size. This would be achieved by arranging the components of the TrueDepth camera system more "tightly," but at the cost of increasing its height. Alleged images of the iPhone 12 mini's screen emerged in July, which seemed to show a smaller notch.

Weinbach believes that all iPhone 12 models will gain significantly improved digital zoom via software enhancements, and the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will also benefit from improved optical zoom.

There may also be "a sort of macro camera" feature and the ultrawide lens aperture on Pro models may also be able to get closer to subjects, although these are not expected to be headline features. The ultrawide lens is also speculated to have up to a 35% larger aperture to improve low-light performance.

The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are claimed to have a boost of at least one hour to battery life, but the iPhone 12 mini's battery life is expected to perform worse than the iPhone 11 due to its size.

Weinbach also reinforced previous claims about iPhone 12 models likely supporting 4K video at 120 or 240 frames per second.

The report is apparently based on recent updates from sources that were received over the past three weeks. The iPhone 12 lineup is almost certain to be revealed on Tuesday at Apple's "Hi, Speed" event.

If that's it than IMO it sounds like a dud. More battery life? I'm too good on mine right now. More ZOOM? REALLY? No words for that one. Faster Face ID? Uh, ok.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about a new iPhone anymore? Its always the same.
- Faster CPU
- Better camera
- Better Battery-life

...I think I am gonna be stuck with my 10S Max for a long time.
and not even much better and b4 ppl attacking saying its a phone what do you want. well we all know even as phone camera, there can still be good enough improvement as shown by other phones and lets b honest without other phone companies , apple likely won't even have night mode to begin with if it were not for the huge attention other brand got from night mode or zoom

the data I’ve seen is that Touch ID will unlock a phone incorrectly more often than Face ID. apple posted the figures.
Touch-ID was 50.000 : 1 vs. Face-ID 1.000.000 : 1 fail rate so Face-ID is definitely more secure.

trust me, while these seem like minor upgrades on the surface, the things that seem incremental eventually are going to be huge.
These year over year processor bumps seem tiny on the iPhone, but this is all building to one super powerful Apple powered Mac line up. These new ARM Macs are going to be absolute screamers.
And while these camera and lightR things seem small, once they introduce Apple glass, it will all make sense.
Trust me, Apple does a lot of things that don’t make sense at first, but once you see the products that they are leading towards, it really makes you understand their vision

Great, even more future projecting and hoping. Haven't we done enough of it in the last few years, since Tim started talking about the pipeline? Doesn't it all feel a bit like spaghetti on the wall already?

Revisionist history. You are forgetting the 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, and 5 (which was a longer 4 in design). Jobs was a great leader, but let's not make him out to be someone that took big design risks, because he didn't. Don't get me wrong, I loved all those phones, but he did the same thing that Cook is doing now.

I don't think I'm the one being revisionist here. Other than the "antennagate", the 4 was a fantastic industry-defining product, and packed more innovation in one outing than 3 generations of Cook's iPhones put together. 4S was a logical continuation. Jobs wasn't alive when 5 was released. When we talk design risks, it's not just the phone and let's look at things in context, shall we? Like, what resources and tech were available to them in early 2000's. Besides, if reviving Apple from the dead with new designs and products across the board isn't a risk, I don't know what the hell is. Apple now has virtually unlimited resources, strongest brand loyalty ever, and the only limit is their own imagination. And what do they do with it?

Just remember, that it was Ive’s ‘exquisite’ design and engineering that brought us the Butterfly Keyboard...and the several years of denials about the overwhelming problems with that design. Likewise the one-port MacBook, which was what Apple had tried initially with the original Air. All building toward Jonny’s ultimate design goal: a device with no ports or apertures of any kind...a solid-appearing slab of tech. Screen and blank back, edges, and sides. Ive could not operate by himself without succumbing to his vanity. He needed Jobs to steer his talent and keep his preciosity in check. It's the collaboration of the two that led to great products. There were still screaming mistakes for sure, like the puck mouse. Tim just doesn't have that capacity nor interest for product and design thinking. You'd feel sometimes Ive's designs would come as a curveball to Tim as if he's never reviewed the work in development. I don't think the butterfly denial was Ive's issue, as much as Cook not wanting to invest in redesigns. And the storage options are all Cook squeezing blood out of a stone.

You're flat out ignoring the 6/7 to X display changes and FaceID, the Apple Watch, iPad Pro line, Apple Pencil, etc.

Steve was indeed more of a visionary but Cook has vision about health and has just a good of a track record of putting people in place to be creative and execute.

None of that is "repeating the same devices for 9 years."

What you're really complaining about is how the product has matured just like the desktop/laptops we all use. They haven't been exciting in years. Oh and you're also ignoring the already announced Apple Silicon Macs that are apparently going to be revealed in November. The more I read what you wrote the more I realize that you're extremely biased about Cook.

I'm not ignoring anything. What you're describing is still iterative updates on component/peripheral level upon existing devices. The Watch is the only fundamentally new device; the AirPods are a cool peripheral and the pencil is a stylus they got right on the second take (but still sell the awful OG because reasons). Tim putting people in place to be creative? He's completely indifferent about design and engineering, even his own people say so!

As for repeating the same devices for 9 years, how else can you describe the iMac? Yea sure they announced Apple silicon Macs, tell me something I don't know. Having worked with people in the semiconductor industry, it will take a few generations for them to actually perform as advertised. Curious if there will be an actual industrial design refresh, finally. The proof is in the pudding, and when they've been ruining perfectly good products on a good day (2016 MacBook Pro's), there will be a LOT to prove.

Admittedly it was annoying when I first experienced this change. You just adjust to change and it becomes second nature to you. It wasn't long before I found the old method more annoying when encountering an older iPhone.

I still think the top right corner CC is a nuisance and leads to some uncomfortable thumb gymnastics. However, iOS 14 has this nifty feature that lets you invoke the CC with a double back tap.

well no, as usual for Apple, they ignore their own arguments and claims, when it‘s convenient.

Hence having the pinnacle of security is unnecessary for the SE, the iPod and the latest iPad.

They will do eventually, once the technology is cheap enough to put in the lower price devices. This is how new technology works!

Touch-ID was 50.000 : 1 vs. Face-ID 1.000.000 : 1 fail rate so Face-ID is definetly more secure.
Well sorta. I assume you are referring to false positives (allows access when it shouldn’t). But It is easier to find your face doppelgänger than your finger doppelgänger! Personally I’ve found false negatives (doesn’t work when it should) for faceid to be much higher than touchID. And of course that has skyrocketed lately for obvious reasons.

I guess I must be getting tired of all the new innovations that are not really exciting innovations any more, but more of the same incremental changes, further market segmentation and cost optimisations.
I understand guessing can be a fun game. But this whole rumor industry on trying to predict most accurately what a new release will be just days before the public release, this is just meaningless.
People are getting angry about features that are perceivably missing, a portion of people even doom releases that have not happened yet to be be a complete fail and mistake ... etc. None of this has even be confirmed yet.
This has become panem et circenses, a continuous show for attention and money.
This is Monday, and I'm moving on to some real news that matter.
