Leaker: iPhone 12 Lineup to Feature Faster Face ID, Improved Zoom, and Longer Battery Life

Is Tim Cook really more stubborn than Steve Jobs on things like this? it's hard to believe honestly, but apparently so.

Steve may have been stubborn but he had fantastic ideas, gut feel, love for design and products, and keen market intuition. It may have worked for him not listening to user research because he was already ahead of the curve. Tim clearly has no ideas or vision of his own, no interest in design and engineering (Ive would complain about that too) and plays it extremely safe by repeating the same devices for the last 9 years with annual spec boosts or feature culling for extra Genius Bar/dongle revenue, while being a social cause butterfly dreaming of making TV series rather than great hardware and software. What’s stubborn is that he carries on without listening to his users’ screaming needs, now also having the plot armor of too-big-to-fail Apple.

I’d like to see a source that says it will (drain the battery faster)...outside of a poor implementation.

Power consumption of 5G phones is about 20% more than 4G phones. 5G is faster and is going to put more stress on the phone hence the battery drain. Its common knowledge that 5G is a bigger drain on a phones battery than 4G. Its why manufacturers continue to put larger batteries in 5G phones and why the iPhone battery this year will most likely be larger.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about a new iPhone anymore? Its always the same.
- Faster CPU
- Better camera
- Better Battery-life

...I think I am gonna be stuck with my 10S Max for a long time.

I wouldn't mind downsizing my XS Max, but it's super hard to justify the spend for just to downsize.

My wife and I are pretty excited to upgrade this year. The 5.4 inch iPhone 12 will be a major upgrade from her 6S. I am looking forward to a far better camera with good low light capability, 5G, and faster processor than on my iPhone X. Faster FaceID will be a benefit. My wife recently bought an iPad Pro and fell in love with FaceID. She is really excited about getting it on her phone. These phones will sell like crazy. As is typically the case, they likely will be more beautiful than the mock-ups suggest. Bring on Tuesday.

So another round of camera improvements - I don't know about most people but I don't do anything intensive enough on my phone to warrant the ever-incrementing processor improvements, despite how technically impressive they are.

The average person probably spends more time taking photos and videos on his phone than talking today. Have you looked at the current rate plans for the wireless carriers? They’re selling data these days, with voice and texting thrown in as an afterthought.

I wish there was an iPhone without a camera. I’m of the older generation that doesn’t feel the need to take pictures of my dinner or of my face interfering with a scenic view all the bl**dy time. They can do an iPhone Max Narcissist model for that.

Google “Cricket phone”.

Judging by the replies in this thread and others, it should be easy to get a Pro Max on release date. Reality might be different though. Will be trading my 11 Pro Max for a 12 Pro Max and looking forward to it no matter how much others may think its not worth it.

As a photographer, I make photos every day with my iPhone, starting about 8 years ago with an iPhone 5s, and using an iPhone X now. Looking forward to jumping to the 12 Pro Max. I made the photo below from my iPhone 6+ years ago.

On the flip side, to take Apple to where it is today, proves the "social cause butterfly" Tim has what it takes in terms of drive, vision. Ya'll can criticize and nitpick on Tim's management style but the universe does not agree with this. It's not an accident that Apple is where it is and Tim is leading Apple giving their overall customer base what they are looking for...even if some don't agree, and others have claimed to go over to Android.

Apples' hardware and software is great, that's not even up for debate. Tim and Apple isn't bound to build a few vocal MR posters the exact phone they are looking for. I'm sure those specs exist on some phone that is for sale today.

Adding an additional radio is always going to increase the battery drain. Unless it’s something like RFID that can draw power from the environment.

What is that notch for? I'm just watching my samsung s10...
Apple: year 2016
Samsung huawei xiaomi: year 2020

You're flat out ignoring the 6/7 to X display changes and FaceID, the Apple Watch, iPad Pro line, Apple Pencil, etc.

Steve was indeed more of a visionary but Cook has vision about health and has just a good of a track record of putting people in place to be creative and execute.

None of that is "repeating the same devices for 9 years."

What you're really complaining about is how the product has matured just like the desktop/laptops we all use. They haven't been exciting in years. Oh and you're also ignoring the already announced Apple Silicon Macs that are apparently going to be revealed in November. The more I read what you wrote the more I realize that you're extremely biased about Cook.

Some of those same 5g phones have 120mhz+ displays. So it's tough to know why exactly a bigger battery is needed. But it seems to me, and why I asked, that getting more data faster in a shorter period of time is the equivalent of getting the same data amount at a slower speed in a longer period of time in terms of battery usage.

Turn LTE off on your iPhone and watch how much your battery improves.

You have clearly a cursory knowledge of these subjects and should leave the detailed analysis to others. Nuance is king.

First-gen 5G chipsets definitely sucked more juice, especially for mmwave usage, but Apple will be using a second-gen Qualcomm X55 chipset. Next year they will likely be using the X60 chipset which will improve further and be based on TSMC 5nm design.

Of course in certain usage situations the new iPhone will use more battery, but we don't know how well the X55 chipset will perform with Apple's proprietary antenna design. Apple will surely compensate by either increasing efficiency elsewhere, or adding extra battery capacity, or both. For many people, especially outside of mmwave areas, this new phone will likely offer better reception (Qualcomm vs Intel) AND better battery life. Looking at a single component is meaningless without putting it in context of overall battery usage (screen, processor, memory, software optimization, antenna design, etc.)

I get what you are saying, but I don't think it's that cut and dry. We'll actually have to see use cases and battery tests to confirm, a hypothetical scenario of this: "how much battery is sacrificed in downloading 1 gig..from LTE from 5G? Within that, fringe reception scenarios, couple of bars, full bars, mmwave vs sub-6...vs wifi. Lots of nuances.
