Really hope he is wrong. Prosser is implying that he is. After 3 years it would be really lame if you can’t shrink that huge notch.

FaceID Never fails me while on TouchID I used a short and therefore somewhat insecure Passcode cuz I had to type it in ALL the time.

also it took me like 5 minutes to get used to the notch. I don’t even see it like what’s the difference between a notch, that at least gives u useable space on both sides compared to the big as bezel we used to have pre X
Honestly, how in the world do you not see it? You must just not care about design elements? What about turning the iPhone horizontal and watching a wider aspect video?

I simply don’t understand it other than to say some people just don’t care about asymmetrical design. Plus, it makes me want to puke with what Apple ha turned into. The whole problem Jobs stared so many times is Tim Cook is not a product person. It shows so badly. Lots of insiders have reported that Jony Ive and others in design feel the company didn’t care about their design efforts. CEO and his executive team just went forward with their annual plan to take as much profits for themselves as Tim Cook got $140m in stock vested/grants for his work last year!

These numbers are never recorded in employee pay, but I believe they should be.I am not worried about a CEO making a fortune if they do it in a way that doesn’t just bring short-term results to get those incentives. But I see Cook destroying the long-term viability of Apple.

It has been product after product that are really not innovative in any way. The new MacBook Pros fixed the keyboards that have been messed up for years. They didn’t take any technology steps forward. The product lines are all crammed. Cook doesn’t understand his own strategy. It’s sad, as Apple will lose all of the great talent and end up with nothing as the next tech overtakes phones.

I want Tim Cook to Make Apple Great Again., but I just don’t think he has the knowledge or desire to understand. Let’s recycle the iPhone 6 again for iPhone SE 2020. Let’s make the MacBook Pro basically the exact same footprint from 2012-2015 and bring back the keyboard. And everyone rewards them by just bringing it back to acceptable product line. But all of these iPad models are an atrocity to simplicity. There are too many choices leading to consumer indecision. Now, Apple is not ready for this next five-plus-year cycle where the US will see stagnation after the bubble bursts. The economy will fail, the Dollar will become worth less, and Apple has a mess whether it’s outdated iPhones, never redesigned iMacs, MacBook Pros that go back to the era that Steve Jobs probably designed in Retina MBPs as his last products.

I will take just a hole-punch camera for a year but then fix it for next year. Learn from competition and make products that outshine competitors. Apple used to be at the forefront of innovation but now Apple just copies ideas and really rests with outdated designs like huge bezels, outdated screen tech scissor switches in original MBP.

It’s a travesty what the Board has done to allow TC to keep destroying Apple. TC has enough money, and I think he should do what he can to change the world as he sure cannot change anything at Apple for the better. Rehash old designs, rest with huge bezels, complicate product lines, adopt new technology without thinking about how is it actually better than prior to TC taking over.

It’s a cash cow, but they need stars that outshine in new products. They have only increased the value of the stock by paying way too much money to buy back stock rather than spend on innovation and R&D to create the next generation of products and improve the company for the next CEO. Whoever comes in next will have a difficult time.

I think Cook would make a better President of USA. Let someone more qualified run Apple.

Here’s my best guess at what’s happening here:
  • Apple is intentionally deceiving leakers by showing the same size notch on the 5.4” model and the same camera array on the two larger models (or, perhaps the notch will only shrink on the Pro models).
  • Apple is intentionally not showing the front of the two larger models, perhaps to not reveal slightly thinner bezels (and/or a smaller notch).
  • The notch will indeed be smaller, and the cameras will appear as we’ve been expecting them to in the models that are announced in the Fall (with the 5.4” model potentially getting the older notch design).
I hope I’m wrong about the 5.4” model as I plan to buy it, but I could see Apple wanting to differentiate even more by giving the smaller and less expensive model the old notch design.

I’ve been lurking for the longest time and I made an account just to say how EAP is the pits when it comes to tech youtube. He’s basically clickbait and is overhyping every news he can get from leakers or people like Jon and backs it up with renders for the gullible internet.

An explanation to this could be that the CAD files are specifications for cases. Anything that involves the notch or what’s inside the camera (bump) won’t affect the case. So it’s a matter of filling in these small details that do not affect dimensions. For all we know they’ve all been sent only the necessary dimensions but not the details and they just filled it up. If you buy iPhone cases you’ll see incorrect renders all the times.

what if it is a fingerprint scanner on the side of the phone!
like some rumors suggested for a cheap 2021 model

Unlikely but I hope so. The fingerprint scanner on the side power button of the Sony Z5 Compact was perfectly designed and implemented. So fast and not too small.

I could see Apple wanting to differentiate even more by giving the smaller and less expensive model the old notch design.

There would then be two sets of notch parts to source and manufacture. Mr Supply Chain Tim Cook would not like that. The notches on the XR and XS were the same.

Why would Apple want to mislead leakers with something better than what they're actually going to bring out? "Surprise, the real this is actually worse" doesn't really make for good headlines.

EDIT: I re-read your comment and now realize that you misunderstood what I was saying. I'm not saying that Apple is misleading leakers with something better than they're actually going to bring out. Instead, I'm saying the opposite. I'm saying that they're misleading leakers with the same sized notch and the same camera array, and they'll surprise customers by launching something better - smaller sized notch and improved camera array (at least for the Pro models). Even if Apple decides to keep the notch the same size on the non-Pro models, what they're showing you here is just that. Apple wants to create misinformation so as to drive leakers in the wrong direction, and to maintain the element of surprise for customers.

Why would Apple leak features that are amazing or better, then come out with a phone to have less features? That doesn't make sense. Wouldn't you want to meet or exceed expectations, not lower them.

Yeah, Cook has only added $1.2 trillion to Apple in the single largest value creation of any CEO in history. Totally incompetent.

Doubtful that the LiDAR will be exclusive to the Max. Apple wants to get the LiDAR in as many hands as possible to push developers to take advantage of it and accelerate the advancement of the technology. Not to mention, it’s almost insulting to ask people to spend a premium for a *Pro* and then not give them the all latest technology.

Sticking with my 11 Pro Max at least until their "port-less, bezel-less, notch-less" mmWave 5G phone. All 3 of those points being checked off probably not happening until iPhone 14.

LiDAR and 3D mapping from the camera rear! Excellent move by Apple, with their AR research coming to fruition. That alone is reason enough for me to upgrade from my X.

As an aside, back when the iPhone X was released Cook characterized it as a (paraphrased) technology demonstrator, with the front facing 3D camera. I suspect Apple has learned a lot from that piece of technology over the last three years, which has lead to releasing the 12.

I'm a fan of his channel but damn, he can be so naive at times. Just because he got this CAD that case manufacturers use, doesn't mean this is the final design. Does he really think Apple will send the finished CAD model before the phone is released?

Not only that but the LiDAR array is supposed to fit in the already existing camera bump, a CAD for case manufacturers wouldn’t require the full spec of every sensor in that area.

I don’t believe this at all. I think by now they are able to make the notch smaller and the Pro / Pro Max should be essentially the same phones just in different sizes.

A reduced notch is such a minimalistic change, how would that have any impact on a consumer Decision in terms of upgrading their phone? If it happens, great. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t change the aspect of the iPhone for what it is, it’s the technology moving forward that Apple will market on stage, not a reduced notch.

Bingo! Over the three years I've owned my X, I've probably thought about the notch a total of 10 seconds.

I am though super-stoked about rear-facing LiDAR potentially coming to the 12, and with that, interesting AR-based apps.

Not surprised at all. They need to leave something for next year's iPhones.

They'll make this year iPhones with the new body, 5G, Lidar in 6,7 Pro, (maybe) 6GB of ram in Pros, OLEDs in "budget" 5,4&6,1 and that'll be all (except for things like lil better speakers, cameras and so on), with the new body and 5G being the main upgrades.

Adding to that smaller notch, more ram in every iPhone, Lidar in all Pros, 120HZ display, plus that rumored TouchID, would be just too much of the new hardware and features for one year upgrade. Let's not forget there are rumors that the base storage will start at 128GB for the same price.

Hopefully untrue, but any move to start adding features to only the oversized phones would be a very dark day for the iPhone.

The rumours of a 5.4" Pro model were exciting - a move back towards phone you could use properly with one hand without having to rely on the Reachability fudge all the time. Sadly that proved unfounded, and 6.1" is terrible news, but larger than that? No thanks.

Why would Apple think that people who want pro features also want a bad user experience? Let's hope it's not true.
