So it looks like at this point in time there are no cases currently available that fit like the apple cases have MagSafe and using real i coated leather. Not that I can find anyway.

Looks like the closest we get is the platinum case from Best Buy but it has no MagSafe according to some users here and has that dumb logo embossed into the back.

Thanks I did. Looks like they won’t be in stock for a while now. Ended up ordering the Platinum case from Best Buy. I can always easily return it.
I don’t really trust MagSafe car mounts anyway and they always will make an ugly circle on the back. We shall see if they are legit horween leather and if so then this should tickle everyone’s fancy when it comes to patina.

Earlier in the thread, there was some discussion about the iPhone 12 cases, and that newer production runs of those cases were better than the originals. On the box of the cases is listed the manufacture date (month/year). At what month were the updated models manufactured?

I just picked up a black 12 mini case from Best Buy for $20, but it was manufactured 10/2020, and has more of a rubbery smell than leather, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to try to get one from a later date.

I've done some digging by looking at current and past listings on ebay to try to get an idea about when such an update might have occurred. I'm looking for a 12 mini case, and I was not able to find any listing or picture of one of the original cases that was made any time other than 10/2020. The only case I found that wasn't made last October for the mini was the Deep Violet, which had the expected 03/2021 date. I'm guessing that since sales of the mini were lower than they expected, they probably only did a single run of these cases for the mini. Perhaps the larger phones got additional runs.

The wallet I picked up at the same time as my case, has a 03/2021 date. The leather look, feel, and smell between my case and wallet are identical.

At this point, I'll be calling of my search and just use the case I have.

I got 2 Apple cases (found cheaper at John Lewis so am returning one from Apple). One seems that the Apple logo is more pronounced than the other? Had to take a photo but what do you guys think?

For clarity, the platinum is as pictured on the inside picture of the product page. They are VERY proud of the horween, at least the branding, lol.

So, no magnet at all. There is a horween stamp on on the interior (can be seen better on the black one). There is also an obnoxious horween display on the back of the packaging.

No experience with best buy products but it does say "lifetime warranty"

Ya, I conditioned my case with Bickmore No. 4 (a leather conditioner), and it turned out similarly. The leather actually takes the conditioner, so while there is a protective coating there, it’s not totally impenetrable. Already got a minor ding on one of the edges and it removed a tiny flap of the top grain layer, and the scratched area has since darkened and is hardly noticeable without looking for it. Underneath the top layer was similarly dyed dark cherry leather, so the leather isn’t simply painted.

The other thing I’ve noticed is how prevalent the grain is on this year’s case. Mine has several distinct wrinkles on the back and even a few scars/pock marks, which are naturally present on the top layer of the hide. If the grain is corrected, it’s only very slight, as these naturally occurring blemishes are still there and add a lot of character to the leather.

Finally, the sides have gotten nice and grippy and are picking up a shine, consistent with where I hold the case.
Yes, it definitely took some of the oil. I applied a few coats. Besides the superior feel of it I think it is less bright and a tiny deeper orange/more brown which is great. I will continue applying coats now and again. But for now I love it.

I returned the platinum cases twice and now ended back with apple. I really like the horween leather and was excited for it to age. The fitment was great but after a day or two, I can hear like a creaking noise when I applied pressure to certain area of the back of the phone cases. It was almost like the case and phone weren’t sitting completely flushed.

But I gotta say the platinum case held the phone really snug. I had a hard time taking it off (which was a good thing).

Saddle brown on my 12 mini worn every day since 12/2020. The sides were half worn down so I grabbed a regular old towel and wiped it down to match (kinda crazy how easy the top layer wears off!)

That looks bad. How does the case feel still?
The worn spots on the sides are pretty smooth, but the case feels fine otherwise. I’ve never really cleaned it or done anything special to it otherwise.

I’m certainly a little frustrated that it hasn’t developed the patina like prior cases have, but it still holds up well if dropped and seems to provide plenty of protection. The corners have not poops off or anything, so it’s getting the job done.

Does anyone else find the buttons harder to click in this years leather cases? They’re definitely not as clicky as my iPhone 12 ones.

In my experience at least, there seems to be some variations from case to case. I have had a few of the leather offerings for the 13 PM. Buttons are not consistent and it seems the leather feel/smell is also different amongst them. One of my cases (which I returned) the volume down button didn't even click. Not sure if it was misaligned somehow over the button but strange nonetheless of the noise I am used to.

One of my cases has a good power button with less clicky volume buttons. And the other has awesome volume buttons with a garbage power button. I ended up just pinching the buttons between my fingers and wiggling back and forth for like 3 minutes. They all seem good now

Nah they’re the same I can’t tell a difference honestly

Ya, try working out the buttons when the case is off the phone. This helped make my volume buttons “clicky” when they were not initially.

Someone posted this earlier, not too good
I did…it didn’t age well for me. I didn’t like the dark edges. While taking off the case to send my 12 Pro Max back to VZW, the case snapped around the volume buttons. I trashed it. It did look more purple to me; but, lots of people say they saw blue when they saw it.

Pinching as in press the power and volume button inwards towards each other? With the phone inside the case or just the case itself?

Posted this earlier but what do you think about the 2 cases I have? Which would you choose? (The colour is the same by the way, just the light is different)

The top one for sure assuming all else is equal (no issues w/ fit, finish etc.)
