Exactly. And esr advetises these cases as

“Premium Top-Grain Leather
Crafted with high-quality leather that’s soft to the touch, provides great grip, and develops a natural patina over time, giving your phone a premium look and feel.”

false advertising at its finest. Lol
Can "genuine leather" contains PU substances or PU leather ?
Because top of ESR leather case is not soft and looks like PU leather and case doesn't smell like leather.
It seems that top layer will peel over time than makes patina.

It won’t peel but it will wear like crap because the paint gets trapped in the pressed fake grain. You can’t even sand it off because you will simply turn it back into the lower level suede which is basically is.

Quite good readings https://mahileather.com/blogs/news/full-grain-leather-what-how-and-why

"Hides are initially split into two layers - the top/grain layer and the split layer. The grain layer is used to make full grain, top grain, corrected grain and nubuck leather; it generally lasts longer, is stronger and ages better than split leather. Split leather has a loose fiber structure and is commonly given a printed texture to mimic grain leather. Split leather is also used to create suede."

"The term ‘genuine leather’ can be misleading consumers because although it is made with real leather, the leather used is of a low quality made from split leather, which is weaker than full grain leather. A lot of people see ‘genuine leather’ and think it’s synonymous with good quality leather but this is often not the case. Full grain leather is made from the top layer of the hide and is the regarded as the highest quality leather."

But it is still a smartphone case for 24 eur, so I don't expect something premium...

FWIW I did the water test on the platinum/best buy bourbon. Water soaked in ~ 5 mins.
Coloring is very uniform across high tension marks and pores. Buttery silky texture. I'm fairly confident there is protective coating but I'm no expert.
Also guessing it will patina, but slowly, which is fine with me.

Fit and finish is great. If you don't care about magsafe it's worth a look.

Feel like yall are missing the point on the term "genuine leather." There is this persistent myth that won't seem to die, that the term "genuine leather" is somehow synonymous with low-tier or poor quality leather. This is simply not the case and you can read the link I posted earlier for more info. But in short the term has come to mean basically nothing, since it can refer to low-quality bonded leather or top quality full-grain leather and everything in between. It is a meaningless term and cannot be used to extrapolate leather quality.

I don't know the quality of the leather on the ESR case but if they're saying it is top-grain leather, there is no good reason to doubt that. It would be a pretty egregious and easy to prove lie if that's not the case.

I’m saying the esr is nice and all and a great alternative to the apple leather cases but the fact is that the leather is the typical “genuine leather” meaning it’s a split and finished product using a coating which will never patina the way everyone enjoys. The coating will never wear from the simulated pressed grain.

Earlier in the thread, there was some discussion about the iPhone 12 cases, and that newer production runs of those cases were better than the originals. On the box of the cases is listed the manufacture date (month/year). At what month were the updated models manufactured?

I just picked up a black 12 mini case from Best Buy for $20, but it was manufactured 10/2020, and has more of a rubbery smell than leather, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to try to get one from a later date.

I've never even seen the ESR case so I wouldn't know, but what are you basing this off of? From your earlier comments it seems like it's based off the phrase "genuine leather" being used and I'm pointing out that doesn't mean anything. And anyway they are describing the material as "top grain leather" on their site so that implies they are not using a split grain leather.

I’m saying that I have the esr case in my hands and confirming its not top grain. It’s thickly painted after an artificial grain is pressed in. It will never patina correctly.

Alright bought my cases for the next few months. only other ones I’m waiting for are the bull strap elite. And hopefully a mocha brown or another product red from apple. Onto the wallets!

with that said

brown- all buttons good

deep cherry - power button good, volume buttons hard

green - power button hard, volume buttons good

black - all buttons hard

anyone got any remedy’s besides wiggling buttons back and forth lol

Well I won't make conclusions since I haven't seen it myself. But it would be a pretty egregious lie to say "top grain" on their site and then just straight up not use that. I'm looking at the pictures you posted and it really just looks like tumbled top grain leather to me.

I put some Bickmore’s Neatsfoot oil on my Golden Brown leather case. It’s much more soft and supple yet has a bit more grip to it. It moisturizes and says is good for water protection too. Leather folks love this stuff.

The coating on the leather that Apple put on prevents it from getting darker. Normally Neatsfoot would darken this right up. I don’t mind though as I like this color. Anyhow, I noticed it doesnt get blue jeans debris on it anymore since I applied the Neatsfoot oil.

Are those apple logo stickers? Where did you get them?

Had the Sequoia Green leather case for my 13P. Was really excited, as I think hunter green colors pair well with the brown leather wallet from Apple.

Two main complaints:

1. The green is almost comically green. Maybe I just got used to the 12P Cypress Green, and even the 11P green (loved that - true hunter greens), or maybe its because the green felt "sprayed on" - like the brightness of it made the leather look cheap. But yeah, unless this thing patinas like hell, it just looks a bit cheap. Caveat: if you keep the brown leather wallet on all the time, it definitely helps, but damn...just miss the Cypress Green from last years lineup (silicone only, though).

2. Its already not holding up as well as pre-12 leather cases...a week in and it already is turning black/dirty. Corners chipping away. A real shame, as I was hoping Apple would take the negative feedback on their new "leather" and make changes. Guess not.

Normally I would go the Bullstrap route here, but I don't think their 13 lineup is out. Mujjo (with MagSafe) isn't out yet either, at least not until November here in Spain. Never liked the "siding" on Nomad cases.

So...for the first time ever...biting the bullet on the ESR leather (brown) case. I admit ESR always looked a bit cheap to me, as they always pop up on Amazon as the advertised alternatives, especially for iPad cases...but the pics here make me feel like its a purchase worth shooting for, especially considering the low pricing.

NOW...if only I could find a rugged case for my iPad mini 6 ;) Or a leather one. Ill take anything at this point (minus Apples overpriced "smart" folio!).
Do you have any pictures of the discoloration on the Sequoia Leather? I would have thought this color wouldn't have been bad with wear over time but maybe the Midnight is the way to go this time around.

So it looks like at this point in time there are no cases currently available that fit like the apple cases have MagSafe and using real i coated leather. Not that I can find anyway.

Looks like the closest we get is the platinum case from Best Buy but it has no MagSafe according to some users here and has that dumb logo embossed into the back.

any pics?
I'm thinking of applying RedWing mink oil on the "golden" brown cover
I’ll grab my wife’s phone later to take a pic. It looks the same it just feels much better now. The Neatsfoot oil made the leather feel more rich and supple with a nice grip the way good leather does.

Ya, I conditioned my case with Bickmore No. 4 (a leather conditioner), and it turned out similarly. The leather actually takes the conditioner, so while there is a protective coating there, it’s not totally impenetrable. Already got a minor ding on one of the edges and it removed a tiny flap of the top grain layer, and the scratched area has since darkened and is hardly noticeable without looking for it. Underneath the top layer was similarly dyed dark cherry leather, so the leather isn’t simply painted.

The other thing I’ve noticed is how prevalent the grain is on this year’s case. Mine has several distinct wrinkles on the back and even a few scars/pock marks, which are naturally present on the top layer of the hide. If the grain is corrected, it’s only very slight, as these naturally occurring blemishes are still there and add a lot of character to the leather.

Finally, the sides have gotten nice and grippy and are picking up a shine, consistent with where I hold the case.
