So true! I just opened my new leather case last night, and holy cow- it smells like plastic, like one of those PU cases. It's a nice case, but if the package didn't say it is genuine leather, I would swear there is no natural leather on this case.
I noticed the same when I first opened my Apple Leather 12 mini case. No leather smell and smelled like plastic. After using it a while, I noted it didn’t smell nearly as strong, and did have a slight leather smell. I then received my grams28 case which smelled like leather should. I put my Apple case back in the original box while I was using my grams28. I recently pulled the Apple case back out and it smelled of plastic again. I think it is partly due to that styrofoam-ish piece that holds the case in the box. I think that is leaching smell to the Apple case.

Do you like the Apple case, planning to keep it?

Yeah, I’ll keep it, it was on sale for $20 at Best Buy. It’s the black case, which is ok, I’d rather have the Saddle Brown or the Red, but those still seem to be $60 everywhere.

Check the Verzion online for sale for $20

Took 2 days for Bullstrap to finally cancel the order. Andar is going to arrive tomorrow and was half the price (after the shipping/options I chose).

That said, my Green Apple Leather case for my 13PM is holding up really... really well - better than last year's 12 Pro Max. It shows no signs of any patina tho - and thankfully no wearing. I've dropped the case and it has held up extremely well (didn't rip the thin leather).

I think the Andar and Apple Green will be the cases I use till the next phone.

So the new leather cases are kinda patina proof?

Well I've never gotten the saddle brown ones but Apple Leather cases for the last 2-3 generations have had a heavy wax coating that, for me anyway, has resulted in the case not changing at all. But I usually get black/dark colors so I'm probably not a good person to talk to about patina and Apple leather cases.

I might be cancelling my BullStrap order tired of waiting for a tracking for a case that is probably stuck in a container somewhere, but before I do that what is everyone’s take on this Barlow Full Leather case? Seems like they are using metal buttons

Which case shows the most significant patina? Nomad, Bullstrap, Decoded?

Most obvious thing with Nomad is that the leather is very soft and impressionable. Picks up a lot of marks and bruises from finger nails and minor bumps. Personally I like mine a lot but it’s not my daily driver because it’s relatively heavy and bulky. Bullstrap on its way to me now but I will keep the Nomad for those occasions where I really need rugged protection.

You might search in the thread but I think I remember reading the build quality and fit and finish on the Barlow misses the mark. Maybe some others can verify who have had one before.

Why is so hard to make a decent quality leather case ? What are top 3 leather cases ? And why costs as pair of shoes with 1/20 amount of leather ?

There is a lot more to a high quality leather phone case than most realise. Aside from the cost of the raw materials and treatments, they demand precision engineering and highly repeatable manufacturing processes. No mean feat with a flexible organic material ?

I am sick of it now. I ruined my second iPhone 12 Apple saddle brown case with a forced patina attempt (I know it is me who is to blame in the end but anyway). I now ordered the Decoded case and hope for some kind of natural patina without any treatment. Let’s see if the apple wallet in saddle brown matches the brown Decoded case.

Swoon. Pacific Blue 12 Pro and Bourbon Bullstrap is a thing of beauty. Case is very slippery out of the box but I expect this will change. Leather is on a different planet to Apple’s half-hearted effort. No pics as I have nothing else with which to photograph the colour combo ?

Picking up a new 13 mini today and will be using my Torro leather sleeve I purchased for my 12 mini until I can decide on a leather case. I think I’ll try Saddleback this time around.
@AppleRobert, are you still using a sleeve on your 13 mini?

Unfortunately the iPhone 13 Decoded Chocolate Brown case doesn't seem to patina very much. At least not like I'm used to from other cases. The brown color is very uniform and scratches aren't lighter in color, if that makes sense. Here's some photos of mine after 25 days.

I think it looks great. It's already so dark that you probably won't see the change until later on. Seems like the bottom corner is showing a little more than the rest but that could be lighting.
