I spoke to someone with Ryan London and they agreed and said that that this case wasn’t meeting their quality standards and offered to send me a closed-bottom case which they said would provide a more quality fit.

It sounds like they may have been rushing to get this open-bottom model out as soon as they could.

Even the leather quality didn't feel as nice as their older open-bottom cases. It definitely felt rougher and dryer.

I took them up on their offer and we’ll see how the closed-bottom RL case is.
Thanks for the tip. I just emailed them as well so we’ll see what they say. I agree the leather texture was also not great on mine. I have never had a Ryan London but I was really surprised the leather didn’t feel nicer since many here sing the praises of the quality of their cases.

What would you say is the best?
Nomad?
From my experience and strictly in terms of leather quality, definitely Nomad Horween (their ECCO version is not nearly as good), Bullstrap or Ryan London in that order. I’ve heard some really good things about the quality of Bluebonnet and Tekmomo, but haven’t tried those out myself.
The Andar Aspen is pretty similar to the Ryan London closed-bottom case and the Nomad Traditional case, but their leather and overall feel and dimensions of the case is below the others.

Received my RL open bottom black case over the weekend.

The good: looks great with my deep blue 17 Pro; camera button function sf very nice (can't believe some cases have only a cutout); decent quality leather

The meh: camera cutout not perfect (no gaps but the bottom lens just touches the cutout; this doesn't bother me surprisingly); the other metal buttons stick out a bit farther than with other cases.

The ugly: as seemingly everyone else is experiencing, the depth is uneven from top to the bottom. it does seem like the bottom lip may not be deep enough to prevent contact when face down. however, it's more the overall aesthetic of the that offends my OCD.

Magsafe strength actually seems fine on my case.

With shipping (I'm in the US), there's little point in returning it. However, if it was free returns it would already be headed back. I'll hang onto it, but I'll be keeping my eye peeled for Lucky Coin to release their open bottomed variant.

I wish Apple still made leather cases!

Day 1 vs day 30 with the Olde Dublin. I like how it's getting lighter.

I got your patina right here…

Nomad CXL folio for my XS -- purchased Summer '21 and now going into retirement with the phone.

I have their case for my iPad as well, and it has also been great.

But the phone case is even greater because I bought it for $4.95 on clearance sale. The $9.95 shipping charge was double the case!

What fell short for me were the poor (integrated) button action (seemingly rectified in their newer cases) and lack of sleep/wake magnets in the cover. I had another folio case with them, which was very handy and no issues, but some experience interference with the compass or haptic motor in their presence.

The leather adjacent to the fold didn't start to peel until later in its tenure, but given the stress it's under, acceptable. Otherwise, I've found Nomad cases don't delaminate.

I'm going to order a successor for my 17P before the BF sale is over, and take a chance on the ECCO version. As much as I like CXL and its intoxicating smell, I'm trying to be practical and $87+tax for a phone case, no matter how nice, is pushing it beyond where I want to go. Almost bit on the limited #8 color during the deal of the day, when the discount was 30% instead of 20%, but the extra $10 upcharge for the special color was another turnoff.

Agree with this. Bluebonnet is spectacular and Tekmomo is probably the best quality to value ratio. It’s far better than it has any business being.

Outside of the shipping issues, Bluebonnet is such a solid case. The initial slippery feeling has worn off and it feels great to hold. Camera control button is solid, no wiggles. It also has a cool scar on it as well.

Can I justify £61 on one though, loving the Air caseless so not sure if I would even use it. First world problems I guess.
I feel the same way. I’m managing to resist the Bluebonnet but would probably succumb to the Andar purple case if it were made available for the Air.

So what is peoples favorite case this year who have tried many? The BlueBonnet?
So far I have had an Andar in navy, LC (returned - mine had a defect), Bullstrap in sienna and terra, and RL open bottom in saddle brown. I currently have the RL open bottom on my phone even though it definitely has some issues like the almost non-existent lip at the bottom of the screen. I like the leather's reddish tone on theirs and the fact that is is veg tanned.

I'll probably keep the RL on for now, but rotate the rest occasionally. I'll probably use the Andar the least only because of the metal camera surround. I would've bought the BlueBonnet instead of the RL, but couldn't do it after the stories on here about them not communicating about the shipping delays.

It is actually pretty crazy the amount of choices we have for good leather cases now a days. My personal favorite case this year is probably the Bullstrap of all the cases I own when looking at the whole package. The RL open bottom would've uprooted that if it didn't have the fitment issues with the screen lip being so much smaller on the bottom.

RL customer service was very friendly in answering questions about my open bottom case. They did offer it to exchange it with their closed bottom case. However, they said "We understand your concern about the clearance at the bottom of the case, especially when placing your phone face down. While the design is intentional to allow for easy access to the phone's features, we recognise that it may take some time to get used to, particularly if you're accustomed to cases with a more uniform depth.". They also suggested I use a screen protector. 😂

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt as they have always been great in the past. However, to suggest they intended the phones to sit uneven in the case is crazy to me, and suggesting I use a screen protector if I am concerned about it is just... Just admit the design or production run was flawed and make it right.

The case is good otherwise, but overall I'm disappointed in the case at this price point.

I wish Bluebonnet had options beyond the one color. The search continues...

I got my Ryan London open-bottom case today (for a 17 Pro). It's . . . fine. Feels similar to the Apple leather case I had on my 14 Pro. It doesn't have any smell - disappointing, but it's not like that lasts forever anyway. I am not too OCD about these things, and probably would not have noticed that there's less clearance/safe space at the bottom of the case than the top if it had not been mentioned here. Or maybe mine is better than some others; the front of my phone does not quite touch the surface of a table, etc, if I put it face down. I'm going to stick with it. I wanted an open bottom case, and there aren't a lot of choices anyway.

I have just received my open botton Wiiuka for my iphone pro max after being disappointed with my open bottom RL. Must say im very pleased with it, leather is of lovely quality and it’s a much better fit all round with a great magsafe magnet. I’m finished for this year now. 😊

Satchel & Page have their leather cases for all 17 models available now.

Edit - No camera control button is a massive fail.

I got the email last night. It’s tempting to see how their quality and fit stacks up against the others. Are you planning on picking one up?
