I agree this looks ridiculous and I'm trying to play 'devil's advocate' and find a way this can be practical for anybody. Maybe for someone who DOES use their phone too much and wants to find a way to help limit their own usage? "Ugh...I guess I dont NEED to check Facebook right now, I don't want to pull my phone out of it's sleeve."

Thats all I got, folks.

Nope, no matter how many times I see a picture of this sleeve, I have no idea what the thinking behind it is, or who is possibly going to buy it.

its mainly for Sheiks, they would have it hanging from the torlafala and would have the adjunct pull it out for the Sheik when the phone ring. That is a special high touch market in Saudi Arabia.

No. Sadly for $130, it’s not that cool.
several reviewer‘s were asked that question, and the answer was, nope. You have to tap the screen to get the time to show up, and even then, the entire screen lights up. It’s not put in any type of special time only mode, it’s literally just your normal lock screen.
This is what kills it for me. Although I’ve never been much of a fan of sleeves (since I grab my phone so often), I thought I’d give it a go if it meant having an Alway On Display.

I don’t understand why they didn’t include one though… the sleeve has an NFC chip in it; that’s how the phone knows what color to make the time and background. Instead of that, why not have no background and just show the time? It seems simple.

Too bad the iPhone doesn’t have AoD. I’m not really sure why that is. They’ve been using OLED for 4 generations of iPhone. Would have been nice with that case.

That’s exactly what it does in that window. The MagSafe NFC chip in the sleeve tells the iPhone to display the clock which dims but is always shown.

I’ve never used a case on my phone because I like to enjoy its design as it was intended.

Meanwhile, I’m increasingly replacing my iPhone with an LTE Apple Watch which I use to check the time, view notifications, play music and interact with Siri. So my iPhone stays in my pocket for longer periods of time. Something like this makes sense since I’m not constantly pulling out my phone every 2 minutes.

I’m not particularly impressed with how it looks but I do see the point of a sleeve.
I’m jealous! There are people out there that can use an iPhone without a case and never drop it (my father, for instance), and I wish I were one of them! I take it out of the case every now and then to enjoy the feel of it and the design when I’m at home, but have to put it back on when I walk my dogs

Jesus Christ on the cross, this is like watching a group of men talking about how stupid and useless bras are, or a group of teenagers in a Tiffany & Co. store complaining about pricing! If you don’t understand, then it’s not intended for you! If it’s above your price point, then it’s not intended for you! That huge ass Pro Max is both above my price point and so large that I can’t understand anyone but Andre the Giant wanting it, but I’m not on here calling it stupid... aye aye aye

I’m a millennial, and I used a leather pouch for my iPhone 4 for a couple years - and liked it. The primary driver was being able to use the phone naked. Definitely had to get used to pulling it out and putting it back in all the time, but I loved how it completely protected the screen when it was stored, and how I could enjoy the iPhone’s form factor (a nice design change from the 3 series) while using it.

The thing that dissuades me from going with Apple’s sleeve now is mostly the price (I bought a Sena leather sleeve for $35), and the apparent design miss of lighting up the entire screen to show the time in the window, instead of only activating the pixels in the window. Lastly, I wouldn’t be using the strap or card insert, both of which likely constitute a notable part of the retail cost.

Admittedly, part of what makes sleeves work for me is that the Apple Watch now takes care of most of my notifications.

At the end of the day the sleeve can definitely be an unforgiving but purposeful and unique compromise. I do have another slim case for when I’m using the phone with tripods or other constant photography work, and yet another somewhat ridiculous ruggedized case for when I’m working on towers.

After covering up my X for three years with a leather case, and having black/slate iPhones since the 3GS, I’m really enjoying seeing my Pacific Blue Pro every time I use it, and feeling the edge of the glass and stainless steel (instead of a case lip) when swiping is awesome.

Gorgeous phone.

I used a leather sleeve with card holder for many years, through several iterations of iPhone (iPhone 4 to 6S): http://www.ikonic-edge.com/
This was the best I found. I really liked how the phone was protected in my pocket or bag, and that when I was using it, it was caseless (looking and feeling better because of it). I’m not sure why I stopped using one (iPhone 7 on), I think it’s because I started using a micro wallet for my cards and apples silicon case felt nice. However, as phones got bigger, the silicon case added too much bulk, so now I use a slim case with my 12 Pro: Tozo ultra thin hard case, which doesn’t add much bulk and feels ok. Considering going caseless again.. or maybe a sleeve.. now I’m confused 🤷‍♂️
THIS! I have bought many of their sleeves for protection with a naked iPhone - super nice quality!

Apple often leaves tiny clues in their products and accessories that hint at how they envision their products being used.

For example, I am reminded of that ipad leather sleeve that came with a separate cutout for the Apple Pencil. I interpreted it as Apple’s way of saying that when not in use, the Apple Pencil ought to be held stationary to avoid excessive battery drain. That’s also probably why Apple didn’t release an ipad case back then with an integrated pencil holder, because they knew that doing so would only accelerate the rate at which it consumed battery.

It’s less of an issue with the 2018 iPad Pro because it’s constantly charging the pencil, so you will never be caught dead in a scenario where you want to use the pencil but it’s dead.

I don’t yet know who the target audience for this is, but I don’t think that Apple is as clueless as everyone is making them out to be.

People really should be spending more time trying to explain Apple, not explain Apple away.

That’s some wonderful assuming interlude for saying: don’t criticise them they know what they’re doing.

I agree. I mean, sure, there may be some puzzling design choices (see Magic Mouse charging port location, G4 Cube vent locations, et al), but it’s not like the decisions were made in a vacuum by a team of monkeys. Design analysis can be fun.

So... the display stays on (just the pixels needed to display the time) and displays the time when in the sleeve? If so, why can’t Apple enable that functionality without buying a sleeve?

yeah, like "always on" feature on other non iOS phones
