If I want to add external soundbar to the X1E that has Dolby Atmos, is it better to also use soundbar that is compatibility with Dolby Atmos?
Sure, why not take advantage of Dolby Atmos if you can?

What do you think of this product? Users seem to like it. I don’t think it has Dolby Atmos but it seems to be able to achieve similar effects.

If we put X1E on mstand so that the speakers don’t get close to the table, will the sound effect be better if I add the katana or Dolby Atmos speakers?
I don't know. I never really thought about a soundbar for a laptop as soundbars go, that is a very low price. It does seem to get good reviews, but the dings on it from a review I just read was that the Subwoofer can't keep up at higher volumes and Audio doesn't sound as wide or directional as 2+ discreet speakers.
I guess it would depend on what kind of volume you are looking for and how much separation is enough.
I use it in a small bedroom. I cannot turn it in so loud as my neighbors will complain.
Sounds like you would never push it to the point where you notice the shortcoming of the subwoofer then. Your neighbor will probably be pounding on your door before you do![]()
Do you recommend getting the Katana which is not really Atmos soundbar, a more expensive sony/samsung soundbar or an Atmos compatible headphone. One problem is headphone is that having sound source very close to the hears may cause damage in the ear.

Hi, do other X1E users here still have jet engine like noisy fan issue? It has been about 10 days since I got the machine. I updated the BIOS to 1.12 and updated all the drivers via Lenovo Vintage. I still need more testings but it seems to me that I get very noisy fan more often when connecting the X1E to a 4K TV.
Case 1: Just for today, I had the laptop not connecting to the 4K TV most of the time. Jet engine like noisy fan happened once when I rebooted the machine, once when I was surfing the web (no video on the site), once when I was watching youtube and once idling. Is this normal?
Case 2: However, for four times, after I connected the laptop to the 4K TV (either via HDMI 2.0 or USB-C to HDMI adapter), even without playing youtube video or doing anything, within about 15-20 seconds, I heard jet engine-like noisy fan. It took about two minutes for the laptop to become silent again. I have five tabs open under MS Edge. I just clicked on the tabs and within a minute, jet engine like noisy fan started again. In the next test, after the laptop became silent. Even without doing anything, it suddenly became very noisy again. This dos not look normal to me.
Anybody know of a way to fix this issue? Thanks.
What solution did he post?Apple and Lenovo took different approaches to cooling their laptops. Apple opted to run a bit hotter with the trade-off being a quieter laptop. Lenovo chose to be more aggressive with the cooling, but at the cost of being more noisy.
There are a couple solutions to this. One I believe you will find that if you move the power slider from Best Performance to Better Performance, you will hear a lot less fan and the CPU will still ramp up when it is needed.
Second you could download a fan controller app such as Speed Fan, Notebook Fan Control, Argus Monitor, TPFan Control or the like. Speed Fan is the most advanced of the set, but in some ways also the most annoying since it constantly asks for Admin permissions. But you can monitor temps, set min and max fans speeds and set a cooling scheme that works better for you.
I personally don’t find the fans offensive, certainly quiet compared to what I have heard from Razer Blade. MacBook Pro fans, once you get them maxed are pretty high pitched and annoying as well. But I used the better performance slider most of the time and it works ok for me. You may wish to tweet it further to work for you.
If you really want a laptop with better cooling and less fan noise, the solution @Queen6 chose is ultimately the better route.
What solution did he post?
They are heavier and actually louder. How are they quieter?Who? @Queen6 ? He went a different route with the full-size gaming laptop for business use that will run fast and quite all day without the ultrabook type fan noise you get from the MBP/X1E and other thin and lights.

Thanks. Do you have the issue I mentioned? I wonder how many X1E users are affected.
The problem is that even I set the performance to the left-most (best battery setting), I still have this issue.
Among the fan controller app you mention, is there a good set of parameters that I should follow? Will I damage the laptop if I made a mistake in setting the values incorrectly?
They are heavier and actually louder. How are they quieter?
I don't know that I do. I mean the fans come on earlier and faster than they did with the 2018 MacBook Pro, but they aren't on constantly or anything. But I haven't attempted to connect it to a 4K TV either.
That has not been my experience. Heavier, absolutely. Thicker, absolutely. But they have run cooler due to the larger chasis and move more air more quietly and efficiently, due to the larger fans and better heat pipes, making them overall quieter. But YMMV depending on the laptop.
Sorry I forgot to mention in Post #259 that those rare noisy fan issues described in Case 1 happened within about 5 hours. So, not very often. However, once I connected the laptop to the 4K TV, noisy fan happened every few minutes. That is too often to be acceptable.
I will try to connect mine to a 4K TV tomorrow and see what result I get. You have the power slider all the way to the better battery mode when you connect it? Or did I misunderstand that?
[doublepost=1540088096][/doublepost]Actually, just now hooked it to my 4K TV. The fan is running a bit in Best Performance Mode. Nothing too annoying. Certainly, nothing I would describe as even remotely close to "jet engine."
Ran a 4K movie for a while. Same. Steady fan noise, but no different than the MBP when connected to the TV. Obviously, I can't hear yours, but if you opted for in-home service, you could always get a tech to come out and listen and see if the amount of fan noise is unusual.
Thanks. Yes, power slider all the way to better battery mode. Strangely speaking when it became noisy, sometimes moving it to highest performance lowered the fan noise!

3kg.. Some desktops custom builds are around that weight lol you may as well use a desktop tbh17.3" i7 8750H, 32Gb @ 2666, 1070 GTX, NVME SSD & SSHD, sub 3Kg. Has silent mode and even under load not offensive. The Silent mode (TDP down) allows the notebook to be completely silent under basic productivity tasks, even then it's still a very powerful solution. Literally at the push of a button you can flip it to this...

What are the temps? The fans are on for a reason, whileI can empathize, because the Razer had an aggressive fan setup and I preferred a quieter machine. they were running for a reason, i.e., cooling the laptop. I found even with my MBP, that using an external monitor, the temps increase. Can I have some kind of silent mode through software in X1 Extreme. Everything on this machine is fine except for the noisy fan (especially when connected to 4K TV).

If you set the cooling to passive in the power setting and the fans are still on, then the temps may be too high for passive cooling.
