Which SSD do you recommend as the secondary internal SSD for this laptop? How about external backup SSD?

That depends on what you are looking for in a secondary internal SSD. Raid? No Raid? Equivalent size to the primary? Equivalent performance? An upgrade in both?

The OEM drive is likely a Samsung PM981

I really like the Samsung T5 External

How about external backup SSD?
If you're looking to backup your computer, I would recommend buying a spinning hard drive, why pay the premium price for an SSD when you won't need the speed.

If you do opt for same as the original for future raid use, you will need to pop the back panel off and verify the part number/manufacturer of the original. While it appears that the majority are Samsung from reports I have read, Lenovo does use one or more manufacturers, depending on SSD size. There are at least 3 for the 512 SSD.

Removing the back cover is easy to do. 7 Phillips safety screws (the kind that do not come completely out) and no clips. Lenovo doesn’t use pentalobe screws or wax or any means to discourage / indicate if you opened it. Unlike Apple.

Because travelling with a spinning hdd is proned for damage vs ssd.

I have 2tb external spinner that I use solely for backup. 2+ years of traveling, mistreatments and general abuse didn't do anything to it. SSD just for backup is a waste of money and a waste of SSD. Unless you are a video editor and need fast access to your library, there really isn't a need for SSD as a backup.

I keep on reading this and wondering – doesn't it void the warranty?

For internal use, I plan to install Linux on the 2nd SSD. Can’t decide between 960/970 Evo/Pro. No plan for raid at this time. I can only find PM981 through a 3rd party seller in Amazon. Not knowing the seller, better stay away. Any advantage in getting a PM981 rather than Evo/ Pro?

Does the T5 work well under Windows and Linux?

The reason I chose SSD is that in the past, there have been failure of several hard disks. Are HD more reliable these days than 10 years ago? How reliable are they?

I've had countless spinner hdd fail on me. Ssd are more reliable which is my point

They are not reliable especially for travelling where it can get some knocks and bumps

No, removing the back cover will not void warranty. The only time your warranty will be voided is if there is evidence of CID (Customer Induced Damage).

Lenovo even provides a number of CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit) parts that can be removed and replaced by the customer and FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) parts that “can be purchased and replaced by yourself or a Lenovo qualified field support person.” However they do recommend that if you are under warranty that you follow warranty procedure for FRU.

SSD’s and RAM for example are classed Tier 1 CRU, which means they are easily replaceable by the customer and require few or no tools.

But the failed HD were staying at home all the time so they were not subject to knocks. They just suddenly produced strange scratching sounds and failed.

If really important data SSD period. I do have a HDD that travels with me, however it's a rugged drive that capable of dealing with more abuse than the normal HDD's, equally twice the thickness and weight of a standard 2-1/2" HDD.

HDD's are mechanical the more you work them, the more they are exposed to shock the sooner they fail...

Yup spot on!

Do you expect big drop in price of Samsung T5 1TB in Black Friday?

For internal SSD, the one I have is from Samsung. Is Samsung 970 EVO M.2 the best choice?

Samsung T5 1TB in Black Friday?
I hope so, but so far I see it in Amazon for 227 so if it does go down on black friday, we may only see a price of 199 - just my guess

Samsung 970 Pro is faster than the Evo, but the question is whether or not the speed difference is important enough to you to warrant the price increase

Yes, also not sure if the motherboard can take advantage of the Pro.

If I want to add external soundbar to the X1E that has Dolby Atmos, is it better to also use soundbar that is compatibility with Dolby Atmos?
