Yes, or the 20x0 cards. My question how is the thermal of these new cards compared with the 1050Ti Max-Q? If they generate more heat, then we expect noisy machine again.

Unless one wants to buy at a discount, is it better to wait for about a week to see how it goes? Is it true that things will get more expensive from Jan 1 due to the traiffs?

The 20x is going to be significant for those that can take advantage of the hardware, as for the thermal's I'll follow those that deliver, versus those that just talk about it and fail miserably...

which one will delivery on the same form factor as this x1 extreme laptop?

How come Lenovo increased the base price of the high end model of X1E? Is it because of the traiffs between China and the USA?

The one I ordered on Boxing Day has finally arrived. Given that CES is just a few days from today, I wonder if I should refrain from opening the box and see what new Thinkpads are going to be announced.

What are the specs and how much did you pay for it?

At CES if they come out with something way better I’ll just send it back or keep it. Don’t need anything really fancy or a very high-end GPU from my needs. Don’t know how they could improve on this any better if you ask me, with the exception of a new GPU.

I just re-ordered my X1 today with a 20% off with the below specs. Arrives towards the 22nd of Jan.

X1 Extreme 15.6 $ 2,188.42 tax incl. Sale
Windows Pro 64
CPU i7-8750H
DDR-4 32Gb 2666 Mhz
256 Gb SSD
4K UHD HDR 400 nits
3 yr warranty
1050 Ti 4 Gb GPU

What I meant is that before any discount and warranty, the base price has been increased by about $100.
Just the maxed model (8850H, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD). Before I ordered, the agent told me that it is in stock and I would get it in the middle of the following week. He suggested me to try it (rather than to get an i5 configuration which has a long wait period) as his does not have noisy fan issue. However, they delayed shipping it to me and the shipment was also delayed.

Understood. They delayed my last purchase so I canceled it and was hoping for a better deal. Got one but it was not that great of a deal, darn it. Good luck with yours

Have you removed the mesh at the bottom of the case to check how silent the X1E became without the mesh? Some people recommended doing that but they cannot show the effectiveness of this method.

Mine has arrived.
Turned it on, everything works. Shut down, upgraded RAM to 32gb, populated other m2 slot with 1tb nvme, installed pop_os, and now I'm downloading everything I need. First on win10, then on pop_os. Dual boot.

Everything is as expected, excellent build quality, but will have to check the screen later on, since it's a FHD version.

Too early to say anything really, I will write more in a few days.

If anybody is in the know, does Lenovo with the X1 extreme, build these to order by chance? Just wondering if they have the latest bios and Windows update. No biggie just want to know.

I would recommend not doing that, as removing that could void your warranty and its there for a reason.

In reddit, things that they recommend to do upon arrival of the machine are: removal of the mesh to get rid of the crazy jet engine noise (don't know the effect as nobody posts a video nor sound file showing pre and post removal of the mesh), do thermal re-paste, undervolt, apply fan control apps, etc.

Four more days to wait. It is tempting to open the box.

Continuing to use the trackpad of my MBP 2010 causes pain in my thumb joint again.

The mesh is a filter, removing it will only serve to allow more dust to penetrate the system. Heatsync will loose efficency faster and you'll have a noisier notebook in the long run

Better to manage the thermals, power profiles and fans if possible. Use ThrottleStop and create a profile with reduced TDP and or CPU frequency.

While the re-paste, undervolt, fan control stuff makes sense and won't void your warranty as long as you don't screw it up, removing the mesh filter makes none.

a) you will likely void your warranty be removing it. As @Queen6 mentions, it is a filter and there for a reason
b) There is probably a good reason nobody posts a video or sound file pre and post removal. It isn't the mesh that is noisy it is the fans and they make noise for a reason.

do thermal re-paste
Repasting can be helpful, but I would recommend this only if you've had experience in working on computers. The results are not magical, or miraculous. You may save yourself 5c maybe a little more but that's about it.

Agreed in probably 99% of cases. Once in a while, you do hear of a unit where there was a bad paste job out of the factory, but I am guessing those are in the 1% of all units. Most are probably adequate but could be improved upon for a slight improvement.

Repasting I've always found to be a mixed bag and generally doesn't bring earthshattering results. The other factor is you need to be willing to do it every few years. The OEM paste may not be the best, however it's designed to last for longer periods of time.

I think many see big gains as they have cleaned out the cooling system in the process of repasting, rather than the thermal paste. Notebooks are far more complex thermally the TIM being only a single factor, IMHO 5C at best, more with LM equally that brings it's own complications :)

Yeah, not much to gain from removing that noisy mesh I am sure hahaha :)

I guess that is why some people just talk but do not want to post audio files to prove its effectiveness.

Hope Lenovo could come up with a new design this year. They should also have a configuration with a 4-core CPU.

Doesn't seem that much different

If you're that worried/disturbed by the fans/noise, then the X1E may not be the right laptop for you

Yes. Honestly speaking, I think the one with the mesh removed sounds worse. Hope they can come up with a better cooling solution this year. I guess I just don't open the box and return it to them.
[doublepost=1546636364][/doublepost]Now that I have decided to build a powerful workstation to supplement a laptop, I don't need Nvidia GPU nor a 6-core CPU in the laptop. Just a lightweight (below 1.8kg) one with 15" 4K (or similar resolutions) laptop is good enough. One with only iGPU is fine. Of course, if it could be turned to a tablet, that would be even better. Hope something like that will be released in a few weeks.

I didn't think the cooling solution was ineffectual, its just a bit loud for some

Unless they decide to water cool it, I am not sure you will find a more silent solution on the X1E. The cooling system overall does its job and the machine runs well.

By far the vast majority of notebook's with the current hex core CPU's & dGPU is going to run it's fans under light loads. My own 17.3"has a TDP down feature which work's well enough

Both CPU & GPU fans at zero RPM, with the notebook running numerous basic productivity tasks and copying around 1Tb of data in the background, equally expecting it to remain silent, just no :p

Lenovo has another better deal out for the X1 Extreme. Now it’s $2235 for the same( $2381.00) specs that I purchased initially. I just canceled my old order and re-ordered. ;). Glad they didn’t send my previous out just yet

They take an additional 10% off the discounts but it is up to Jan 7, the day before CES! I would be happier if they could extend it after their announcement of 2019 Thinkpads.
