Assign ringtones to groups and have the group ringtone assigned to a contact upon entry. Of course, that would require the capability to join the contact to a group, which it appears can only be done on the computer at this time.

ability to edit calendars in the event edit (as it is the specific calendar may only be assigned when making the entry the first time)

A way to search contacts by picture (I can picture her, but can't remember her name).

And there are some screwy assumptions in the way pictures are stored and accessed - a contact can have a picture, but the picture is not available except when editing the contact? I'm not sure how, but I'd like more flexibility there. I suppose I can sync it over to the computer, copy it to an album and update the album on the iPhone with another sync. Is there a better way?

In order of importance:

1. Ability to edit Word/Excel files on the go
2. Ability to email files, and download email from files
3. To Do sync
4. Notes sync

That's it. Every other limitation I can live with. Actually, I can live without #3 & 4, but #1 & 2 are a basic, needed function of the iPhone.

My theory on why there are little to no apps that allow the ability to edit Word/Excel files on the go:

There's no copy and paste. It's as simple as that. Until C&P comes to the iPhone, we won't see any worthwhile apps that do word/excel editing on the go.

Might as well list my "wish list":

1. Copy and Paste (see above)
2. MMS
3. Full bluetooth functionality
4. (This is also for iTunes) Better app organization tools
5. Allow app writers full access to the camera
6. Flash
7. Allow other video codecs

1 - 4: I rate as possible updates
5: I rate as kinda-sorta possible
6: I rate as "not likely," but not inconceivable
7: H*ll no, not going to happen.

In addition to the above, I'd like better Call Forwarding setup.

On my 4 year old phone, I could call up the address book from the CF setting and pick the number I wanted to CF to, instead of having to remember it and type it every time. Similarly, my old phone used to show me an icon to remind me that the phone was Call Forwarded.

I was stunned that the iPhone didn't have Voice dialling/ operation via a Bluetooth headset.

Oh, and how about a "shake to shuffle" settings option for music?

so far I'm missing the blinking led on my blackberry that would indicate a new email or SMS when u miss it and the phone screen is powered off. i realize that an LED is hardware but maybe there is a power efficient way of optionally enabling a simulated LED in a corner of the screen to serve this purpose?

Also wish double space were a period

Really very happy and fully expect updates that will continue to enhance the experience.

if i understand you correctly, double space is a period...

and about the LED thing, though i only have a Touch, the idea of a "flashing" blink on a portion of the screen is something that should be considered.

Stream radio in background, Flash player, Turn Edge OFF

1) Add radio streams to the iPod so it can stream in the background

2) Flash player in Safari

3) Turn Edge OFF... too often the iPhone switches back and forth between Edge and 3G when the Edge signal is just as low as the 3G signal.

There are some things missing....

1. Full landscape mode

It would be great if I could use Safari + Mail + Phone + SMS etc. all in landscape. There's no reason all the menu screen icons could swish round 90° as well...

2. Replace SMS/Email with Messaging app

I just wanted to send a friend the same info by SMS + Email incase he wasn't by his phone, it was fairly urgent. Currently I have to open up two seperate apps and type it out twice. Would be nice if I could just input his name, choose his email address AND his mobile number then send a short message....

3. LET ME FORWARD AN SMS!

3 times this week I've needed this. Pah.

That is all :)

Discuss?

if a message is extremely important you can "text" the person through the Mail app, there is an email address associated with (almost) all US mobile carriers. for example 1234567890@vtext.com would text a person with Verizon.

the only thing is when they get the message it comes from your email not your phone number, so they reply to the email.

sorry if that is a little confusing, i tried my best to explain it.

No.

Landscape mode is a necessary evil in programs like Safari. You have to have it, but it often leads to it switching when you don't want it to. I put up with it because, hey, what are you gonna do?

But to introduce this problem in other places where there's no reason for landscape mode? (Phone??? Really!?) No thanks. That's just creating problems for no reason.

 I can type far faster in landscape mode than I can on the horizontal keyboard. I jailbroke my phone just to get bloody landscape SMS because it's so much faster to type on...

how about have landscape in everything but an option to disable it for specific apps should you want to?

Apple will never do that, it makes too much sense ;)

im starting a petition to apple about killing the safari landscape mode. its simply non sense lets see come on when im going to bed i turn iphone qbout 47 degress and the view is switched to portait. also the other apps that dont use the landscape mode so whats the point please join me in my petition toghether we can fight apple madness seriously

( dont believe in gestures to trigger events ... besides its a phone wiyhout buttons better than a. blueberryimac for god\ sakeeee...

I'd like to see the abily to use Japanese emoji extended to MobileMe email. I have no use for my Softbank email account.

Could be. Maybe this is why Apple is holding off on c/p, to discourage people from developing a Mobile Word type of app. The reason why they would want to discourage this is because Apple may be developing their own Mobile iWork. They wouldn't want a 3rd party word processor app to beat them to the punch.

And, this leads me to ask; why hasn't Apple put out their own apps? They may be of higher quality and integrate better into the iPhone's OS.

Good point. I'm thinking perhaps Apple wanted to give 3rd party App developers some breathing room? In any case, I wouldn't be surprised if we see some Apple made apps this coming Macworld. Question is, what would they be?

Something I've wanted since I first got an iPod 2 1/2 years ago:

Ability to create and edit playlists (real playlists, not on-the-go or Genius lists) on the device itself, rather than having to always create and edit them in iTunes. My music is on the device, there's a keyboard on the device, the device has memory -- why are we still not able to do this??? The same thing goes for photo albums -- why can't I organize my pics on the iPhone rather than having all new pics go to the Camera Roll with no ability to create new albums? This seems like it would be so easy to implement and would be tremendously useful.

I personally want something like iWork. Yeah, it would be a little constrained, but certainly doable and likely better than anything we have right now.

I could see this. I have another idea (although I'm doubtful we'd ever see this). How about more "remote apps?" What I mean is... well, let me start this way: I've been using Jaadu a lot. Jaadu (for those who don't know) is a remote sharing desktop app for the iPhone. So, from anywhere I have Edge, 3G, or WiFi, I can control my home iMac (and Macbook Pro if necessary) just as if I were there at home controlling my Mac.

HOWEVER, often times I just need to do some basic stuff, now I realize much of this can be accomplished via an iPhone terminal app, but for most of us I'd prefer something more GUI-based. Here comes my idea: MORE REMOTE-TYPE APPS.

How about a Finder remote app? iPhoto remote app? So on and so forth. Get the idea?

Maybe it's just me, but these type of remote apps could be very lightweight, and much of the heavy lifting is done by the Mac (or PC) itself.

Thoughts?

volume control as camera shutter button

I want to be able to use the volume control as a camera shutter button.

I hate the stupid onscreen shutter button. There is no way to securely hold the camera steady and push the onscreen button at the same time. It's not like a regular camera where you can hold it with both hands and just slowly squeeeeze the button till it clicks. This would particularly help in low light situations where you need to hold the camera steady.

It's not like you need the volume control for anything else while you're in the camera app.

OK, I don't desperately want to use phone in landscape mode but I just don't like the way I'll be using one app like safari in landscape then switch to something else and be forced to have to switch to portrait... does anyone else find this annoying?

That would be really cool!
