You guys know the contact list has an alphabet bar on the side so you can search for names starting with that letter quickly, right?

Lots of good upgrade suggestions in this thread. I'd like to reiterate the following:

-One inbox for all e-mail accounts.
-Mass deletion
-Period & Comma on main keyboard
-Louder volume system-wide
-Ability to send multiple SMS
-Ability to add/edit contacts
-BCC field on e-mail

+ lots more!

TONES and CAM OPTIONS!

First let me tell you how much I love this thing! TO me its flawless but then again nothing is ever truly flawless... What I truly wish this thing had was a BLACK and WHITE photo option. I think B&W shots look soo much better and I wish it was an option. I also really wish it had the missed call, text, VM reminder. I also wish the thing could let me change tones for a VM and for a text.

Do you guys think that all of the above can be fixed with software updates?? Can software make the cam shoot B&W???

Biggest:

- ringtones (whether through iPhoto-style friendly cropping and fixing in iTunes, or on the phone itself like on new Treos)
- "one inbox to rule them all," at least as an option for combined email inbox
- BCC option on email compose
- email multiple selection for deletion, forwarding, marking as read, filing, etc
- landscape keyboard orientation in every app
- period and comma on keyboard
- better volume and speakerphone

Fix the Safari + iPod crash
Ability to find a contact by typing in name

And this is something that I am not sure people have thought off. I love how easy the alarm clock feature is to use, and the phone looks GREAT sitting on my nightstand in the dock charging. I would like there to be a way for me to turn some sort of "clock" mode on, so that when its sitting in the dock, it just displays the time and any messages/calls/appointments alerts, and a black background, that way it doesnt put out a lot of light, but sits on my stand as a clock at night, and I have my alarm clock set. Something cool also might be to have a small countdown timer appear on the bottom, which is a countdown to the actual alarm.

Oh and a week view for iCal, which would look GREAT in landscape view...

Unified email inbox

My biggest beef is having to navigate to 5 separate email accounts to see new emails. Mail.app has one Inbox... so should the iPhone.

Reverse ordering of downloaded messages

I have >1000 messages in some mailboxes on my IMAP account. When iPhone fetches them I can only see the 25 that were received first by date. I could like to see the most recently received ones but would have to press the button "Load 50 More Messages" twenty times for doing so.

It would be useful to be able to fetch only the recent 25/50/100 messages.

A today screen of sorts would be nice. Maybe as a scroll of your upcoming events or even a list on the unlock screen

I am also having problems surfing the web and listening to the iPod. It stops playing music and goes back to the iPod screen. Also noticed the crash when searching and playing with Google Maps

Allow Bluetooth serial port to connect and feed your location to Google Maps. My Treo was able to do that. If it can read location, why not be able to use Google Maps as a GPS?

I second the Mark all Read in the Email Client.

Landscape for SMS is seconded too.

I love this device!!!!!

I switched from my Blackberry 8700 to the iPhone and love the new user interface. However, some features I desperately miss.
1. I want voice activated dialing. A basic feature of most cell phones.
2. I want to be able to select a phone number on a text message and call it directly as well as forward text messages as email. This is important to me as when I'm on call at the hospital I receive my pages via text messages.
3. Web browsing is painfully slow using EDGE and Safari. The BB was able to browse without downloading images which made it much quicker and functional. Also I was able to email a link to the web page I was viewing to a friend; which is not possible on the iPhone. While I love quicktime, most websited with video (cnn, abc, etc) links are not compatible with the iPhone browser.
4. Cut, copy and paste would be nice as well as being able to delete emails and select them in bulk.

I really hope many of these features may be available in the future with a simple software update or third party software. Any opinions on if that's possible?

A News button on the home screen which divides into BBC News, ESPN (sports), and Weather.

Regardless, I have faith in Apple's future updates.

Weather

As it stands, if you have four weather pages, and you scroll from 1 to 4, once you reach 4, you have to scroll back to 1.

Would be better (IMHO) if once you reach 4, another stroke takes you all the way back to 1. That way it's one continuous loop instead of a linear line.

Here are some more;

Way to store passwords for Safari
More than 20 favorites in contacts
Option to leave backlight on when plugged in (for car use)
Select all

How will this list get the attention of Apple?

An organizational question: how do we make sure that this collection of great ideas for improvement gets the proper attention from Apple iPhone developers? Perhaps the Macrumor Admins can compile a complete list within a day or two and make it a title page story? Perhaps somebody knows influential people at Apple to make aware of it?

I would like to see louder volume for ring and speakerphone, as well as a stronger vibrate mode.

Also, there is no way to tell, unless you wake the ohone up, to tell if you have an SMS,e-mail, missed call, vm, etc. I would like to see a flashing LED to say, "Hey wake me up, you have a message."

Add an iChat client.

More ring tones.

Otherwise I love my iPhone.

Email App needs upgrade

The email application settings should allow you to enter a "reply-to" email address. That way those of us forwarding our corporate emails to an external account (i.e. Gmail) can reply to emails with the proper reply-to heading.

in addition to new text messages and voice mail notification on the "unlocking screen" i'd like to see it list new email's and upcomming appointments. That way you could just press 1 button to see what's happening in your life - much like the microsoft mobile today screen.

Ebooks - we must have Ebooks - this screen is too georgous!!!!!!!!

mail should have the ability to create smart mailboxes.
ipod should have the ability to create smart playlists

sms texts should have detailed time/date stamp for each text
(my idea is to tap the text bubble and it flips over to reveal the details of that message)

the ability to delete a single text from a conversation is IMPERATIVE!
