So, I didnt read through all of these posts, but Im just going to post my problem.

I keep finding that when I type text messages, I keep accidently hitting send before I finish. And whats that? There is no cancel button. I really need one! :D

I make many mistakes.

Some tips

If you are missing MMS, just use email - for friends with phones that don't also support email, you can usually use a special email address that looks something like <phonenumber>@verizon.net. That will get the photo to them via MMS.

For people missing the period, there is a GREAT tip about a shortcut for typing the period when using the normal keyboard:

https://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2007/07/03/tip-typing-a-period-quickly/

That to me replaces any need to move the period from where it is.

Additional Ideas

-Ability to transfer calls while in progress.

-Instead of the time, the user's iPhone name should be displayed on the "locked" screen. The time should be moved up to the status bar and the lock icon should be moved to the left.

-Recent calls should be separated like they are on every other phone: All, Dialed, Missed, Received

A few thoughts since Friday

Things I think need to be addressed:

- Contacts. I sync with Outlook and the "catagories don't come through. The worst thing is this; If you have a contact with a company name, this entry shows up listed by the person's name! So if I want to call Mary (I forget her last name) at XYZ company I CAN"T FIND HER!!! This needs to change (am I missing something?) Which brings me to

- Spotlight Adding Spotlight would mostly fix the above and add terrific value to other areas.

- Notes How syncing to something, even a folder full of txt files. Some more robust text capabilities would be nice (copy/paste for instance)

- Voice Dialing This is really important. I am a Mac guy, but have had a pocket PC until the iPhone. Microsoft has actually done a good implementation on this with Voice Command. No programming, just talk, (e.g. Call John Doe Work.)

I just found out that there a spotlight like function in the iPhone, but not for the contacts list!

Go to write a new SMS message (or im sure this works for email too), put the cursor in the to field, and start typing a name....

SURELY this function will be in the contacts list soon...

I'd love to see a way to change the internal sound volume... things like the little "click" before you put it into/bring it out of sleep mode, the keyboard typing sound, etc. - I realize you can silence them by putting the phone in silent mode, but I don't want the entire phone to be in silent mode, just want the system sounds volume turned down a bit. :) Other than that, I'd like to see all of the other obvious things... being able to create photo albums/sort photos in the camera roll, take videos, edit contacts while on the phone, etc. etc. All in good time I guess. Other than that, it rocks!

The calendar needs an option to specify irregular repeating events, i.e. every 3rd Tuesday of the month.

  • ability to drag music and videos into the iPhone from iTunes like you can with an iPod
  • ability to play music and video stored on your iPhone by double-clicking using your computer like you can with an iPod
I sync with my Mac at home and take the iPhone with me to a Mac in a distant land. I'd like to play the contents of the iPhone, maybe add some stuff to it, but not erase everything and sync from a different computer.

Can we download our visual voicemails to the computer? I would definitely love that feature.

My sugggestions for software updates

Even though most of the items on my list of suggestions for the iPhone have probably already been mentioned, it may be worthwhile to list them anyway in case someone, like Apple, is monitoring this forum and trying to gauge the demand for particular features.

Here's my list of suggestions for improvements in no particular order whatsoever:

- Provide landscape support for any app that uses a keyboard. My accuracy on the Safari landscape keyboard is nearly flawless because of its bigger size but not nearly as good in keyboard portrait mode.
- Improve the Calculator app by adding scientific or other modes as well as more precision for the basic calculator. And, for God's sake, tone down those ridiculously GIGANTIC numerals.
- This is a biggy: Add a Back button somewhere to return you to the last screen you were on, whatever it was (provided it makes sense to do so in a particular context).
- Display an on-screen indicator in the area near the signal strength as to whether you are currently in ring or silent mode.
- Allow Bluetooth syncing (even though I'd probably rarely use this since I normally sync at the same time that I'm recharging the battery).
- Provide Copy/Cut/Paste functionality similar to any other operating system.
- Allow multiple emails to be deleted at the same time through multi-select or some other method.
- Make it easier to check your email from multiple accounts without having to wind your way back to the email accounts screen then choosing a different email account.
- Provide more options for your email accounts like Mail on a Mac such as how long to keep email on the server, etc.
- Add a Home button to Safari.
- Allow custom ringtones to be created--preferably without having to pay for them through iTunes as has been rumored.
- Provide voice dialing (even though I'd rarely use this I realize that it's important to a lot of people).
- Install a few games.
- Add an option to Safari to render pages as if it were a tiny web browser so that I'm not forced to zoom in to view every web page in the world.
- Port Flash to the iPhone but please give us an option to easily turn it off or on because 75% or more of Flash files are just plain annoying.
- Add a very secure, highly encrypted username/password application to keep track of usernames and passwords since most of us have numerous accounts to keep track of.
- Provide a lot more information about recent calls.
- Allow the Home screen to be customized much as the Dock is on a Mac.
- PLEASE let me change the font in the Notes app because the current one that you are forced to use sucks big time.
- Display the current conditions (or reasonably recent conditions) on the icon for the Weather widget. Apple already displays the current date on the Calendar app icon so it must not be that hard to do.
- Similarly, display the current time on the icon for the Clock app.
- Add junk mail filtering to the Mail app.

(1) Chapter Marker Selection Menu when watching Videos...it exists for music videos in the iPod Coverflow Section (although when you select a song, it only plays the audio). When watching Video with chapter markers, you get which chapter you are in, but you should be able to tap that and like the Coverflow Section, the controls should flip around and display the chapters.

(2) A Finder for files
(3) Louder Speakers
(4) Games
(5) Custom Ringtones (which I have no worries that they are coming soon)
(6) Safari seems to exit its App more than it should, so that needs to be fixed.
(7) To-Do-Lists...which should be coming as well.

Otherwise I am very happy overall with the iPhone.

The missed calls/voice mail notification needs to be extended. Only one beep after missing either is not enough.

- Ability to select a group when creating a new contact on the iPhone. If you use groups in Address book, the iPhone will sync the groups, however, you currently can't select a group on the iPhone when creating a new contact.

- Ability to select category when creating a new calendar entry. Why shouldn't you be able to do this? Doesn't make sense.

- Louder SMS/Caller notifications. I have never missed this many Calls and SMS messages in my life.

- MMS support. It's really embarrassing to get that "Please log into mymessage.com" notification when receiving an MMS on a $600 phone.

- Multi-language support. There needs to be a little icon on the keyboard where you can switch to different language dictionaries and keyboard layouts. I'd love to be able to write German text messages to my friends with a Germany keyboard layout.

Haven't seen these yet...

-- A COPY button, similar to a CAPS LOCK key that allows you to use the magnifier to highlight text by dragging across it to copy it. It then turns into a PASTE key, you set your cursor with the magnifier, and hit PASTE

-- Or using 2 fingers with the magnifier to drag and select

-- A HOME icon at the top, between the time and battery to return to the main screen (using a hardware button is asking for trouble)

-- A way to 'gray-out' all the CONTACTS in address book except for the ones you select and use frequently

-- In NOTES, the ability to type a person's name, which then turns into a link so you can call them without going to address book

-- Checkmark boxes in NOTES

And to me the biggest problem that has been said already:

-- A way to check or uncheck multiple emails to delete, move or flag as spam! I have unintentionally opened SO many spams since I got my iPhone because I use the swipe to make the delete key appear. I need to use the edit button instead -- the swipe is sometimes read as a tap which opens the #$@&* message

Otherwise, this phone rocks! I've been a lot more productive being able to do so much WHEREVER I am.

i know some of these have been mentioned but here are a few things ive noticed

1. highlight multiple characters when draging cursor for deletion or copying
2. weather and clock update on the icons at home
3. have option to save notes with a title
4. re-order weather cities with a drag and drop feature

bugs ive noticed...

1. i can't seem to view https sites?
2. iPod crashes when surfing web
3. when adding custom artwork since iTunes doesn't supply them all, i've noticed they sometimes are missing in cover flow, but when i change to the vertical view it appears... then i go back to coverflow and it's there until i scroll away it disappears again .. very strange

anyone notice similar issues to mine?

Great list. I've called both Apple and at&t to lodge formal complaints about several things. I suggest everyone else do the same; as this is big business, this is what they hear. Apple makes it easy (www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html). Please feel free to copy anything I've listed below, and I doubt rjacksonb would mind if you copied his list.

Here's what I sent Apple:

First of all, I really enjoy using the device. For the most part it is very pleasurable. I purchased two devices, for my wife and myself. With that said, the following is a brief list of complaints I have that I (and, probably, many others) would like to see fixed ASAP:

-Compatibility with iPod chargers has not been superb. Some work, some do not, and on some the iPhone registers that it is charging but in fact does not take on any new charge.

-Compatibility with car charger/playback accessories. I have a Belkin charger that sporadically charges the phone (as mentioned above), but never uses the ‘line out’ feature. Shouldn’t we be able to play back our music over the car stereo?

-The lack of MMS support is extremely disappointing. The phone needs to support MMS. Period.
a. It is absolutely absurd that we must send and receive pictures by email. Full MMS support in both directions is necessary.
b. When we do receive a MMS at&t directs us to a link (viewmymessage.com) with a complex ‘message ID’ and password which is blocked on the EDGE network. We can only get to it via WiFi. And when we finally do get to the link, it is a Flash picture and we can’t see it, or even download it from a computer. Again, absurd.
c. We should be able to save received picture, whether it be via email or via MMS, to the phone memory and later transfer those pictures to a computer.

-The phone should be accessible as a removable hard drive, as the iPod does when it’s connected to the computer.

-The phone should fully support Microsoft Activesync. It’s just necessary for users of all groups and ages. Exchange is becoming ubiquitous.

-IMAP support should include the ability to subscribe to folders, and check all of the folders periodically. Currently, the only automatically updating folder is the inbox. Any subfolders do not update unless they are selected.

-The Bluetooth should be accessible as a modem for peripheral devices.

-When syncing with Outlook contacts, all of the addresses and numbers should register in the device. Currently several of the numbers do not display for those of my contacts with multiple numbers.

-The Safari browser should support both JAVA and Flash (including streaming video). This browser should be as fully functional of a browser as any other. There is no reason to cripple it.

-The quality of the voicemail messages that are sent to the phone could be a bit better. This is a server/compression issue, not an iPhone issue.

-While text messaging we should be able to send one message to multiple recipients.

-Searching the contact list should be made easier by displaying a number-pad/keyboard option similar to the one utilized when generating a new email. (I believe this is called Spotlight.)

-The ability to open more email attached file types. For example, mp3 files should play in the iPod portion, wmv files should play as video, wma should play as audio, mp4 (H.264 and otherwise) should play as video, others should be supported too. We know the device is capable of handling these formats.

-Playback of youtube.com videos should be supported. By this I mean all youtube videos. Not just those converted to H.264 already (a predetermined list). We should be able to use a fully functional browser to surf to youtube or google video and watch the video via the built in player.

Lets be honest, ‘Apple Computer’ is not sacrificing anything by giving the end user more flexibility in using their devices. I hope that we see these changes take place very soon. Thanks for your forward looking attitude!

i like what i have but...needed upgrades to iphone:

1- HSDPA for True GSM 3G
2- Real Keyboard that screen slides up to. al la Blackberry and Treo meets sidekick.
3- 60-80gb storage
4- ability to have all emails in one inbox
5- needs ichat. would be even cooler to have a mini vga camera to shoot ichat av for live video chate.
6- 5 megapixel camera with flash.
7- interchangeable batteries
8- ability to search your contacts better. currently you can only do by name from quick menu. i need ability to enter other search terms to get a name. ie what blackberry allows for. or a quick search key.
9- ability to listen to your vm on the bluetooth headset. right now when i have been on phone on calls. i check voicemails and the bluetooth headset isnt active. instead i have to listen to on the phone or reidentify that i want to listen via headset. noob programming on this function.
10- better iPod accessory compatibility. I have a great belkin charger/audio input to my stereo. only thing is the iphone doesnt work with it. although it will take a charge. my bet is apple deactivated compatibility to be able to sell more accessories. lame!

11- bluetooth access for high speed data. so you can use your phone as a modem to your macbook pro

12- ability to SMS pics and video or audio

13- voice dialing

14- games like backgammon, poker and more.

15 a few buttons to use for programs, starting and ending call.

16- louder speaker phone and louder handset speaker for regular calls.
17- Firewire charging and Sync!! its faster than USB

stuff i want:

customizable ringtones / sounds
translation widget (this would be good when traveling)
activesync / exchange direct push support (imap sucks)
conversion widget
itunes needs to properly recognize compilations as such (right now, some of my albums show up as being by whichever artist did the first track)

ability to cancel text messages while they are sending!!!

screensaver mode

ability to email multiple pictures taken with the built-in camera

ability to send SMS texts to multiple contacts

ichat

this phone needs major work!!

One of the things I was thinking about is something to ease the lack of GPS.

Instead of having to find an address to put into the start input for the map for directions, you just click where you think you are on the map and the software finds the closest address to where you pointed and puts that as the start for directions.

- Copy and Paste text.

- Ability to send a multiple number of photos in an e-mail, and not just one.

- Ability to transfer photos from iPhone to Computer

Those are my only complaints thus far.
