Here's the list of things I'd like to see...

-Ability to send 1 text message to mulitple contacts.
-MMS
-Ability to click on a single text message from the conversation log and forward it to other contacts.
-Ability to not only clear out the whole chat conversations, but individual messages if I choose.
-Ability to sort all the songs from an artist in their correct order as seen on the albums like on the ipod. Right now, I only see them in alphabetical order.
-A file browser to save email attachments and picture messages (if that becomes a feature)
-Copy/paste ability
-Better email structure. I gets annoying to back up a go forward a whole bunch of times to get to inbox from multiple accounts.
-Full exchange support

I'm sure there is more, this is just what I came up with on the fly.

mail should have the ability to create smart mailboxes.
ipod should have the ability to create smart playlists

sms texts should have detailed time/date stamp for each text
(my idea is to tap the text bubble and it flips over to reveal the details of that message)

That's an excellent idea! When it flips it should also allow you to delete just that message and/or forward to other contacts! That would make the sms feature much more robust.

Wow

You guys have some great ideas.
I was impressed that all of you kept to the theme of software updates.
I was suprised that there are so many features that could be added.
Maybe someday some could make a comprehensive list of all these and wouldn't it be great to put these in a "poll format" so we could get an idea of their relative importance.
I think a lot of these can be added through software updates over the next couple of years. I'm real curious to see how often software updates come out and how many of these features are incorporated.
BTW, kudos to the guys who came up with the double space = period. What a great idea. Periods are so important. My sister missed one and my mom started crying, my dad hit her, and the guy across the street left town.

Sorry if this was already mentioned, I looked around and didnt find it. I was thinking it might be cool if you could have an iTunes app on the iPhone. This way you could download music or movies away from the computer and than use them immeaditly.

When you read the following article/review on AppleInsider, and it is very thorough, many things that we want & wish for are not going to happen. Apple was very purposeful in determining how they wanted the :apple: Phone to work (obviously), when you start adding in our wish list it goes against Apple's intent.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/07/02/apples_iphone_an_initial_but_in_depth_review.html

I hope, however in some instances I doubt:(

I read that article and think the exact opposite.

I expect to see Apple offer us options/updates in the near future.

If we want specific apps, I am sure we will have the option

I want to be able to listen to attached wav files from wihtin my email app so I can get my voip voicemails for my company. Someone needs to moderate this thread so it is organized with an orderly list at the top.

Thanks to the Macrumors guys for the sticky. If a mod hasn't already decided to do this, I will go through the thread and post a master wishlist in the original message.

Standard things: support for different calendars in the calendar app. Support for task lists.

Now, onto the issue of IM:

Wouldn't it be nice if they integrated the text interface with IM? Let's say you somehow log into a Jabber server (say, GTalk). iChat / Address Book on your Mac can already show presense indicator. In this case, when you "chat" to a person (using the Text interface), it would sent a message via GTalk. Once that user signs out of GTalk, the messages would go via Text. When they sign in, back to GTalk. That's a real text conversation! Of course there would have to be some kind of visual clue and option so you know which method is being used.

Something I Noticed

Love all of the ideas. One small thing I noticed while playing around in the contacts section is that if you add someones birthday it doesn't appear on your calendar as an event. This seems like a no brainer and a quick fix form Apple. A more detailed power meter would be very handy. I like the post regarding a similar time readout like on the MB and MBP laptops.A shortcut to your contacts from the main page would be nice or the option to add an icon for it. Most of the time to initiate a phone call I go there so saving a click would be nice. I'm crossing my fingers that a basic update for some of the more pressing issues will be out soon, only time will tell.

Ability to add/edit contacts while talking on the phone is CRUCIAL. When someone gives me an address/email/new number/etc, i should be able to go to the contacts list and EDIT it!

I am surprised you can not add/edit the contacts while you are talking on the phone. Can you atleast take notes while talking? That may be a reasonably acceptable substitute for the short term?

An easy one I would like is the ability to disable the delete for space pop up at the end of a movie (or only ask once only!). I have some short home movies I like to show and it is annoying to see that every time.

It would be nice for the macrumors team to do a compilation of all the requests and create a giant poll of the top twenty items so that Apple would have some idea of the priority/urgency in which to tackle these things...

my list

In no particular order...

SMS- landscape keyboard. Delete messages and not entire conversations!!! Send confirmation... I have accidentally sent 2 messages already.

Chat- the iChat look of SMS causes me to expect an immediate reply, anyway.

Coverflow in iPod- It sometimes gets stuck in coverflow and I have to return to the home screen.

Homepage- set it against the wallpaper-- right now all homepages look exactly the same... yuk!!!

DOCK!!!- I'd like to choose my homepage icons and make them dockable!! The 'stocks' button is soooooo worthless to me.

Home Button- Add a HOME button to the touch screen!!!

Camera-- no flash. darn it!!! no camcorder... DARNIT!!! Maybe add some of the fun, Photobooth features!!!??? Please.

Youtube- it's cool, but the quality of the picture is not that good.

The phone has been so hyped... oh my word!!! And I totally understand why with the touch screen, full internet. I just think it is a wonderful little device and if improvements will be made at no further cost... GREAT!!!:) :D

To me this is an unacceptable solution.

If someone gives me a long address, I would have to go edit/create a contact, go back and forth between Notes/Contact list, which would require 3 or 4 taps per time.

To me this seems like an EASY thing to fix.

It's really little more than common sense

I actually read every single one of the suggestions- some are nitpicks, some, if not most, are right on the money.

I personally think that things like Flash, iLife integration, and Word/Excel editing is in the foreseeable future, and with the exception of iLife, is simply a matter of licensing. So the lack of those features certainly don't bother me, knowing that they are coming (providing said licensing agreements can be made). Most of the things in this thread are just so obvious "Duh!" moments, it's hard to believe that my phone can't do them.

Some things I think needed reiteration?

1) There needs be a way to STOP your texts from showing up on the main screen when you get an SMS. Not everyone who can see your phone needs to know your personal business.

2) The ability to delete one message of an SMS conversation- there is no reason why I should have to delete the entire thread.

2) Pressing the spacebar twice would insert a period and a space

3) The iPhone has between 4-8 gigs of space. Don't delete phone logs until ___ (user changeable) space has been reached. I was quite perturbed to find out that a call I received on Friday could not be accessed on Tuesday.

4) The ability to send text messages to multiple recipients. Don't think, Apple- implement it now. Flick, press, flick, press, flick, press. Boom! 3 people added to your text message. Wanna add more? Rinse and repeat.

5) The ability to change the sounds for the different actions and the volume for the related option (i.e. the mail sound, the keyboard click sound, and the touch tone while using the "old fashioned" keypad)

6) Search for music just like iTunes and the 6G iPods

7) Landscape text entering mode on any application in which you can enter text

8) More security options and secure password storing options (Keychain, perhaps?)

9) The option to display owner information when the phone is locked. (If you lose your phone, how else can someone reach you to let you know they have it?) This actually just happened with my Blackberry Pearl, and was the only way I was able to retrieve it.

10) Find a frickn' work around to the EDGE limitation that causes voice calls to go to voice mail when your phone is sending or receiving data.

current feature upgrades:

1) imap idle support
2) cut/copy/paste
3) upgrade iphone safari 2.5 to safari 3

new features/apps (realistic):

1) itunes store (inevitable)
2) ichat voip (true chat client w/leopard's new audio codec for audio chat)
3) :apple:tv support. tap the :apple:tv button on the homescreen. powers up the :apple:tv, allows you to view your entire library and play through :apple:tv. gives you a more advanced remote than the mini remote apple has
4) dashboard/third party app area. tap the icon once to get another screen full of apps

new features (wishful thinking)

1) ichat av, using the lcd screen as a camera (sort of). when docked to your mac it acts as the camera and chat window for active video chats.

2) true gps (not software obviously)
3) 3g
4) screen acts as a biometric scanner. as you drag your thumb across the unlock slide, it reads your fingerprints. three options for security:
  • none at all just opens your home screen regardless of who unlocks the phone
  • guest user access, automatically (creates if necessary and) logs in to a guest account if anyone but the owner of the phone unlocks the phone. if the owner unlocks the phone then drops them in to their home screen. owner can limit the number of guest accounts (e.g. for home use if husband/wife/kids sometimes use the phone)
  • phone doesn't unlock at all if anyone but the owner tries to access it. additionally user settings allow for a picture to be taken, the thumbprint to be stored and email message with the gps/triangulated coordinates of the phone to be sent to the users home email account.

"One small thing I noticed while playing around in the contacts section is that if you add someones birthday it doesn't appear on your calendar as an event. This seems like a no..."

Would love to see this added to the Calender as well...B-Day alerts are good. Seems like a small little thing but it's important enough that Apple made it a calender option in preferences

Considering my phone is extremely buggy mostly when multitasking (i.e. listening to music and surfing the internet or text messaging)...buggy in that the music will stop playing all together and/or safari will crash

Has anybody else had issues like this? I'm positive it's a software issue that can/will be resolved in future updates but I'm just curious

Here's one i haven't seen yet. I'd love to have the option to have the entire interface displayed upside down. This way i could hold it with the headphone jack on the bottom, where it should have been in the first place. This could be done with the accelerometer or just as a system wide switch from inside the settings.

Also, I'd like to see the wallpaper used more often. The home screen should have my wallpaper in the background as well as an idle screen that would show it instead of turning off the screen.

Shared streaming media over Wi-Fi. This would be a great feature for if you're in your house and you want to see media that is on one of your computers and you don't necessarily have the space on your phone (which would basically eliminate the need to have more than 8GB, at least while you're around another computer with music and videos!)

That's my 2 cents for now!
