So to all those saying apple shouldn't have had an event at all, and just put these up on their website...

Has apple ever introduced a new form factor of iPod in the past without an event?

Mh, so next question, how does one disable the links to the iTunes Store for the song playing in iTunes 8?

the iPod range is the biggest selling personal music player in the world, and the iTunes store is the biggest music outlet in the USA.
Updates to these therefore interest a lot of people and make it worthy of an event.
I'm happy with my current iPods so probably won't be buying this time around, (the new touch does look very tempting though in 32GB :D), but it's good to see Apple revamping their lineup to keep ahead of the pack

Is this the Genius sidebar on the right? Click the boxed arrow at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
If it's the mini-store at the bottom (not sure if that's still there in 8, as it seems to disappear once you enable the Genius), then I think it's in the Store menu

Lots of people think they know, but nobody can really say for sure until apple clarifies.

I wonder if the iPhone needs 2.1 to use it? Apple has not listed compatibility for certain products at the time of their release in the past then added them later.
The Apple rep who spoke to me said that it will tell you everything you need to know over the headphones, and if you have speakable items set up on your computer, the nano will inherit the voice you chose to use. It's unclear whether this feature will also be part of iPod touches and iPhones.
From Arstechnica... So if we were to believe that the new earbuds have a volume feature that even Apple isn't quite sure if it would work.

I'm talking about the arrow linking to the iTunes Store, in 7.7 one was able to turn the links off, can't seem to find this option in 8.0.

Removing the 160GB Classic was such a stupid decision which makes no sense, I think the reason must be because their Classic iPod OS can't handle that much content...that's why 160GB Classics that are full tend to crash a lot -- plus don't really have good enough sorting. SO they gave up....pathetic.

Wonder how many "shots in the mouth" NBC had to take before Apple said "OK, that's enough, get up off your knees, go get yourself cleaned up and we'll continue our meeting about letting you back into the iTunes store."?

*zzzziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip* <-Apple's fly as NBC walks to the bathroom with their head hung down in shame.

"Can you believe NBC took that for an hour and a half???? Wow they must have finally realized how stupid they were for leaving us!"

dude, that is crazy

hey hey, so off color but too funny. well played!!
It was VERY Off-Color I have to admit, but it was also my first thought when I read that NBC was back on Gizmodo's live feed during the "event".

Everyone knew that they were completely mental for leaving Apple. If the RIAA hasn't been able to crack Apple's shell about pricing what did NBC/G.E. actually think they were going to be able to get out of Apple, especially when every other channel out there has been tripping over each other to get their stuff up onto iTunes???

....and what happens when the products are acutally released and the swarms of people buy for the xmas season?

exactly.

That is completely off-topic and besides the point. The rub here in this thread is that the event was underwhelming. But you just go right on ahead being a fanboy and defending Apple to the nth degree. I bet you were one of those misguided souls that also defended Apple the day after MobileMe came out....

....the iphone OS cant handle blah blah, what are you talking about?

the classic is entirely seperate from the iphone.

also, i suspect that not that many people were filling 160 GB with their libraries, and as stated before they did away with the fatter model, it saves all around really. SLIGHTLY smaller capacity (when talkiing about music ne way), all lines use uniform parts now. From a cost of production standpoint, its a great move making everything uniform.

Bah, the new headphones are for the new iPods from today only. STILL NO REMOTE FOR THE (old) TOUCH OR (any) IPHONE!

LAME!!!!!

I can kind of understand why they did it (not that I agree with it!) - the Classic is the only one now that has different form factors for different capacities, which means extra tooling, etc.
Also, if you have a library big enough to justify the 160GB over the 120GB then it's likely to be bigger than that and you're going to have to manage it with playlists, etc for either size.
Finally, I think the days when you could carry all your media in your pocket are behind us and I also think hard disk based music players are in their death throes: Two more increases in size for the touch and we'll be at 128MB which is (conveniently) bigger than the now largest classic: I expect the 120MB to be the last HDD based iPod Apple make...

ooh god help me, uve labeled me! oh no.

how is the stock price during the xmas season irrelevent when you where the one bringing up a dip during the event (DURING THE EVENT) when in actuality only speculation would cause that current dip, as wallstreet wont readily know about the updates or how they will sell. The stock price is only relevent when the products actually go on sale.

and no, i didnt defend mobile me, that was a big mistake on their part, but you seem to take anything apple does personally. So tell me, whos the fanboy?

Im just stating what i see from a marketing perspective, and from that view, this was a big event with all the new products/updates. Apparantly you were watching from a "this is what i want even tho anyone with half a brain wouldnt expect anything radically new (especially a computer) at an ipod event, and if apple doesnt deliver the product that I want ill throw a tantrum" viewpoint.

I would be happy to do this, if there was a good way to do it that still syncs ALL your playlists. The only way to do it now is to uncheck all the music that won't fit before syncing, NOT a good solution at all.

That would be utterly stupid and a complete and total failure. Good for Microsoft though!

Wow, that was so insightful. Spare me the dime psychology lesson, professor fanboy. I actually have everything I want at the moment, except maybe for an updated ACD but I gave up on them materializing long, long ago.

I'm not sure what you mean "even Apple isn't quite sure if it would work"? It hasn't shipped yet and we don't have full info yet. We just don't know either way, it makes more sense to just wait for clarification than to just make wild guesses.

Or that it simply isn't selling.

It's not besides the point at all.

There are always incredibly high expectations for apple events, often so high that they can't be met regardless of what is announced. It's very common for AAPL to drop regardless of what is announced (as well it's very common for those on message boards to insist that it was the most disappointing announcement ever). And invariably the products sell well and the stock price goes right back up.

It doesn't matter if the people on this message board liked the event, or really even if the press did. The only thing that matters is if the new product sells.

Who really cares if it was "underwhelming" as long as sales of the new nanos and touches are strong?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but it's easy to have the ipod only sync playlists (and certain ones) instead of syncing all music.

I love the new visualizer. I just spent 20 minutes staring at it, and I'm completely sober. :)

I want to sync all my smart playlists. Not just certain ones.

The way a smart playlist is treated as a regular playlist when syncing is......lame. Another thing they probably didn't fix.

 those new earbuds dont come with any ipod....

The built in remote (and mic, which isn't surprising) only works on the 4th gen nanos, 2nd gen touches, and newest classic iPod. They won't work with the 1st gen touch, or the iPhone. There's still no remote available (from Apple) for the iPhone or original touch (he remote/FM tuner works on the older iPods but not the touch, maybe not the 3rd gen nano).

I don't know what there is to be confused about.

So you check all your smart playlists. What am I missing?

You actually have no idea how the market works do you?

The market reacts to NEWS... any news.
News affects price. Rumor can affect price.
A mouse farting in the factory affects the price.

The market was just as aware of what was happening as the rest of us were, and it reacted negatively.
Apple stock closed down at $151.68, that's $6.24 below the opening price for the day.
Apple is still pricing their products at a premium and the market knows that sales will be weaker than normal due to the current state of the economy.

And just a hint... When the new iPods went on sale after the speech, the stock price fell another $2 and change.

The market reacts very quickly and without prejudice. ;)

Yep. But as long as these sell well, the stock price goes right back up, so unless you absolutely have to sell today, who cares? The market is notorious for knocking down AAPL for no good reason, only to have it bounce right back once people figure things out. The market constantly thinks that the latest Apple announcement will be a bomb, and the sales numbers constantly prove them wrong.

Apple is still pricing their products at a premium and the market knows that sales will be weaker than normal due to the current state of the economy.

That's what you think. Despite the market reaction and all the whining here, I think sales of the new ipods will be as strong as ever.
