I really hope iPhone4S is available tomorrow with Assistant.

6am start then ... not going to get much sleep tonight. Pretty well ready for serious disappointment, but at least there is no way it could be worse than staying up till 2.30am to get Lion installed at release and then realising within a week that Lion was not my friend.

Staunchly with the redesign or bust group - this is about retention not just more sales.

My Final Predictions:

iPhone 5:
1.6ghz Quad Core Processor
2 gigs
5.25" screen
comes in 16gig, 32gig, 64 gig sizes.
Upgradable to LTE via software
Thinner and lighter than current iPhone 4.
20 hour battery limit playing videos.

iPhone 4:
Only sold in 16gig set for $19.95 with contract. $179.95 with no contract.

iOS Assistant:
Noted on a slide but not talked about in the presentation.

3G Touch:
4.4" screen
3G Capable
Upgradable to LTE
comes in 32gig, 64gig and 128 gig configurations.
$99.95

I agree with the afore mentioned comments. If Apple doesn't at least meet the specs of the Galaxy SII, then then they are in trouble. While a speed boost is great, I don't see why they should stop there...

That's probably why the iPhone 4 is the best selling smart phone in the US and the 3GS is the second best selling smart phone... Because people really care about specs.

I'm sticking to my prediction of:

iPhone 4.5
Same internals as the iPad2
Current form-factor, same screen
16 and 32GB models
No upgraded camera

iPod Touch
New form factor with 4" screen
16, 32, 64GB models
A5 processor
Upgraded camera

exactly! as long as it looks cool and has cool commercials for it, the iphone4s will be awesome and stay on top!

I think I must be getting old or something. I used to get excited about a new iphone announcement and figure out how I can convince the wife to let me upgrade. Now I am more excited about iOS5 than any new phone. Maybe I'm just more than happy with my iPhone4.

That said I'm liking the sound of assistant which seems to be new hardware only (?)

This.

Except the iPod touch will have a 4.44" screen, and you will be able to get the iPhone at 64gb, and it will have an upgraded camera.

Agreed, except for camera
I do find it a bit strange that they would be naming it "iPhone 4S" especially with it coming preloaded with iOS5. Also, as owner of a 3GS, the name as always confused people (they usually refer to it as iPhone 3).

iPod Touch
I've also been wondering if these mystery cases that have appeared are really just for a new iPod Touch, that will be able to reboots sales of the iPod lineup. I think your predictions may be on the right track.

This is genuinely good article.

**** me, good articles are very rare here. So when one pops up it stands out so much it screams out "read me now". I did. And I'm glad I did.

ios5 compatibility arriving

Correct me if I'm wrong but they haven't even started letting devs submit iOS 5 compatible apps yet right?

actually, iOS 5 compatible apps are coming. microsoft just released an update, last week, for photosynth stating iOS 5 compatibility.

I'm going to go with nothing too fancy, just 6 models:

iPhone 5 (four models):
1) iPad 2 internals, but with 1GB of RAM
2) Upgraded camera, either to 8MP or better backlit sensor technology
3) Redesign to tapered design, similar to iPad 2-- with a larger screen (~4") but a similar form factor to iPhone 4, most likely due to smaller bezel
4) 32 and 64GB options
5) Black and white options
6) $199 and $299 respectively, after subsidy
7) 3 major carriers in the U.S., VZW, AT&T and Sprint
8) WiMax on Sprint model, 3G on VZW and 3.5G/"4G" on AT&T

iPhone 4S (1 model):
1) Upgraded internals to iPad 2, but same 512MB RAM as iPhone 4
2) Upgraded camera
3) 16GB only
4) Black only
5) Same design as iPhone 4
6) $99 after subsidy
7) 3 major carriers in the U.S., VZW, AT&T and Sprint
8) 3G only

iPhone 4 (1 model):
1) 8GB only
2) Otherwise the same as iPhone 4
3) 3 major carriers again
4) $Free$ after subsidy, or $399 without a contract
5) Black only

I find this hard to believe tbh, it would be very lazy on Apple's part to after all this time just make it a mini iPad that can make calls, I don't believe that Apple would be so lazy as to do what you have just said

My last post before the big announcement. I expect:

1) iPhone 4 with 8 gb for the lower end

2) iPhone 4S for the higher end. It will be just slightly faster than the current iPhone 4 and have a slightly better camera, but Apple will downplay those issues and instead claim that the Assistant feature will revolutionize the world. Which of course it won't - it will be just one gimmick and barely used feature.

I hope I'm wrong, but if I'm right I'll just stick to my iPhone 3GS and hope that the iPhone 6 (5?) will have a better design than a brick made of glass.

Phew! We were all waiting for your 'last post'. Now we can sleep. Thanks.

Oh, you might have made it more interesting/less whiney or actually given a valuable contribution to, you know, *really* keep us up to date, instead of just adding to the pointless noise and cry baby "I'm keeping my 3GS" protests.
None of it matters.

Still. Like many others, I'll be looking forward to your first post post next iPhone release...

Yawn.

I'll be happy......

...with IOS5 launch....and then I'll still have the best looking smartphone!!

Software is the way forward in a recessed world with shrinking natural resources.

I'm sticking to my prediction of:

iPod Touch
New form factor with 4" screen
16, 32, 64GB models
A5 processor
Upgraded camera

I highly doubt it would have the same camera, seeing as new camera parts for whatever new phone is coming today have been leaked, I believe. I doubt the phone wouldn't get the upgrade when the iPod does.

What will actually happen:

iPhone 4S:
- A5 Processor
- CDMA/GSM "World Phone"
- 1GB RAM
- "Assistant" will be an exclusive feature
- 8 megapixel camera
- 32GB, 64GB
- Same or slightly better battery
- Same design, sans some change Apple will claim fixes the death grip

iPod Touch:
- Same basic design
- A5
- 1GB RAM
- Upgraded cameras

iPhone 4:
- 8GB free on contract

Why do I say this? Because there is 0 evidence of an iPhone 5. Rumors based solely off of case designs are, and always have been, bogus. Like every product launch, everyone is getting their hopes up for an impossible dream product, that Apple will not announce, and then come on these forums to complain about how Apple won't sell any... while Apple laughs all the way to the bank.

However, the basic idea behind the current rumors for the iPhone 5 will come in the iPhone 6 when all current iPhone 4 owners' contracts are up and Apple can sell a bunch of iPhone 6's with a major design change.

Bet the house on this...

iPhone4S
A5 Chip
1Gig of Ram
8MP Camera, better sensor
Improved battery
Major selling point will be the Assistant feature
Available in 16, 32 and possibly 64 gigs
World Phone

iPhone4
Same specs as last years model, but only available in 8gigs and goes down to $99.

iPhone3GS will be discontinued

Other predictions
We're going to hear a lot about Assistant
Tim Cook will make brief remarks about how pleased he is to become CEO
iPod Touch will be improved but barely mentioned
Probably a pretty short and subdued keynote.
