Let's for a minute imagine we're back in 2009 and you're saying this :

Looking at it now in 2011, we know the following :

- Every iPhone gets 3 iOS revisions.
- iPhone 3G managed to slip in a barely functionning iOS 4 (it's 3rd revision) with no multi-tasking or desktop wallpapers. A crippled last revision if anything. And it was barely usable on the phone, making the thing crawl and lag.
- iPhone 3GS, the "Speedbump" only geeks and developers care about is now getting iOS 5, it's 3rd revision of iOS. It will be a fully functional release. It also runs quite adequately according to developers who have tried it.

So I think speedbumped phones are more than geek and developer attractions. They are pretty much future-proofing. If whatever comes out this afternoon doesn't interest me enough to pony up 600$ (and my CC is ready), then I know that my 3GS can last another year with confidence. The iPhone 3G owners couldn't even say as much.

Hindsight is always 20/20 and Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it... words to live by.

By this I mean that the AVERAGE consumer doesn't care about RAM, overclocking, GPU's, CPU's MHz etc

As long as the phone plays Angry Birds then people are happy.

That is a fact my friend and I only deal in facts.

Reality is only hours away. :D

I'd love to see a new iPhone5, but I'm mostly excited about the release of iOS5 and what else Apple has to offer. Even if the iPhone is "just" the 4s, for most consumers that will be enough and if they replace the 3gs with a version of the 4 for $100 or less, it will burn up the pavement at the low end.

I know all the geeks here freak out at the prospect that the specs may not be enough, but the reality, 95% of consumers don't care as long as it works well and looks cool.

If this whole keynote surrounds crap like this I'll never use on iOS5 and little about a brand new phone.... ugh...

That's quite a harsh reaction. Of course it won't be only about Assistant (if at all), but to think that the Assistant concept is crap only shows a lack of imagination.

A UI experience based on true AI / human interaction done right would be paradigm shifting. The ability to baseline /learn an individuals way of speaking, then have that individual interact with all Apple devices across iCloud and all Apple devices is simply mind blowing. App developers will have a whole new world of possibilities open up before them.

A lack of imagination my friend.

I get a sneaky feeling that IOS 5 will be released today. :D

On a sidenote, with Steve Jobs gone; will there be a "one more thing" and if so what will it be?

According to Reuters he is going to be doing the keynote tonight so don't write him off just yet

Don't mistake your opinion for facts. Fact : The "Superphones" are all over the carrier advertising campaigns these days :

Dual core!

4G !

Big displays!

Say consumers don't care all you want, I really doubt the carriers would have been pushing this stuff for 3 months now if it didn't appeal to the masses and bring in people to buy these "SuperPhones". ;)

Your subjective opinion might differ, but the facts are plain as day. Speedbumped phones are more than just geek/developer attraction.

Problem being the Vodafail incident. To you guys who are unfamiliar visit vodafail.com

Again, in either melbourne or sydney optus ain't really an option if you want to, oh, i don't know, want to use your phone, even more so if you want to use data. Telstra is really the only option for higher end phone to get decent speeds with your high end phones.

yeah so true, I'm in highschool so I use Facebook alot so it's good that Facebook is free. I think telstra owns all of the phone lines and **** so they just dog us by making everything so expensive. and when Im home my phone Internet gets turned off and I use my wifi , anyway, telstra are dogs

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let it be iPod Touch w/ 3G!!!

The iPod Touch is going away. You should be wishing for the iPad Nano 3G. ;) (the tapered teardrop shape is probably the new iPad Nano afterall...)

I am familiar with Vodafone and Optus, and their pros and cons.
I recently tested Telstra on their iPad plan.

Optus is for low end desperate younger users, and cannot be recommended.
Vodafone while aimless is workable.
Telstra has the most absent marketing, and boring options.
As for their so-called 'best' network...I got marginally better reception, which actually switched to 3/Vodafone when going through tunnels.

Jury's still out, but as a network and customer service tester (wherever travel permits), Vodafone hasn't quite failed just yet, though my wife hates them.

It's a matter of balance and expectations.
For the average user, they expect and want what just works.
For the more demanding user, we look for the whole package, and encourage the networks to improve, by giving useful feedback.

Optus fails on options and customer service.
Vodafone fails on average, but is usable.
Telstra fails by not enticing me to use them, which is probably the worst.
Their 4G website is taking 4 minutes to load, and it's still terribly laid out.

Well, the official price drop has started at Telstra - $429 for the 3Gs, down from $719.

Vodafone will respond with $419 shortly.

More later.

I can already see the din of Assistant praise is already drowning out talk of what a crappy phone will be released today. Damn shame the sheep baaaa so loudly.

Frankly, I'm eager to get my hands on the new iPhone, but the Voice Assistant thing is quite leaving me cold. I don't really care for it and I think people have built up way too much expectations of a Star Trek like "Computer, Tea, Earl Grey, Hot." type of thing that it really can't live up to (speech recognition just isn't at that level yet).

I'm betting this is going to be the biggest let down in all of this, more so than a Sprint exclusive redesigned iPhone 4S would be.

Facebook uses next to no bandwidth at all. Telstra own all the copper internet and phone lines, soon to be replaced by the NBN. Too many people have been put on the optus network, which is why it's crap, Telstra have a HSPA+ network on the 850MHz band, to be honest I'm actually not sure if the iPhones support it, but I'd like to see the new iPhone having support for good 3G technology (possibly LTE, which Telstra will have deployed by the end of the year).

Were you using a NextG sim? I get full reception in the melbourne tunnels on their 850 network.

And countless other examples if you type Steve Jobs into Google

Some blogger called Robert Scobie says he won't be there but Reuters v some guy posting from his bedroom ? no contest

Steve would not go to the launch just to wave to the crowd and shake hands with Tim Cook he would go to do one of his legendary keynotes

I think perhaps not. The microsim is the usual white, and doesn't have the NextG logo. It was issued by the Apple Store.

As for the 850Mhz band, Vodafone claims to have improved performance with it pushing their 3G units with money back guarantees. Their CS claimed that the iPhone would perform better which I found not to be the case, but the suburb itself is not the best location for any network.

Will test further later this month.

As for FB usage, it does chew quite a bit, but thanks to competition or the network matching with free FB usage, the data cap has been more reasonable.

It is an interesting competition, the networks are trying to match telstra's performance without the price. All I know is my phones mobile phone and data works brilliantly, had no dropouts so far. Telstra really go for the "It just works" thing that apple aims for. I think a lot of people find it appealing to have high end phones with really fast phones. iPhone+Telstra ain't a bad deal.... Even for $79 a month..

I guess we'll finally know if the TMZ stuff was real or not.

Here's some evidence of what's to come, advertised last month:

"The Field Design Engineer evaluates the latest iPad, iPhone and iPod hardware systems in the field. This includes very early evaluations of our Prototypes and hardware Systems on different wireless technologies. It includes running focused experiments in relationship to RF/OTA performance, acoustics, thermals, GPS systems etc... "

Make of it what you will.

"... And today we show u the iPhone 4S the best phone on the market. the iPhone 4 had an incredible year, well received from our customers and thats why we keep the design, its amazing no wait its MAGICAL and now even 0.00001 % lighter and u can use all your cases etc from the iphone 4 it all fits perfectly. Isnt it amazing?" now onto some tweaked graphics and app previews no one cares about

I know a guy in cupertino, his name is Rick Raname. I can't tell you what and where he works exactly within apple's organization. I tried pushing him in questions and he won't answer to anything for fear of losing his job.

So Apple please give him credit and a raise and a promotion because he is faithful and said nothing TO ME! I am the most obnoxious, pushy person you can ever meet.

The one thing he did say, is Apple will surprise the heck out of us all. They have been trying for so long to keep some things secret and somehow it always leaked. They are really pushing to keep the hush hush on this one.

So i can almost guarantee that it is not only going to be an iPhone 4S. He said that this is the biggest conceal job ever done by Tim Cook and Apple. One of the main reasons he was chosen by Steve to take over was his big belief in company secrets and discreetness. We can only blame Tim Cook for this one.

They have something very very special up there sleeves and have kept it so so quiet. Good job. It is not very easy in such a nosey world where people will pay for info and greedy people all over.

I have known this for the past 3 weeks and did not write anything on it. I see how many people need to know and are dying at not knowing. So since it is tomorrow i thought i would make everyone's life just a bit better for the next few hours.

BTW: The iPod Touch line is also getting a heck of a change.

Let's enjoy the ride!!

KK :D:):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

I really REALLY hope you're not full of ****. I actually believe this. It's about time apple came out with a really great press conference!
