Merry Christmas!

This is just like Christmas. So excited for the new iPhone even though I can't get one right now. Hope the iPhone 4S is not true. We need a bigger screen. Pack up your tents and start camping people:)

The biggest use of this would be in the car. You could actually use your phone and drive at the same time, without taken your eyes off the road.

When it comes to making calls, what can you do differently with Assistant than with the current Voice Control? I never use the Voice Control, so I am not even really familiar with that.

LOL @ Assistant being a major break through. There isn't that many people that want to talk to their phones in public and give it commands.

First, I don't think Assistant is going to be about giving commands so much as an intelligent interface to your phone. The iPhone is primarily designed for touch and voice input (calls, duh). The keyboard sort of works but for anything nuanced it can be a major pain. If you could interact with your phone and it would be able to understand more than "call Bob's mobile" it would be a pretty huge step.

Secondly, if you go back far enough you could say the same thing regarding people talking on their phones in public. Phones calls were much different before mobiles became big (and before that before long distance became cheap and before that...and so on).

I use Voice Control daily. I have a bluetooth kit in my motorcycle helmet. The voice control lets me do a lot of cool stuff. Change playlists, check the time, place phone calls when i pull over. It will be interesting to see what this assistant does.

If the new phone turns out to be a spec bump iPhone 4S I will have a very hard time upgrading my iPhone 4 unless the assistant feature is KILLER.

wonder if there will be a way to enable it on iPhone 4 through JB a la voice control on the iPhone 3G.

I hope they bring it to the iPad 2. At least I could play with it on that.

I think apple's successfully tricked us all. All this 4S hullabaloo the past few months is just Apple toying with our rumor reading minds as payback to the lost iPhone 4 that was found oh so long ago.

- You don't wait 16 months for just a speed bump.
- You don't let your iconic ceo step down and have you're replacement, which everyone in the tech industry will be harshly judging, launch your next, and most anticipated product being only a speed bump.
- You don't release iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 with a product named 4S.

Doubling the RAM, and upping the GPU by about 9x performance, plus faster network speeds and a new camera technically isn't "just a speed bump."

Sadly most people would be happy if they redesigned it, stamped "5" on it, and kept all the same innards (A5, 512-1GB, etc).

Btw, this is Apple. They can do whatever the hell they want, and people will still come.

If I understand right, it will read text messages and you can reply as well as control other functions of the phone ... maps and such.

Assistant is not voice control, it is a whole new interface to the device.

I'm so glad I am on the West Coast and have less time to agonize over what will happen tomorrow!
Can't wait for my new iPhone whatever it is!
(I'm on a 3GS):(

Assistant will only be cool if it's like HAL from 2001 Space Odyssey...

Btw, redesigned iPhone 5 tomorrow. You can take that to the bank.

Cool. Does it still have to be activated with the home button, or is there some other method?
Maybe I'll actually use it when I get my next iPhone. It isn't going to be available for the iPhone 4, correct?

Not to be a pedant, but everyone has the same amount of time left unless you are going to be conscious until the keynote (i.e. it is morning for you now).

I went to 2 best buys in the last two days and wasnt able to find an Apple TV in stock at either. Maybe they gave them all away in the promo with the old Macbook airs... but perhaps we're up for an upgrade there as well...

They haven't been EOL'ed so it is probably just the usual stock fluctuation.

I don't know ... I haven't used it. It is just my understanding of how it works.

I know that on my SGSII, I can turn on voice service and anytime I say Galaxy it knows to expect a command. I don't use it, but it's pretty cool.

any time I start a sentence with iPhone, she goes 'OMG shut up with that.'

shes on her crappy Droid Pro, but shes ok with it. She said she was willing to wait for the LTE version to come out, and she wants to wait until all the kinks get sorted out (she remembers antennagate, and shes not even into tech news).

I will be a good man and buy her iPhone 5 (ill pay up to $700). She just moved to Verizon too, so no contract update for her until next year..

i don't want my girl carrying around obsolete devices. I expect her to have the latest and greatest mobile phones, tech gadgets.

I feel so sorry for your girlfriend.

Or really, anyone that has to put up with you on a daily basis.

They also need to redesign it just to shut people up about the antenna. If it has the same form factor everyones just gonna be complaining about their cell reception when the thing comes out regardless if there's a problem or not.

Anyway, I bet those at Apple are just grinning thinking about how well they have kept this thing under wraps, and can't wait to hear Cook say up on stage "one more thing..."

I couldn't agree with you more. It just doesn't seem right that all we are getting is 4S.

Plus, this recent bombshell that WSJ dropped, of Sprint signing up for 8 million iPhones per year? I'm not sure how good of a businessman Hesse is, but goddamn, he has to know something about the new iPhone to make that bold decision!

Final guesses for tomorrow:

free 3gs with new contract
iphone 4 8GB $99
iphone 4S 16/32GB 199/299
- A5 processor, 1080p, NO 4G, 8MP Camera, Assistant only works w/4S

Still hoping for 3.7-4" iphone5 tomorrow but i guess the evidence is stacked against the idea for now. Probably iphone 5 mid-2012 with LTE, 4" screen... ugh

Call me skeptical, but i dun think Assistant will be a killer features in any way. Look at voice control, yes alot of ppl using it, but its a deciding factor, i'm dunno, at least not for me. It'll be interesting for disable ppl or say in car. If you use it in car, wouldnt it be better to pair with a bigger screen, especially using map.

If i'm not feeling well and i tell iphone, cure my fever, i might be interested, regardless of screen size.

There aren't too many surprises expected for iOS 5 tomorrow, as Apple offered an extensive preview of the next-generation mobile operating system at its Worldwide Developers Conference in early June.

Doubt if it should be characterized as an extensive preview. Ten new features done in about an hour. So six minutes of a brief overview of 10 out of 200 new features or 1/20th of newness was briefly discussed and demoed.

I'd rather characterize it as a summary of ten of the more cool things Apple thinks their fans will like. But extensive preview.... um, not so much.

If there is an iPhone 5, and they really want to keep it on the low, then that means they have yet to send anything to Foxconn. I'm sure we can all agree that Foxconn has as many holes in its security as swiss cheese. That seems to be where most of the rumors come from, and Apple knows this. If only top executives know about the iPhone 5, then keeping the rumor mill from turning is a rather simple job. Just a thought anyway, it's anyone's guess at this point. iPhone 4s to be released soon based on the leaks from Foxconn, with an iPhone 5 to be released in a month or two once Foxconn gets up to speed. That's my bet.

Not to over use metaphors, but that is like saying look at your typewriter, nothing more will ever come of a keyboard.
