But you'd be touching the screen. Like if you are holding it with one hand. I get you could do 2 handed in portrait mode... but usually in landscape mode, people grip it in a way where they'd be touching the screen.

It's probably why Apple still has large bezels on top and bottom (vs sides)

I own one too. Then, they'll figure out how to put it behind the screen :)

When I hold mine in landscape it is very similar to portrait, as in I grip it at an angle on the very edge rather than putting my whole thumb on the bezel. If it was even lighter than it is now I don't really seen an issue with cutting the bezels in half, or even a quarter. My thought is they are only there because they had to have a home button.

How about a report on who is supplying the battery for each device? I think that's a bigger issue currently.

I hope not!! How would you hold it?! They'd have to program some smart touch rejection if there are no bezels. Not to mention unless it's OLED, they'd need a bezel for the digitizer in an LCD set up

They do that already with the X, though not very well. I find myself trying to touch something in the upper left corner with the phone in my right hand and it's not registering. Turns out it's because I'm barely touching the screen with my right hand.

LG and Samsung = Android.
So while we all talk about how innovative Apple is, remember they rely on the rest of the industry to produce components.

I'm not saying it's bad, but the after being in the tech industry for 30 years, the industry is incestuous and makes strange bedfellows.
Lg and Samsung do not equal android Wym. They both make fridges tvs dishwashers along with android phones. They have different divisions that take care of apples orders

I really want Face ID on an iPad. But man, do I really not want to buy yet another smart keyboard. Cutting out the top and bottom bezels would be nice though, also the weight reduction plus ditching the home button would all be great.

I would buy a new smart cover form apple if they can add backlighting to it... :)

Which means Apple desn't want a repeat of productions issues late into the production phase.
Or maybe it's cheaper, better, or even just an additional supplier. We do know Apple likes to have multiple suppliers for each component.

Again, hard to know Apple's intentions, but it doesn't stop people from trying to act like they know what happened. Personally, I doubt the FaceID production issues were as much of a problem as media outlets reported.

with an OLED display = SOLD!

And yet, I'd bet HUGE there will be something else that is doubtful to meet production objectives implying great scarcity of the next round of iPhones. It's like a cookie cutter plan that is used- and works- every single year. If it's not this particular technology, there will simply be something else that will "be in short supply" per rumors starting to fly in about June-July.

the same way you do now ! the top and bot bezels can be shrink to the same level as it sides ones
Imagine the current 10.5" with the top/bot the same size as the side bezels

Historically, and besides FaceID Romeo and Juliet modules, the only major component supplies constraints were with the 5S TouchID sensor (Safire cover) and the Jet Black finish yields. Other than that, I don’t recall there being reported other component shortages in Apple’s manufacturing history with the iPhone.

So please stop saying or spewing component supplies are always an issue. Every year except for those two that I remember, Apple has had demand that overwhelmingly exceeded supply.

iPads have always had a robust, long lasting battery. It has a large enough form factor to allow a massively large battery. The Pro 12.9 inch has over 10000 mAh. My only complaint with my new Pro 12.9 is that it takes a LONG time to recharge it. That's an argument for replacing the lightning port with a USB C, which could easily accommodate fast charging.

If I had mine here I'd shoot a pic or two of how I generally hold mine, if it's not standing up with it's Smart Cover. I get what you're getting at, but it's honestly not a problem for me. Plus, Apple has crazy good false-touch rejection.

I'm skeptical on placing an image sensor, let alone something as high-tech as the Face ID setup, behind a screen. I feel like the fidelity would never be there. But then again, for every 50 pictures I take, maybe 1 is with the front camera.

I too am sold on Apple's implementation of OLED, but there's been several articles on MR saying that OLED on a screen that big isn't yet feasible.

One more caveat for me; I want a silicone case like Apple used to sell. They don't have them for the 10.5" now.

No, the 10.5 model was new last year and has a new design, whilst the 12.9 didn’ t get a new design.
The 12.9 needs it more , it is big and clumsy, and looks a bit outdated. The 10.5 looks and feels like a more modern design.
My guess for 2018 is:
10.5 inch ipad pro with updated internals.
12.9 inch with very small bezels, faceid, smaller footprint, or make the screen bigger than 12.9 in the same footprint/chassis as the current 12.9.

Next year will be the year they’ ll update the 10.5 design and perhaps even make a move to oled, (and wireless charging?) (and call it the ipad x?)

Or there will only one 11.3-12 inch pro version, that replaces both in 2019 with an oled screen.

I wish Apple would just consolidate the 10.5" and 12.9" iPad Pros into a single 11.5" to 11.9" model. It would have the same UI size as the iPad Pro 12.9" but at 3X resolution OLED with very slim bezels like the iPhone X so it would be nearly the same size as the current 10.5". Throw in 8GB RAM, a processor that benchmarks similar to the base spec Core i5-7500 found in the current 27" iMac, and an Apple Pencil 2 and even I might upgrade my 10.5" iPad Pro.
