Any idea where this is coming from? It is not related to the screen resolution/scaling as I tried all settings here.
Most likely it is, you're still driving a large additional display no matter what the resolution you select is & an earlier post in this thread talks a about lag using the 13" as well.

But is it possible that the new Intel graphic in the 13" Touchbar model does not have enough power for the 5k display? That would mean it is laggy for everybody (and non-fixable) using the 13" inch newest generation Macbook?!

Can anybody please confirm?

It is most crazy with Firefox..if I watch a HTML5 video (Youtube for instance) in Firefox with the screen attached, the fan noise goes up after 10 seconds and CPU load is very high. For me it looks like the complete Retina scaling is being done by the CPU and not the GPU?!

Other applications such as MS Outlook or Safari is better, but it still feels sluggish.

I don't experience lag, but I haven't tested with Firefox.

Hi pbecci,

Sorry to hear that! I sent mine in with the complaint described above. The repair "Service performed" is "Part replaced - mechanical". That sounds suspiciously like installing a shield for the router problem which I said was specifically not the issue. (I guess if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.)

In any case, it is supposed to arrive tomorrow so I will test it out and update this post.

Installed the reworked LG display. According to the repair report, 2 "gaskets" were replaced. I observed the volume control of the LG internal speakers was considerably smoother than before. I was able to adjust the volume up to 5 steps or so without driving me out of the room. A 1+ hour Skype completed successfully without disconnecting the attached USB drive, freezing the monitor or any other adverse issues. The display sleeps and wakes appropriately with the MacBook Pro. All-in-all, my issues seem to be resolved. I don't think that gaskets alone were responsible for all this (firmware upgrade?) but I guess it is possible.

Color me satisfied!

Firstly, what's the manufacturer date on the LG 5K display you're using (702 serial#/Feb 2017 or later models seem to fix many issues)?

Secondly, have you done an SMC reset (kind of obvious, but worth a try nonetheless)?

These may/may not be relevant to help with the issue.

Can I read the serial somewhere on the screen or with a system tool? I do not have the box close to me here :(

I just did an SMC reset but this did not fix it, the CPU load is still very high now even in idle and this is immediately fixed once the LG 5k is not attached anymore ;(

It's under the stand. Place the display flat on a surface and unclick the stand it just pops open, and you'll see it. AFAIR, System Info or other places don't give it, so you have to physically access it. (idea: take a photo for your own records, so you don't have to do it again in future! ;-)

Over the last 2-3 days, issues have become considerably worse. I've had constant wake from sleep crashes (to the point that the Mac won't start and requires a hard reboot), but even worse, the screen just turned off, restarted my Mac, and threw me into recovery mode (because it believed I couldn't access my keyboard to type my password and unlock the HD encryption, from what I can gather).

It's really sad because the screen is really nice to look at, but the monitor itself is currently terrible to use. I really don't have the time to keep going back and forth with a heavy monitor to an Apple Store (there's just the one Apple store in Berlin and it's always busy).

As for the wake from sleep crashes, I can definitely confirm from the crash reports that it's accelerated graphics driver related, and those should *hopefully* be fixed in a software update. For now I'll have to shutdown the Mac before unplugging it while the Mac is in clamshell mode and hope that works.

I have this exact issue on a regular basis.

It seems to happen 100% of the time if the MBP is asleep in clamshell mode connected to the 5K display, I unplug it, it stays asleep for some time, and then I plug it back in and try to wake it without it being woken in-between.

Anybody having just camera issues? I have the 5K (S/NO 702..) connected to 2016 15" MBP 2.9 i7 / Raedon Pro 460. Everything works perfectly but the webcam will not work properly. In Skype and photobooth it just displays black but the green indicator light comes on.

As @jmaluso said, there is a lot of information here! So, let's summarise the issues and bugs discovered so far, their present state of resolution, and whether they appear to be one offs, widespread, or design flaws.
  • Flickering when close to EM interference; fixed with hardware change
  • Metal stand will force MacBook Pro to sleep when in clamshell mode and in close proximity; not fixed
  • Sleep/wake issues; largely fixed in 10.12.3, but still persisting for some
  • Large stuck cursor; not fixed
  • Stupid volume scale; not fixed
  • Sluggish brightness adjustment; fixed in 10.12.4 beta
  • Unable to change brightness of more than one UltraFine display using the keyboard; not fixed
  • Unable to change brightness using Control+Brightness slider/button unless via the expanded Control Strip; not fixed
  • Non-functional ambient light sensor; not fixed
  • Slow downstream USB speeds with storage devices; not fixed
  • Slow downstream USB speeds with ethernet adapters; fixed with better Realtek drivers
  • Insufficient power output for 15" MacBook Pro (around 62W instead of 85W); not fixed
  • USB storage devices occasionally not re-mounting upon wake from sleep; not fixed
  • USB storage devices occasionally un-mounting during Time Machine backups; probably fixed
  • Skyrocketing CPU load and visual artefacts when monitor connected; probably fixed
  • Spinning disk USB storage devices stay powered-up when MacBook disconnected; not fixed
  • Drop-out of camera and microphone during Skype calls; not fixed
  • Kernel panics and spontaneous reboots; not fixed
Yeah, not a great performance from LG.

New issue: USB devices (not just storage) completely losing power source. I didn't notice until I saw my phone reach 1% battery. My Wacom tablet, Bose SoundLink Mini, iPhone and printer all lost power until I restarted.

For all these posts above...

You really need to list the first thee serial# digits on your posts before anyone can help further, as this helps to narrow down old (potentially unshielded / unfixed) displays from new (potentially shielded / fixed) displays.

Can you elaborate on this? My s/no starts with 702. Would that be shielded or unshielded?

The "612" that I received nearly two weeks ago is still running flawlessly and I couldn't be happier with the purchase. I have been using the display in clamshell/open mode, extensively, every day since I received it.

I have not reviewed all of the posts within this thread so forgive me if I'm not picking up on any trend- I am beginning to wonder if the vast majority of problems are experienced by individuals driving the display with a 2016 MBP?? Clearly, this would indicate hardware incompatibility..

BTW - I'm driving the display with a mid 2014 rMBP 13" (I7)

702 - as expected though (I only just received it), as it fit in with the shipping dates of those with affected 611/612 screens getting their replacements.

well not happy at all - returned my two 5K January 11th delivery for the shielding fix, both have been faultless... 13 days later I get both redelivered - wired them up again there to find one working normally and the other half a white screen and other half white and black... awesome....

rebooked in for Tuesday pickup for the faulty one... Well done LG for breaking my fully working monitor....

I suspect we're seeing the result of 3rd parties being involved in the retrofitting of the shielding.

I just tried my cameras on my dual 5K setup and both work just fine. These are 702 s/n models.

Also, I managed to get my audio working such that the left stereo channel comes out of the left display and the right channel comes out of the right display. I used the 'Audio Midi Setup' app to create a 'Multi-output Device' comprising both displays. I then turned off the left channel on the right display and vice versa to get a complete sound stage. Much better than only having audio from one or the other display. Also, this gives you quite fine control of the volume of the display so you can work around the LG volume issue. The sound quality with this setup is pretty good I'd say. Only problem I still need to work around is the fact you don't seem to get a master volume control for the multi-output device so you have to use the app-specific volume control such as the one in iTunes. This isn't so handy for system sounds etc. I'm sure there will be a solution. :)

Yep 2x LG 5K camera's work fine on each display, but switching back to the MBP one in FaceTime proved impossible without unplug replug one or both external displays.

I tried that audio thing too, but the lack of any level control (menubar OR sys prefs) made it untenable for me generally. How are you supposed to control volume when there isn't any?! (apart from inside the app you're using which is fiddly.)
I turned "Drift Control" on for both external LG's too, but doesn't seem to make much difference.

There is a Sierra update on the App Store all, and it seems to have improved the above greatly - still not smooth like it should be but definitely better. (I posted a bug report about this btw - so it seems they do listen!)

Mission control issues seem to be fixed now :)

Good to hear posting bugs get listened to!

Strange - I can switch freely between all 3 cameras without any issues.

Yeah I did say that the Midi app isn't the perfect solution but was just sharing my findings. There are apps which can given greater control such as the ones from Rogue Amoeba but I've not had time to look into all the options yet. The point I was making is that it is perfectly possible to control the output of both displays and at the same time to work around the non-linearity of the main volume control. It's just a case of refining that solution a bit either with third party apps or if necessary writing one myself. I am a programmer after all... :)

Drift control is, I believe, to allow for timing corrections between your various output devices. Depending on the devices in question you may have very little drift. However, I don't believe you are supposed to turn it on for all devices because one device is supposed to remain uncorrected as the reference source. I'd suggest reading the documentation on the app if you want more details on this.

Is it normal for the fans to crank up a lot using the 5k and 15inch MBP display together?

In my experience it depends what you're doing. Relatively static images seem okay but try running the dictionary screensaver and your MBP turns into a hovercraft!

I'm running two 5K displays plus MBP screen so that might make it worse for me. According to istat it's the GPU that's needing extra cooling which makes sense. It is pushing around 35 megapixels!

Good to know I guess I just didn't realise how much power is required to run this thing.
