Wow. A lot of info here...I haven't had a chance to read through it all yet. Anyone hear anything from LG about firmware updates coming soon? The audio volume issues are annoying as well as the USB-C hub disconnecting and not being reliable. Sorry if this was asked before.
this is a OS X issue, not an LG issue so its up to apple.

Try and imagine the late Steve Jobs working on the new MBP and the LG UltraFine 5K. Connection comes and goes, display flicker and go blank several times while he tries to prepare a memo for the board of directors.

Would he take it gracefully like :oops::rolleyes:

... or would he be more like :confused::mad:

As much as I try to avoid the "if Steve was here" bandwagon, I think we can assume if he was here the LG 5K wouldn't be.

Hmm, another stock purge?!

Wow you could be right. Canada now says pickup not available and 5-6 weeks shipping.

If they're purging stock, does this mean there are significant changes to the ones produced as of the fix?

I'm still on my return window but obviously don't want to wait 1.5 months without a monitor.

What a gong show this monitor turned out to be.

If I was you I would just buy one soon and if it's a 702 and a router directly behind it doesn't cause interference, keep it.

I say that because I have a feeling that even if you wait until March you might not get a 703 unit. Once Apple states 'in stock' on their website, it usually means they have a gigantic number of them sat in the warehouse (like, thousands)*. Will they sell thousands of an expensive, niche product, that's just had a lot of bad press, over the next few weeks (i.e. fast enough to replenish stock with March-manufacture units next month)? Probably not IMO.

Add the fact that they went from 3-5 business days to 6-8 weeks to 2-3 weeks to in stock and it seems the stock has already been purged of bad models as you suggested.

*For example, if you pick a product that it 'in stock' online and is also available for in-store pickup same-day, you can increase the quantity to 999 and see that the in-store availability switches to 'ships to store' but the online availability is still one business day, making me think there are 999+ in the warehouse.

Well despite the 5-6 week delay thing, I managed to get two 5K displays from the business team in Glasgow this afternoon. The serial numbers are 701... (Jan 2017) but so far they seem to be running just fine despite being less than 12 inches from my Time Capsule router. I'm going to test them out thoroughly over the next couple of weeks and if there are any signs of issues then I'll take them back obviously.

First impressions are very good. The weird bezel is just not noticeable in use and the image quality is fantastic. I'll probably say a bit more in the 5K owners thread once I have used them for a bit longer. Hopefully I'll be still saying nice things when that time comes... :)

As @jmaluso said, there is a lot of information here! So, let's summarise the issues and bugs discovered so far, their present state of resolution, and whether they appear to be one offs, widespread, or design flaws.
  • Flickering when close to EM interference; fixed with hardware change
  • Metal stand will force MacBook Pro to sleep when in clamshell mode and in close proximity; not fixed
  • Sleep/wake issues; largely fixed in 10.12.3, but still persisting for some
  • Large stuck cursor; not fixed
  • Stupid volume scale; not fixed
  • Sluggish brightness adjustment; fixed in 10.12.4 beta
  • Unable to change brightness of more than one UltraFine display using the keyboard; not fixed
  • Unable to change brightness using Control+Brightness slider/button unless via the expanded Control Strip; not fixed
  • Non-functional ambient light sensor; not fixed
  • Slow downstream USB speeds with storage devices; not fixed
  • Slow downstream USB speeds with ethernet adapters; fixed with better Realtek drivers
  • Insufficient power output for 15" MacBook Pro (around 62W instead of 85W); not fixed
  • USB storage devices occasionally not re-mounting upon wake from sleep; not fixed
  • USB storage devices occasionally un-mounting during Time Machine backups; probably fixed
  • Skyrocketing CPU load and visual artefacts when monitor connected; probably fixed
  • Spinning disk USB storage devices stay powered-up when MacBook disconnected; not fixed
  • Drop-out of camera and microphone during Skype calls; not fixed
  • Kernel panics and spontaneous reboots; not fixed
Yeah, not a great performance from LG.

FYI, today I was finally able to test with a Dell Precision 5510 laptop (has one TB3 port) and experienced the same reliability issues with the USB-C hub in the back of the monitor so that doesn't seem to be an Apple macOS issue.

Where is Apple's response in this cluster? Pathetic!

I have experienced all of this lol..

Not that funny actually..

LOL, this monitor is infested with bad omens. My replacement unit was just involved in a UPS car crash, so there is a delivery delay. With my luck the monitor was probably damaged. I sense yet another replacement sucker coming up. :(:(

At least Apple is starting to loose money with all of the returns, and Tim Cook hates to loose money, so I guess there is a silver lining to this fiasco.

I had flickering issues that I'm pretty sure is not related to EM interference. Monitor goes blank, then MBP screen too, then they both comes alive again. I have no WiFi router anywhere near.

Now my question is if LG is going to upgrade the monitors that were in the delivery pipeline and if they update the thousands of monitors that are already here in the US and do not perform the work at their factory -- what else will happen to the monitor when they do the upgrade under less than factory conditions?

Then will Apple be shipping refurbs from LG that aren't labeled as such?

And I'm not sure that I can wait 6 weeks.

Is there anything else that will work?

what's the resolution, how does it look?

It looks great. The Dell Precision 5510 is running Win 10 x64 Anniversary and displaying @ 4096x2304 resolution on the LG.
[doublepost=1486748932][/doublepost]Not sure this is helpful for anyone but I have been doing more testing on a Dell Precision 5510 laptop at my desk and it seems to have a similar speaker volume issue as when I tested in macOS. Not as bad but I have the volume down to level 4 out of 100 and when I bump it up to 6 or 8 it is definitely much louder than I feel like it should be at that low level. Also, the ambient light sensor is having a problem being detected correctly in Device Manager and the HD camera is very glitchy when testing using Zoom.

Really good post, Brookzy - it's very useful to have a summary like this.

Just as a data point for anyone considering this monitor, reading this thread it probably feels like they are a complete nightmare - I know I was really worried before mine arrived. However, apart from the non-functioning auto-brightness sensor I have precisely zero of the issues listed above. What I do have is the best monitor image I have ever seen. Everything works as advertised - I have a single cable connecting my 15" MBP which charges it as well as delivering the stunning 5k picture and connecting my LaCie 2TB backup drive which is taped to the back of the monitor. Who knows, maybe I've just been lucky, but when it works properly like mine does this is an absolute beast of a set up.

The list of issues is disturbing and affects many. But I must have shared luck with Owaint as I have had a great experience and, touch wood, no issues with how I use two LG 5K monitors with my 2016 15" MBP. I personally don't even have a problem with the styling of the monitor - it's not Apple, but it fits in fine.

But, just in case my luck changes or I ever set it up differently, as my 2nd monitor was delivered a week ago just before announcement of LG shielding improvement, I have today sent it for return to Apple. But I will certainly buy a new 2nd monitor in a few weeks time. For update of my first monitor I will see how easy it is to deal with LG.

This has to be made up, how can a metal stand cause that?
Because there is a magnet on the MacBook that puts it to sleep when you close the lid and it makes contact. Apparently when you get too close to the metal monitor stand it causes that same magnetic contact to close and put the MacBook to sleep.

That would make it a flaw in the MacBook rather than the monitor. I'd always been under the impression it was a proximity sensor the detected the lid had been closed, but interesting to know.

Yep, I have all those issues as well
I also don't get how to turn off the monitor completely/have an turn off timer after some time. I have a LED stripe connected to a USB adapter, and then the monitor. The light never turns out.
With the Mac LED 27 display, unplugging the MagSafe would turn the computer and display off. Or am I missing something?
