Yep, I have all those issues as well
I also don't get how to turn off the monitor completely/have an turn off timer after some time. I have a LED stripe connected to a USB adapter, and then the monitor. The light never turns out.
With the Mac LED 27 display, unplugging the MagSafe would turn the computer and display off. Or am I missing something?
The USB-C ports stay powered at all times so you can use it to charge devices without your MacBook connected. So it's a feature believe it or not! :p

I mentioned this in a previous post - one of the two LG 5k's I ordered arrived with a faulty Thunderbolt 3 cable - the MBP screen kept blinking in and out as if changing resolution and video on the LG 5k attached to the other end of the cable wouldn't work at all, even though the MBP was being charged by the TB3 cable. I thought it'd just be a case of swapping out the cable; I was wrong!...

My cable went faulty too. I finally connected the Belkin cable and now everything works. As you said, there doesn't seem to be any replacements available, but I suppose I'll either request a replacement (if that's an option) or just eat the cost and buy another one when I can.

So I finally solved my problems. (I was already about 3-4 meters away from WiFi router). It would freeze after disconnecting.

After then unplugging all adapters from the monitor (old apple keyboard with wire, USB-C ethernet adapter etc.) it would not freeze. So I started digging though the thread. After updating the realtek driver for the giganet ethernet adapter, it would work!! Speeds increased as well!

I'm happy!

Now waiting to hear back from LG Denmark about the shielding issue. Even though it's not a problem for me RIGHT NOW, I don't want to deal with it when I move to a house and might place WiFI router closer.

Hope this helps some people.

Edit: here is link http://www.realtek.com/downloads/do...=56&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false - Install it and reboot. Hope it helps others.

Ethernet speeds have improved as well. Now getting full Gbit.

As @jmaluso said, there is a lot of information here! So, let's summarise the issues and bugs discovered so far, their present state of resolution, and whether they appear to be one offs, widespread, or design flaws.
  • Flickering when close to EM interference; fixed with hardware change
  • Metal stand will force MacBook Pro to sleep when in clamshell mode and in close proximity; not fixed
  • Sleep/wake issues; largely fixed in 10.12.3, but still persisting for some
  • Large stuck cursor; fixed in 10.12.3
  • Stupid volume scale; not fixed
  • Sluggish brightness adjustment; fixed in 10.12.4 beta
  • Unable to change brightness of more than one UltraFine display using the keyboard; not fixed
  • UPatricia Trowles's invitation is waiting for your responsenable to change brightness using Control+Brightness slider/button unless via the expanded Control Strip; not fixed
  • Non-functional ambient light sensor; not fixed
  • Slow downstream USB speeds with storage devices; not fixed
  • Slow downstream USB speeds with ethernet adapters; fixed with better Realtek drivers
  • Insufficient power output for 15" MacBook Pro (around 62W instead of 85W); not fixed
  • USB storage devices occasionally not re-mounting upon wake from sleep; not fixed
  • USB storage devices occasionally un-mounting during Time Machine backups; probably fixed
  • Skyrocketing CPU load and visual artefacts when monitor connected; probably fixed
  • Spinning disk USB storage devices stay powered-up when MacBook disconnected; not fixed
  • Drop-out of camera and microphone during Skype calls; not fixed
  • Kernel panics and spontaneous reboots; not fixed
Yeah, not a great performance from LG.

The large stuck cursor is not fixed in 10.12.3, for me at least.

Thanks, original post edited.

No stuck cursor here. In fact, since I had some early sleep/wake issues that may or may not have been real have had no issues at all. Did move my router under my wooden desk and a bit further from the display (still likely under 4 feet). Also moved my MacBook Pro on the other side of the wooden divider now sitting upright in a Twelve South ArcBridge. Can see the difference in volume from one to two bars, but not uncomfortable. Have had no dropouts of peripherals (2TB SSD & 4 TB spinning disk as well as a printer and scanner), nor the camera/microphone. Only real gripe is continuity between iPhone and MacBook. Have to a lot of the time turn WIFI on and off both devices in order to make/take a calls from the MacBook, then calls would work OK until I left the house with the iPhone. I had that same issue though with my iMac. Using Affinity Photo and Luminar avoiding any of the Adobe products, so haven't seen any graphics issues or slowdown. Do a ton of photography work which is the only thing that taxes my GPU. Am looking forward to GPU switch fix in Safari when it hits general availability for mobile use otherwise not waiting on any fixes other that the monitor light sensor issue.

Otherwise everything is working pretty much per advertisement (well, not getting 10 hours of battery life). Am pretty happy and not so much having buyer's remorse on the monitor (sharpest display I have ever used), nor the should have waited for Kaby Lake on the laptop syndrome.

Agreed. As much as I wish Apple would've released their own display, it almost certainly wouldn't have the adjustment options of the LG, allowing me to have my 15" MacBook underneath display and have full view of both. Also, would've probably been at least $500 more. So I'm happy, too.

Well, it's update time. . .

I received a call back from my Apple contact today, and 2 things 1) The engineering team is still troubleshooting, and 2) they say that they are having some issues going through the capture data because of something that Creative Cloud is has going on.

So, they have asked me to format my machine yet again. This will be the 6th or 7th time that they have asked me to restore the machine. Apple originally asked me to change the size of the partition of my SSD, so we booted to Internet Recovery Mode, and went into the partition stuff there. . . No dice. When I clicked on the + sign, nothing happens. I don't get the little radio button to grab and resize. So that's off the table for some reason.

Anyway, with Apple asking me to wipe my machine again, we've hit a wall. I simply cannot backup my machine wipe it clean and then wait for it to crash. When I first started troubleshooting all of this with the senior advisor, I wiped the machine that day, and made a fresh capture. Then I was told to use the machine as normal. I asked if I should go ahead and install Creative Cloud, etc, and I was told yes.

I use this machine every day for work, and simply cannot stop what I am doing and format every time they change course, nor do I feel I should have to. I feel that if Apple wants to capture fresh data from my machine (because they seem to think it's an issue with the machine itself now), then it's time for them to replace it, and the engineers can have it.

I spoke with the gentleman from the executive liaison office a day before hearing back from the senior advisor and voiced my request for a replacement machine. He told me "the options that we have right now are to troubleshoot the machine." I then asked him what the other option was and was told "there are none." I then stated to him "If you are saying there are "options", that implies choice, and you aren't giving me one." It's troubleshoot or deal with a machine that doesn't work." After that, I got nothing but silence. He didn't have anything to say.

I don't think I'm out of line wanting my nearly $3000.00 worth of gear here to work. If they can't make it work, that's on Apple, not me, right? I have sent another email to Tim Cook expressing what I want to happen. At this point I want to return the 4k UltraFine and the 13" MacBook Pro, and get the base 15" instead. At least then I won't be tied to an external display, and I'll be able to run Illustrator and Photoshop without having to squint all day. I explained to Apple that the reason for buying the 13" was such that I could have a portable system when I needed it, and I could plug in an external display when at home. Two external displays later, I don't have a working setup. I've had the 13" for I don't know, 30 days maybe? Is what I'm asking for really off the cliff here?

I'd love to know your thoughts. Flame all you want if you'd like. But just remember that Phil Schiller got up on that stage and told all of us that this MacBook Pro was the best they have ever made, and that the 4k display was the best display for it. Unfortunately in my case, it has been the worst purchase in the 20 years I have been using Apple products.

Right now we only deploy the new 13" Touch Bar MacBook Pros on campus and I believe we are going to return all 40 of the LG 5K displays that we bought (we should have just bought 1 for testing but purchasing went wild because of the sale price) and go back to the Dell UltraSharp 27 InfinityEdge (U2717D) monitors that we had been using previously. I really wanted this solution to work for a cleaner all-in-one approach due to the monitor having the one cable charging, webcam, speakers, and USB-C for Ethernet all built-in to the back. But it looks like we will be going back to a docking station again. I am trying to get the department to pre-order TB3 docks from CalDigit, Elgato, and OWC so we can test them all and figure out the Pros/Cons of each.

It's a bummer you are having a difficult time troubleshooting with Apple but if I were you I would keep the portable 13" MacBook Pro and go with a different 27" display for now using a USB Type-C mDP adapter and wait on a docking solution for 1 cable charging/data/etc. But that's just me.

Good luck.

2016 15" MBP (11/17/2016) and LG 5K (1/16/2017) with 701.... serial number. macOS 10.12.3. I like and use the MBP keyboard and track pad so no external input devices.

Worked ok here until I added an Aukey USB 3.0 hub with included Ethernet interface plugged into the LG hub, along with a USB 3.0 connected HDD. After around 20 minutes of Skype video conference using LG camera, the USB drive disconnects, the camera and display freeze, there is a brief sound from the (unused) LG speakers. Only solution is reboot. This repeated twice during a call.

Removed the hub and USB-conected HDD from the LG and connected to MBP. No freezes or other problems. My guess is that there is kind of data rate saturation with the LG hub.

I have not had the router interference as my AirPort Extreme is around 8' away from the LG. I have found the MBP/LG combination sleeps and wakes without incident.

Since I am past the return window, my plan is to wait a few weeks to see if there is any movement from Apple or LG before sending it back for repair. Hopefully Apple hardware engineering will get involved with LG, if only to save the Apple reputation.

Been awhile since I've been on here, but quick update on freezing/sluggish/high kernal_task CPU issues when connected to the 5K. Found out the culprit was Macsfancontrol - I stopped using it and let the stock MacOS handle fan speeds, have not had any issues since.

My 5k just shipped 4 weeks earlier than expected. Ordered February 13 (after they pulled all stock). Was quoted March 31, now arriving March 1.

Getting ready for ordered monitors. Will move the Extreme base station that sits between our two rMBPs to the other side of the room. Then we can either use wifi between the Extreme and rMBPs or we can run Cat 6 cables from the Extreme to the back of the monitors and connect via a USB C to Ethernet adapter.

Anyone have any experience or even a guess as to which will provide a faster connection? Wifi adds no cost. Ethernet adds the costs for the cables and adapters. But a wired connection should be faster than wifi. What say ye?

I have a very strange phenomenon, I have a macbook pro 2016 connected to the 5k lg, and especially after using adobe photoshop and illustrator I have this weird image persistence that fades away over the Course of a few minutes, sometimes it even takes a restart to get rid of those ghost images.... :-/. the first one is the persistent image of the design... does anyone have same issues ??

cheers from Cologne

I thin some one on here already predicted this would happen with this very panel. That is ghosting / image retention.

So if it is not IR it is shielding if it is not shielding it is bad software. wow

There is just not a great display for the MacBook Pro right now in sizes over 21.5

- Maximum volume seems to get lower and lower each time I change source (eg: unplug headphone) until I have to restart.
- Facetime calls won't complete when connected to screen (have to try changing video and audio sources to macbook instead of using LG screen)

I had the same exact issue. Got my monitor back from LG and it is still failing. So upset!!!!!!

Hi pbecci,

Sorry to hear that! I sent mine in with the complaint described above. The repair "Service performed" is "Part replaced - mechanical". That sounds suspiciously like installing a shield for the router problem which I said was specifically not the issue. (I guess if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.)

In any case, it is supposed to arrive tomorrow so I will test it out and update this post.

Yeah, not a great performance from LG.

Ordered March 6th, delivered March 10th. Must be the new batches (that were supposed to be delivered by March 8th).
13" tMBP BTO 3.1Ghz with 16GB RAM and of course the Intel Iris 550. LG is set to native resolution. Running 10.12.3. Clamshell mode (the chances of me ever being able to power both screens smoothly is looking impossible, which makes the Touch Bar useless when I'm at my desk).

- Sleep wake issue: Still have it.
- Large stuck cursor: Still have it (but very rare / odd)
- Volume scale: Everyone has this, but the latest models have it too.
- Slow brightness adjustment: Still have it, but apparently fixed on 10.12.4

I imagine the 4 above points will eventually get resolved, but the one that bugs me the most and I guess it's not going to be resolved easily, are the choppy frame-rates. It goes just beyond window resizing, and it doesn't seem related to window opacity or translucency effects (or even other windowing applications such as HazeOver). It affects everything really - switching panels in Xcode, or as others have previously written, using editing tools in Lightroom. Reducing the resolution to the largest scale improves the performance a little, which leads me to believe these 13" just aren't made for 5K screens if you want great performance.

Not sure whether to wait it out, or get a refund. Other than the lag issue (since I assume the other 4 will get fixed with a software update), I have no issues with the monitor and don't mind its look, and picture quality. The light bleed is not an issue as I'm not using it for colour-accurate work.

Edit: When using a Guest account, macOS doesn't load all drivers. The resulting frame-rate is pretty atrocious: https://vid.me/HluQ. This gives me some slimmer of hope that updated Iris 550 drivers in a future macOS update *might* improve the situation.

Just to add from my couple of days testing, that my two new replacements (built: 702.../February 2017) work much better on the flicker issue, compared to the two original ones I had (built: 612.../December 2016), using 15" maxed-out tbMBP.

So anyone in pains with this issue, at least on this machine, should give newer produced models a try.

Fixes needed:
- Volume scale: is a fix for this coming from Apple and/or LG???
- Brightness adjustment: still ongoing (fixed in 10.12.4, possibly?), but what about if we have TWO 5K's and our MBP screen to control?? Currently only the left-hand screen can be controlled from the MBP touchbar, which is really stupid design.
- Sleep wake issue: if you mean restarts, then not so much (well, not so far on the new ones).

The curser issue I don't have.

I tried opening one of the original two LG 5K's up, to see the (lack of) shielding, but they are not easy to get into! :(

I am using the LG 5K with a MBP13 with Touchbar (highest config) and I have a very slow/sluggish mouse coursor when the display is connected with certain apps - it is extreme with Firefox (newest version).
As soon as Firefox is opened with 2-3 tabs, the mouse coursor is sluggish and it feels like the display is running on 25hz refresh rate. CPU load goes up a lot and the whole system feels one 10 years ago.
Unplug the monitor and use Firefox on the built-in screen: Everything is fast.

Any idea where this is coming from? It is not related to the screen resolution/scaling as I tried all settings here.

This is super annoying, allhtough I do not have much other issues (router is far away, only had the huge stuck mouse coursor for 3-4 times).
