Anybody noticing that their display(s) sometimes forget what brightness they were set to when waking from an extended period of sleep? Mine often seem to return to about five notches from maximum brightness after sleeping at exactly half brightness.

Yeah, sometimes they wake with max brightness or min brightness too. LG are just trolling us...o_O

After using this monitor for a few weeks, I'm still unsure how I feel about this monitor.

Here are some of the issues that I have:
  • By far the most annoying for me is the sound issue. At 1 notch it's too quiet and at 2 notches already too loud. As far as I can tell this affects everybody so I really can't understand how this made it into production or is still an issue. I'm glad that at least the microphone and camera seem to perform as I haven't had any complaints about it.
  • I've noticed some image retention, especially when waking up from sleep. It's not too bad and doesn't stay long. For some time, I thought it had to do with transparency being used on the lock screen due to the way it manifested itself, but it definitely seems to be image retention. I've disabled all transparency on Mac OS X
  • Random wake ups from sleep. This seems to be related to Power Nap. For some reason the monitor feels like it has to wake up sometimes. It doesn't seem to be 100% because sometimes I'll hear the attached USB drive start a TM backup and not wake up the monitor.
  • It seems to be a bit slower to wake up from sleep than my old Apple LED 27".
  • The current price is completely unjustified, glad I got it at the discounted price. The whole "We worked closely with LG" might have maybe justified the price, but it's clear from the present software issues that it can't have been that close. Worse is while I don't have direct evidence of this, reporting any issues quickly seems to turn into a buck passing contest between LG and Apple.
Issues that I thought were caused by the monitor but turned out not to be
  • I would often get into a situation where I couldn't log in without logging into the Mac without opening the lid and using Touch ID. This seems to be an issue with the Bluetooth stack rather than anything to with the monitor. Rebooting the MacBook always solves this. The trigger seems to be the MacBook losing the connection from the keyboard. It might recover, but the connection remains flakey. It has been pretty rare in any case.
Things that make this monitor a joy to use:
  • Picture quality is good, REALLY good. I always thought that the picture quality on my old 27" was good, but I have a strong suspicion I would have trouble going back to it now.
  • The one cable setup is nice. Especially coming from using a MacBook Air that required 3 cables to be plugged/unplugged. Needless to say I used to avoid unplugging my machine as much as possible. I no longer have to think about it.

Might be worth double checking that no notifications are set to appear on the lock screen.

In fairness, I can't find other 5K displays on the market that are comparable. They're usually at least as expensive, and lack most of the features that the LG has.

Another thing to bear in mind is that the LG display essentially contains a Thunderbolt 3 dock with 85W of power delivery*. Other companies still aren't shipping devices with such capability, four months later, and when they do they will be in the £250 region (and that will get you just a half-metre cable - add on another £50 for a full-length one!) - something included in the LG's price tag.

*In that it is turning Thunderbolt 3 into 5K video and a host of USB devices.

I forgot to add that at first I thought it might be notifications, but I've confirmed since then than it's not. Still running some tests to see if I can find the culprit. It seems "wake up from WiFi access" could be it although it's too early to tell.

This is a fair point. The Dell UltraSharp 27 Monitor with PremierColor - UP2716D is worth a tad less than I paid for the LG, but can probably be had for less like anything Dell. The question is whether the LG is worth the extra $400 for the one cable setup. My understanding was that only 1 port was Thunderbolt 3 on the LG, the rest are plain USB 3.0 with a USB-C interface.

I would argue that LG still aren't shipping a monitor with USB-Hub capability ;) I can't even reliably run a USB keyboard on mine.

From the comments in the MacRumors review thread for OWC's Thunderbolt 3 dock, it sounds like Apple/Intel certification might be a big part of why these Thunderbolt 3 docks aren't shipping too, not the companies themselves.

You just have to hope that in 12 months time, the Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C / UltraFine hiccups are a distant memory, and everything "just works".

Yep. Before I bought the LG 5K, I thought long and hard if I would get the monitor OR a $300 TB3 dock.

I went with the former and I couldn't be happier. I can enjoy 14M pixels with a built in dock.

Want to test if RF issue fixed. Is running a wifi router under it sufficient to show interference?

I almost considered not writing this, as I don't want to jinx my luck, but I got a new monitor yesterday and the USB-hub power issue seems to have been resolved.

I've been without a monitor since 10.12.5 Public Beta 3, so it might be something that has been resolved in the last two betas or it could be the new monitor.

Ah, I guess it was this post you were referring to: LG UltraFine 5K - Issues/bugs

What exactly was the nature of the problem you were previously seeing?

When I connected my powered on MBP to my monitor the USB-ports seemingly didn't get any power and didn't work. The way to resolve this was to either unplug and replug the USB-cable to the monitor-hub or restart the computer.

I connected and disconnected my computer a lot last night without being able to reproduce the issue, and now I've had it disconnected from my computer for about 12 hours and everything worked perfectly fine when reconnected to the monitor. With my previous monitor it was very easily reproducible.

Thanks for clarifying, and am I correct in saying you are now on public Beta 5 having previously been on Beta 3 when you last experienced the problem? I just upgraded to Beta 5 last night so I'll go see if my USB ports are behaving any better as I also had this problem and basically don't bother using the USB hubs as a result. I'll report back my findings.

Exactly. Sent my monitor back to Apple on the day Beta 4 was released.

Well, sadly despite running Beta 5, my G-Drive 2TB does not reliably reconnect to my MBP if I disconnect and reconnect my TB3 connection between MBP and LG 5K display while the hard drive remains connected to the display.

Kinda bizarrely, if I have the drive connected and I disconnect the TB3 cable between MBP and 5K, the hard drive spins down and then spins back up even though the TB3 cable is still disconnected. So clearly it is still drawing power from the 5K. Then when I reconnect the TB3 cable to the MBP, the hard drive again spins down and spins back up again and you can hear it seeking but the drive does not mount. The only way to reliably get it to mount is to disconnect the cable between hard drive and 5K and reconnect it.

So, maybe the monitor you just got back from LG has either got a different firmware on it or there are hardware differences.

If you get a moment, can you try again but firstly with the USB-C connector that is closest to the Thunderbolt 3 socket, and secondly with the USB-C connector furthest away from the Thunderbolt 3 socket, and see if you get different results? :)

Thanks for checking, would have been great if it was beta 5.

When I got home from work last night and connected my MBP to the display it didn't work at first and I thought I was back to start, but after unplugging and replugging the thunderbolt cable it started working again. This was never a solution with my previous monitor. I've connected the computer a few times today as well without any issues.

I'm starting to get fairly confident that something must be different with this monitor from the other one.

My monitor is running software version: 3.01,1.11,5234,3.00,0.1d

I already tried that actually and it didn't make any difference to the outcome.

Where did you get that software version from?

Interesting - I have similar things occurring on my two monitors but only on the USB-C port that is closest to the Thunderbolt 3 cable on both of them. The rest are fine.

Do you mean it was on the label on the back of the monitor or on the box or something?
It's shown in the LG Screen Manager crapware. Also possible to update it - if you have an update file to provide, which we don't. :p

I have installed beta 5 and the connectivity issues of the devices connected to the screen's hub also still persist.
