But is it possible that the new Intel graphic in the 13" Touchbar model does not have enough power for the 5k display? That would mean it is laggy for everybody (and non-fixable) using the 13" inch newest generation Macbook?!
Can anybody please confirm?
It is most crazy with Firefox..if I watch a HTML5 video (Youtube for instance) in Firefox with the screen attached, the fan noise goes up after 10 seconds and CPU load is very high. For me it looks like the complete Retina scaling is being done by the CPU and not the GPU?!
Other applications such as MS Outlook or Safari is better, but it still feels sluggish.
Hi all,
I just purchased this display. It worked perfectly for about 40 minutes then went blank. When plugged into my MacBook Pro, it doesn't charge or display a picture. If I plug it into another USB-C port on the display, that will charge my MacBook. I confirmed that this is the updated version with proper shielding.
Anyone have thoughts on what I could try to fix this? The display is absolutely amazing, I really want it to work properly.
It's working now though I presume, so it should last you just fine.So your issue sounds similar to mine. I had a brand new LG 5K Ultrafine with a defective Thunderbolt 3 port right out of the box. Whenever I tried connecting to my 2016 15" MBP TB, no picture, not only blank but no backlight turning on. I tried multiple TB3 cables from LG and the Apple Store (Belkin brand). Nothing worked.
Sent this crap back to LG, and they reported replacing an input electrical part and shipped it back. Not confident how long this thing will hold up.![]()
That sucks big ones, my sympathies.I don't think I'll buy another LG product. Their online support/service authorization is total garbage and now I have to take my 4K display to a third-party service center over 30 miles away in a very bad part of the city. The display was purchased in late January and now it has dust inside the screen. Terrible product and terrible service.
I did a quick search here and seems like I am the only person with this problem on the display.

(Not entirely related but I got a Mavic Pro in June with an issue out of the box with blur on the right hand side. Should have returned ASAP but was going on holiday and thought it might have been me not setting up right. Of course by the time I had time to sort I was outside the return window. DJI have been absolutely shocking in not understanding the issue/how long it takes/blaming me/not understanding the issue or even English tbh and no sign of it coming back yet. Long way of saying, makes me very aware of how good Apple's customer service is.)
Hi everyone, I have an update from LG support which looks a bit more encouraging. It took a bit of back and forwards before I got the response I was looking for but as is often the case, persistence pays off!
Firstly, the email address which seems to be most useful is cic.uk@lge.com (for the UK at least). I got to this by originally using the web site support email form thing and the first couple of times that resulted in a reply via an unmonitored email box but after I escalated the ticket I got a reply from this cic.uk address and that seems to be staffed by much more senior people who can actually give you a real answer. I'm not sure if you can initiate a ticket via this route but it's worth noting anyway.
As for the update, what I was told is as follows:
What we have been advised is that there is a planned upgrade to the monitor that will be done through the internet automatically in July for the sound issue you have advised us, sadly we not got any details on when in July or how they will be sending the update to the monitors, its possible it be done through the mac and be part of normally updates.
With regards to the brightness levels we have been advised the following, it has been translated form Korean to English, so will not flow right.
“It does not support to control brightness via sensor because macOS is not ready yet. It will be supported in new macOS (Maybe 3Q)”
What I get out of this is that this will also be fixed by a software update and most likely going through to the MacOS system.
So it's not entirely clear if this is a monitor firmware issue or macOS issue but it sounds to me like it might be a bit of both, certainly between the volume control bug and the auto-brightness bug. With Apple's WWDC conference starting in just over a week I expect the Apple engineering team are pretty busy so it's probably not the best time for 3rd parties to get technical support. Anyway, the best bit for me is that it does appear that LG are still actively supporting the display so either way there is hope!
These are the main issues that irritate me just now but it may also be that other bugs will be fixed in the same timescale.
I hope this is of interest.
Cheers,
Craig.
What about the ethernet connection bug? Most times a '16 MBP is connected to an LG 5K (with a USB-C ethernet connection) does not get the connection established. It requires unplugging/replugging the cable several times to make it work.
I’ve never heard of this issue to be honest but I have just become aware that there is a firmware update available via the LG Screen Manager program and there are encouraging reports that it resolves volume level issues, startup speed issues and USB connection reliability issues. I suggest you get yourself updated and see if that fixes your problem.

Anyone else get this when updating MacBook 2016 to 10.12.6?

Just installed macOS 10.12.6 Update and this is the first thing that comes up after logging in. I do have the LG Screen Manager installed previously but cannot test due to being at work - just wondered if this fixes wake from sleep brightness issues?
[doublepost=1500541272][/doublepost]Interesting to see there is a jump in the software from v1.98 to v2.06, i've not had an update since the Ultrafine's initial release... high hopes for this evening - it is just the brightness from wake that drives me nuts, spend time calibrating both and then wakes up to become dimmed on just one monitor... Volume incremental is naff, but can live with that.

I just found this thread. I've been through 3 of these LG 5K's ... I tried so hard to make them work but they all had serious issues. And even after being burnt 3x, I still find myself wanting another ... think maybe I should look into the 5K iMac until Apple makes their own display, LG is trash, and I keep having to pull myself from trying ONE more ... haha.
I've been using my two Ultrafine 5Ks for many months now and am very happy with them. The latest software update fixes a few software issues to make the experience even better. Sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience, it's a gorgeous display to use as I and many others do every day.
ps. Don't be surprised if LG are heavily involved in the Apple Pro display and don't be surprised if it's much more expensive than the ultrafine 5K.
The LG display itself is beautiful, why I kept trying .... but their warranty is awful, why not cross ship a new unit vs repairing parts?, and the quality is obviously awful, look at the reviews .... the price would be great ... if it was Apple at least you could buy a 3yr warranty and have a competent support department.
Fortunately I've not had to deal wth LG's service department other than when asking them for an update on when we might expect a firmware upgrade and they did at least come back with the answer to that at the time after a bit of persistence from me. I also had no trouble exchanging my original displays through Apple after the WiFi interference issue was discovered. This was even though I was well outside the 14 day return period.
As for quality, I honestly think they are pretty good in that department. The matte black plastic is understated and I actually prefer that to the previous generation of Apple branded Thunderbolt Display. It's like having a black bezel around an iPhone, it doesn't distract from the picture which is as it should be IMO. The rear of the display is clean and uncluttered, I find the stand to be perfectly sturdy and easy to adjust and I love the lack of buttons and flashing lights like you tend to get with most displays or TVs. Even the LG logo is nice and subtle unlike the typical Dell logos.
But best of all is the image which is stunning and matches the new MacBook Pro display really well.
