Just got an LG for my 2016 tbMBP...

All good in Sierra, but when I boot into Windows 10 Bootcamp, the display is really low-res.

I've tried tinkering with AMD and Windows settings but nothing changes.

Anyone else had this issue or can help?

Plug in the display only once Windows has booted. If you put it in to extended desktop (as opposed to mirrored) mode you should be able to set the resolution to 4K. It is unreliable though and you have to do it each time you plug the display in (at least in my experience).

Thanks alot for replying, Brookzy ...will give that a go!

My Monitor is still with LG. However, there is one interesting thing I as able to discover while it was away. I noticed the monitor on my MBP briefly come on, stay on for a few seconds and go back to sleep, so it looks like this behavior has nothing to do with the LG Monitor. What's interesting is that I have all the Powernap features off, so in theory it should not happen.

I have all these features turned off, and the power manager logs still show wake-ups every 2 hours. I think the only way to stop this is to actually shut down rather than sleep.

It's probably fine for Powernap to wake itself up ever 2 hours to check whether it should do anything or not, so that probably uses very little power and might be by design, however the monitor should definitely not be woken up.

haven't checked this thread in a while. is it just me or the volume is fixed with the latest OS update?

When I plug in the Ultrafine AFTER I've booted into Bootcamp, I get the message on Windows 10, 'USB Device not recognised'.

I take it everyone else can use it in Bootcamp? Any advice to get it working, gratefully received.

I get that message too, but if you follow the steps I mentioned, you can get it to work at 4K.

Ah, you mean ignore that message and set res in Extended Desktop on the Macbook anyway? Ta!

EDIT: Had to manually reinstall AMD drivers and it worked.

Im facing an issue with my LG UltraFine 5k which i bought on the 12th of January, the issue is the Pixel flickering on the entire right half of the display (It's like random pixels are flashing red, green, blue and white. Mostly noticeable on black backgrounds.) and it is continuous and it is been happing over a month now. I attached a picture of it, does any one faced this issue or have an idea how to fix it. I already bought a new thunderbolt 3 cable and try it instated of the one came with the display but no changes.

Seems unlikely it would be the cable. The fact that is only happening on half of the screen might point to a problem with the graphics card since 2 streams are being sent. Is there any way you can test on a different monitor?

Try some testing on other systems if possible.
Send for fixing if still occurring.

I tried another monitor a Samsung through HDMI Cable and it's work just fine.

Thanks for mentioning that i tried to connect my brother's MacBook 15 inch w/ touch bar and still the flickering is going on. seems the problem with my monitor, i will contact LG support to sort this matter.

I sent my monitor for service because of a serious image retention problem on May, 22. Today a LG representative said that they would get a "detail" to fix my monitor in August. I will never buy anything from LG again.

Still waiting for mine. Sent mine on the Friday 26th of May. I'm expecting to receive the same message.

I know it's been out a while, but I finally saw it in person at the Apple store. It's easily the worst-constructed, most out of place item on display. I wanted to like it, was predisposed to like it, but ended up hating it. I tried adjusting it up and down and it wobbled and continued to vibrate. You can actually grab the screen and rotate it slightly like a steering wheel. The one I looked at wasn't perfectly level and the plastic had some give to it when you would grab the sides to adjust it. It felt very cheap. I can't imagine replacing my 5k iMac with one of these, no matter the quality of the panel.

Wow. They still have it? Jesus... I'm so over this monitor, it's garbage. Too many issues... I'm now also having really bad image retention (like 1-2 minutes and something sticks). I probably shouldn't even send it back in again if it's going to take that long... just gonna sell it.

That and if you want to connect anything else to this monitor that doesn't have TB3 output, it's a pain in the ass.

So. I've been reading the back and forth on MacRumors, as well as the reviews on the apple.com site.

I want to buy a larger 27" dual monitor setup for my soon-to-arrive 2017 MBPTB. I don't plan to buy monitors too often - so want something that will last. It seems the LG UltraFine 5K Display has been improved in terms of the wifi issue... But... SHOULD i BUY?

It seems most that take the time to write in are complaining, and the feedback looks dire. But, what other 5k options do we have? None. 4k/27" looks better with Dell/HP/Lenovo... But...

These monitors in theory were okay, but after weeks of horrible image retention I think I may contact Apple to see if they can just give store credit or something because these are unacceptable for the price they charge and the lack of quality control. One display did not have image retention for the first few weeks, then all of a sudden you keep one thing open and it's stuck. Not a professional grade panel at all.

Hi all,

So my 2nd LG 5K Ultrafine display replacement unit (manufactured Feb 2017) is DOA right out of the box.

Originally, I ordered my 1st unit in January (it turned out to be a December 2016 build), and it worked beautifully with my 2016 15" MBP TB. Then I sent it for return/replacement within the 14 day Apple policy because of the wifi interference. That's about when Apple pulled all of these 5K out of their stores for the RF shielding fix. My 2nd replacement unit arrived in March, and I didn't get around to opening it until yesterday. That was a mistake.

CRAP, this 5K display won't even display anything, no backlight, no detection on my MBP's display preferences. Stupid LG design team didn't put any power indicator light or OSD or buttons on this display so I can't even tell if it's powered on or not. Either the TB3 cable or monitor or both are defective. I bought a Belkin TB3 $30 cable at Apple to hook up between this display and my MBP, and still nothing works on the monitor.

Going to call LG again and ask for the prepaid return label to kick this crap back to them. How can the 2017 replacement unit be worse than the first Dec 2016 build?

Hey guys.. I'm just wondering if anybody has had the issue I'm having with mine.. no need to watch the whole video but just the first 5 seconds will show you what I'm experiencing -

I'm a little frustrated because I actually was not having this issue until the 10.12.5 update. That leads me to believe it is software related. What happens is now when I leave the computer for a while and come back.. all three screens are going bonkers. (built in display included). Even after a restart the LG's won't always work right. I was going to hit Apple up this weekend but where I live the earliest appointment isn't even until Monday (and it's friday night now) so not going to make it this weekend.

I've had so many problems with this computer. At first it was kind of fun being an early adopter and I even made videos about how just running time machine would cause it to crash. However - this many months down the road and still having these type of issues I'm actually really tired of it. Just wondering if anybody else has had this same exact issue and has a fix and/or suggestions.

Thanks!

Just a thought: Have you tried power-cycling the displays (unplug them from power)? I've had weird problems in the past with my Thunderbolt display that could only be solved by unplugging it (which is weird to think you have to do that for a display).

Also, do you have the same issues when running with only one of the displays active?

Sadly it's the only 5K option that also supports full charging (87w). But even then, I don't recommend it.

At this point I'm just trying to break even and get rid of this POS, and just get a 4k display. I just put another ticket in to LG but I dunno if I want to send it in to them again, in fear of not getting it back for months.

It's really ****** that this thing was marketed to professionals, and it's anything but. Super unreliable, and the image retention makes it terrible to use for any photo/video/design work.
