Are the 2013 MBP models even compatible with the Ultrafine 5k? IIRC, models earlier than 2016 can only drive the display in 4k, 60hz, and compatibility cuts off at 2014. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT207448

That's correct in the sense that with the 2013 MBP you have to use a ThunderBolt 2 to ThunderBolt 3 adapter, which means that the video signa tops at 4K. I remember reading reports of people saying that there were hints that the computer rendered the video at 5k, scaled it down to 4k for ThunderBolt 2 transportation, and the monitor scaled it back to 5K. I am not sure what process is being done, but things looked not bad at all in Sierra. Much better than on a non-retina screen anyway. It will have to do; I'm not upgrading the computer until one with 32 GB of ram is offered.

Anyhow, your question was if the MBP 2103 are compatible with this screen. Officially, I don't think Apple ever pretended that this setup is supported. But it worked ok in Sierra - with the resoluttion limitation. USB hub, webcam, microphone and speakers work too.

I launched SwitchResX and saw that the LG was still set to use Billions of Colors. Selecting Millions of Colors seems to bring back screen content on the LG.

Edit: corrected my mention that this setup is "compatible" to "it worked but is not officially supported".

I had problems with Skype on the new LG 5k. after a few minutes the usb-hub of the display crashed and i lost contact with the webcam of the display. This is solved when i disconnected the ethernet wired internet that I had connected to the screen and used the wifi. Seams like it was to much traffic to and from the screen or something similar. With Wifi Skype is fine.

I use my MacBook Pro (2016, 15") in clamshell mode when connected to my UltraFine 5K. (The monitor's firmware is up-to-date.)

Everything has been working perfectly for the last few months until I updated to macOS High Sierra this week. Now, I'm experiencing the sleep/wake bug again. (I used to have that problem before, I think, the 10.12.4 update.) First, I tried putting the MBP to sleep before disconnecting the monitor and, when I woke it up, it was frozen and I had to restart it. Today, I opened the lid first and the MBP screen went solid red while the 5K was garbled and the MBP was frozen.

Is anyone seeing this?

I just came on to post this!!!

same for me... everything up to date.

I am also getting crashes in FCP X up to date.

Typically iOS I don't update to the new full release for a couple of months and at least one .1 update. MacOS I don't do at all on my main machine until near the next release, and on secondary machines not until 4-6 months later.

Hate to say it, as I feel your pain. But this is the very reason not to install completely new OS's straight after their release.

Contrary to what I thought, neither the monitor randomly waking up (probably not the fault of the monitor) and the brightness setting resetting itself to 100% issues have been resolved. I get the feeling that the brightness setting might reset itself to 100% after a reboot.

Well, it's been about 2 months since I got my monitor back from LG and I'm seeing signs of image retention again:(

This happened right after I updated to High Sierra yesterday. I believe whatever is in the latest os, it didn't contain the patch of the previous os. Will have no choice but to wait for another os update.

well I have found a massive bug with LG monitor...
15 inch MBP 2016
High Sierra
10.3.4 FCP

Never had this problem with 10.3 FCP and Sierra....

Computer functions normally until I try and use FCP...

Open FCP with Laptop open, 2xLG connected = FCP loads and functions normally
Open FCP with 2xLG connected = FCP immediate crash
Open FCP with Left LG connected = FCP immediate crash
Open FCP with Laptop open, Right LG connected = FCP loads and functions normally
Open FCP with Laptop open, Left LG connected = FCP loads and functions normally

Problem is with the laptop open I can not use the two LG for FCP

So right now if - Open FCP with Laptop open, 2xLG connected then do the import etc then I can close the Laptop then it works fine.
If I - Open FCP with Laptop open, 2xLG connected then close the Laptop and do the import then it crashes...

These are monitors with nothing attached... tried it with and without my usual stuff on the monitor hubs and no real difference....

has anyone else found this??? anyone any ideas???

Nothing here :(

Please, if anyone gets an update notice, please grab the update file before updating yourself! THere are dozens of us that would really appreciate it! ;)

"Sponsored" post, but...

So anyone seeing newer Monitor Software Version than "3.04,1.13,5237,3.04,0.1e"?

These damn monitors are the biggest POS I've ever had the displeasure of buying. What's more frustrating is that I don't know if it's an issue on LG's side or Apple's. I had uninstalled Screen Manager a couple weeks back thinking it's the cause of my sleep/wake issues. Turned out that's NOT the case and I re-installed. Went to check the version and I'm now on "3.04,1.13,5237,3.04,0.1e", but never got a prompt to update the software. I think it may have updated the version on its own without so much as a prompt letting me know it's updating it or has updated it.

Nope... nothing new here. This section make me think it is just a regurgitated press release from the last update. Because that volume control issue was fixed as part of it.

The most notable upgrade comes to the display’s volume control. The speakers are already controlled from your MacBook or iMac, meaning you don’t have to mess with physical buttons on the monitor itself, but new software now fine-tunes the volume curve, making possible more uniform, specific adjustments.

Not quite sure if this is the cause, but one thing I've noticed is that my overall CPU has always been hovering around 20% utilized for a long while. Never really thought about it as I assumed it's just the cost of all the apps I have running. Today I noticed my console logs filled with these:

error 18:55:04.869287 -0500 com.apple.AmbientDisplayAgent Invalid display 0x04280c02

I went to check Activity Monitor and sure enough com.apple.AmbientDisplayAgent was chewing up ~80% CPU (one core). Once I killed that process my overall CPU dropped to ~5% and I noticed the Night Shift adjustment kick in immediately (another thing I hadn't noticed as I'm always working in a well lit room).

Curious if this has been the cause of all the hang ups when plugging in/out the 5Ks. Would make sense as the service may be trying to connect to the ambient light sensor of the 5K, which we all know isn't functioning (yet).

Just a theory.

My monitor is still on 3.01 and the utility says my 5k is up to date. No firmware to download from the website. All this app seems to do is use 1 GB of memory (seriously?!) for no damn reason.

Have you tried to remove the app using AppCleaner? Once it's gone try re-installing. I'm running the app now (no 5K connected though) and it's only using ~270MB of memory.

Hello everyone, I am still on 3.01,1.11,5234,3.00,0.1d on my 5K with a mbp TB 15 2016 on 10.13. Anyone know of a way to force update it?

No. But try reading the post directly above yours, then come back and tell other users in this thread if it worked.

Yes I did, I also used a vpn to check if it was a region thing, but no luck. I read somewhere that LG might be having issues with distributing the update but it might be wrong.

Recently rolled over to 10.13.1 and now notice a pulsing on my LG5k. Currently with two displays and using MBP in clamshell mode. Monitors both using 3.01 firmware (no notice of upgrade ability). Anyone else experience this?
