I've since returned both, since I just didn't want to deal with the whole old/new issue right now. But from my limited use, it would be unfortunate if the model on the left was in fact the 'updated' design. That sensor nub is quite weird on its own. When surrounded by padding (model on right in picture) it levels out that whole area, such that when the phone is in place, it doesn't have the strange 'protruding' look. I think it may also help prevent the rings since the push the plastic away from the screen a bit. But if LP did remove the padding, I can only assume they had a reason.

And if in fact the model on the right is newer, it's very strange that so many colored models don't have it.

Either way, I may just order direct from Lifeproof and see how it goes. Or wait a while and try again from Best Buy.

I don't think I've ever had quite this experience with a phone case before :eek:

Say look at this video, starting at the 3 min mark. What do you think? Is he blowing smoke? Is it the fake life proof or was it just an earlier model. He seems to say the 3 of us have the newer one.

UPDATE: looking at a few other video reviews, all are saying the one I have is real, and the one with the extra black material around the earpiece at the top of the front section is fake, or at least an old version. Other way to tell is the size of the back window. So the one on the left, in the photo a few post up is real, and also the one with the higher serial number. ( I suppose if your are going to fake the case, fake the serial too. One way to tell if you can register the case with life proof. I was able to do that successfully with my blue one).

My blue is like the one in the left, which has the higher serial number and this agrees with 4 videos I've seen on YouTube that say its the latest model.

The one on the left is the newer model, but the one on the right isn't necessarily fake. That's how the 1st batch that came out of LifeProof looked like, I know, I had one direct from LifeProof It had that awful cushion on the top which made the screen bulge out.
 
my biggest problem right is all the ripples in the screen. I mean it bulges out and is so loose on the front its ridiculous. Is this normal or should I replace?

Thank you for jumping in. If I read your very 1st post in this long thread, I would have seen that.

That cleared is up for me. There may be fakes out there, but it appears the one on the right is just an old version for the iPhone 5.

I find my blue LifeProof very useful, but I don't use it everyday. Lightweight and does the job.

I weight the LifeProof as you did and got 1.06oz

For comparison to some popular cases, to show how light this case is:

LifeProof Fre 1.06 oz
Slim Armour 1.13 oz
Grip Candy Sheer 0.78 oz
Poetic Atmosphere 0.71 oz
SwitchEasy Tones 0.67 oz.

Funny. We've got one person saying the one on the left is newer, another saying the one on the right is newer. Classic :)

I will say that when trying to two versions I had, the one with just the nub had the annoying bulge (to me). The other didn't bulge at all - just appeared that the phone was slightly further from the outer screen.

Heheh. Just go back to the 1st page of this thread where I post pics of the inside of the case, it's identical to the one on the right minus the color with the awful foam piece around the earpiece.
 
I see. Interesting. At least I now understand the nub. When they first made these, the foam leveled it out. Now that it is alone, it sure looks funny. And creates a funny bulge on the outside. It was so obvious it could not have been the original design - and sure enough it wasn't :)

the reason i got rid of my 4s one, looks like the 5 is no better. Get a refund.

My brother has one for his 4S. The difference is disappointing. His is perfectly flat and looks the way it should as opposed to my wavy loose screen with newton rings
 
I can tell y'all that after a couple recent iPhone 5 lifeproof case replacements, they have made minor improvements.

1. The screen is indented or concave shaped . . seems to have better responsiveness

2. The back cover plastic "riser" things are taller. The first one I had was having sound quality issues, and I'm guessing a taller riser should help that by providing tighter fit. I haven't been able to test it yet.

All of these cases were purchased/replaced after March 2013
 
so just got off the phone with Lifeproof. First off, I purchased this at Bestbuy this past Saturday and told them that. Lifeproof said that doesn't matter "Lifeproof will cover the warranty, etc." Posted that because I seen someone in an earlier post that said lifeproof wouldn't cover the claim if you didn't buy it directly from them, which is false.

Next, I told her I had the bulge in the front and the sound wasn't really good. She said this is a defect and they have had this issue in the past and that she was sending me a brand new updated model in the mail. She asked for the serial # on both sides of the case to ensure I had it, as well as what "model/version" I had.

I will post pics once I receive the new case to show if there is any difference between my current model and the "updated" model.


Btw. While I was on hold a message was played over the phone that said LifeProof is now a proud member of the Otterbox family, so I asked the Customer Service Rep and she confirmed that LifeProof was bought out by Otterbox. This happened on May 22 of this year. Sorry if everyone knew, just posted in case

I dunno about you but this new LP case is going to be wicked if it's actually true. It's available for preorder at bestbuy. It's an iPhone 5 LifeProof nüüd Fr case. It has the clear back and a touch through screen (no plastic screen on front) like the iPad LifeProof case. I hope its true cause this case will trump the other all proof cases out there.

instead of buying the Nuud case, just simply take a razor blade and cut off your plastic screen protector and bam you have yourself a new case!

be sure to post pictures..lol

well crap.. Since I have only had my case for 5 days, I almost want to see how the nuud is now and maybe swap it out for that, but I don't see any information it yet since it was just announced today. I would love to see a video review before it comes out
 
If its anything like the iPad nüüd, it's gunna rock. I have the one for the iPad same idea with no screen and it works great.
 
How to identify the newest revision

Can someone please help me? I Just got a replacement black fre case for my iPhone 5 and The manual says on the back that it is version 1.0. What are the differences? I also noticed some life proof cases now include a manual in a booklet form. thanks

It has no screen protector, hence the "nuud" name.

Agreed my ipad nuud case is awesome. Works great to entertain the kids in the pool, when we give them baths.
