What actually IS the baseband firmware?

By keeping the old baseband firmware (and the ability to unlock) are you missing out on any bug fixes in the NEW baseband firmware? Other then patching exploits are there any useful fixes in the updated baseband?

Thanks.

Baseband/Modem Firmware is the program stored on the phone's modem chip that handles all of the telecom services. As far as I know, there are no problems with any version of the baseband and all changes have been solely to prevent unlocking. Certainly many people are still running 05.13.04 and earlier with no issues.

You can't upgrade to 4.1 and then go back to 4.0.2 unless you have shsh stored. You also can't jb on 4.0.2 you would have to upgrade to 4.1 then jb.

And no there are no benefits to baseband updates they just patch the ability to use unlocks.

i dont see why you can't jailbreak on 4.0.2? its suppose to jailbreak 4.0 - 4.1, correct? and if you were to jailbreak and hit the "make my life easier" would that still be in affect even thought apple stopped the signing way before? so that you can't restore to the current or previous versions.

and if you were to update to 4.1 you can still unlock using ultrasn0w and the old 4.0.2 baseband correct?

Yeah, all the talk about the shatter exploit being for A4 devices (iPhone 4, etc) - and all those other jailbreaks work best with older devices (3G, old bootrom 3GS), I was beginning to get real sad that I was stuck with an "unsupported" New Bootrom 3GS.

limera1n has been great. geohot said it was for "ALL" devices, and then limera1n.com gets updated with support for "New Bootrom" 3GS phones.

I downloaded limera1n, ran it, and my 3GS was jailbroken with 4.1 in no time (literally less than 1 minute). I quickly got all my favorite apps (SBSettings, five icon dock/task switcher, NoSpot, etc), enabled tethering again, and started emailing my friends with links to limera1n.com.

One friend I have just got a new iPhone a few weeks back - and it came with 4.0.2 on it, so he's been waiting for a jailbreak.

I really don't care if geohot 1-upped some A4-only jailbreak. I mean, as soon as I get an A4 device, then I may care if I find out he caused Apple to patch something they wouldn't have if he didn't release his jailbreak.

geohot credited comex on the limera1n page. There is so much drama in the jailbreak world...

Geohot's limera1n exploit is already known to Apple and has been patched in later versions. But Apple hasn't released a patch for it in iOS 4.1. They might with 4.2 but that's another story. I think most if not all of us (with any kind of iDevice) are running iOS 4.1 or iOS 3.2.2 for iPad people.

As far as i know, you can jailbreak at 4.0.2 using limera1n. But if you don't have saved SHSH for 4.0.2, you cannot restore to 4.0.2 since Apple is no longer signing it.

If you upgrade to 4.1 without using either TinyUmbrella or PwnageTool to preserve your baseband, you cannot unlock using ultrasn0w.

I thought Geohot said it's unpatachable, at least until they do a hardware revision.

Why does that matter? 4.1 brings a lot of new features to the table. 4.0.2 was just a couple of bug fixes.

Yes you can unlock with ultrasn0w and baseband 01.59.00. Not sure if 4.0.2 has the same baseband but if it says 01.59.00, it should work.

okay i understand now, but another question is : ONCE i jailbreak my iphone thats on 4.0.2 right NOW, can i still hit the "make my life easier" button on cydia which saves your SHSH blobs and restore it to 4.0.2 some other time? or i wont even have that button on cydia or i do but if i were to hit the button it wouldn't matter?

You can only save SHSH for versions of the firmware that Apple is still signing. Once you can't restore to it, it's too late to get it. If you jailbreak now and hit "Make My Life Easier" in Cydia, you will get your 4.1 SHSH on file and your ECID will stored so that all future versions will be automatically stored for you as they are released.

Excuse my ignorance, so what does that mean exactly?

Who would release such a patch? Apple?

And if so, what would it do if it changed untethered to tethered?

Your jailbreak won't "change from untethered to tethered." It just means that you won't be able to use this version of the tool if you upgrade to a newer version of iOS (i.e., 4.2). You will have to wait until a new version was created using yet another userland exploit to untether the jailbreak.

In other words, it won't be like the iPhone 3G, which the same software has been able to jailbreak since 2.0 days with only minor updates.

so if i hit the SHSH blobs saved button, ill have 4.1 saved and all the future firmwares as well?

Afaik you are going to have to jb 4.1 not 4.0.2 so unless you saved your shsh u won't be able to go back after you upgrade and jb. Clicking make my life easier just saves shsh blobs on sauriks server for you. I guess I'm just not understanding why you would want to jb then go back to 4.0.2. All that release did was block the jbme exploit you will have no benefit by going back to it over 4.1.

because from what i have seen at the apple store and personal experiences from my friends iphones thats are on iOS 4.1, their iphones tend to have jerky transitions and slower performances, not by a lot but enough to annoy you sometimes.

I believe that's what I wrote, yes.

so if i were to restore back to a firmware i want later with the shsh blobs on thats already saved, i would do so thru itunes like usual or would i have to use tinyumbrella to restore back?

cellular data network missing?

I just upgraded from 4.0.2 to 4.1 while maintaining the old baseband with TU, then applied limera1n, and installed cydia and ultrasn0w. I'm using a t-mobile sim card. Now it takes a good 20-30 seconds to load about General --> Network, and when I do, 'cellular data network' is missing. Any ideas? At the moment I can't use T-zones.

EDIT: Just found this and it worked!!

Firstly, make sure ur phone is fully jailbroken and unlocked. Confirm this by making a call.

Next, go to settings->general->network.
Make sure Cellular data is ON.

Now stay in the same screen, remove ur sim.
A new popup notification will appear: No sim installed.

DO NOT PRESS 'OK'.

Re-insert the sim now.

'Cellular data network' option will now be visible.

Enter the correct APN inside, u should be good to go.

Hey,

I downloaded limera1n. Did the stuff, got to the recovery mode stuff. Then iTunes pops in the way of my damn limera1n window and I don't know when to release the power button. Amidst the confusion, the JB failed, and I'm now restoring my iPhone through iTunes, I've lost everything though.

Will a JB still work this second time round? This time I just make the iTunes window smaller and out of the way <.<

Call him what you want but the guy knows his stuff! I have a 3gs and was mighty pissed the Greenpoison didnt include 3gs owners too! Keep on pulling out these surprises Geohot!! The jailbreak rocks and works perfectly by the way!

I'm just glad we finally are rid of those annoying rogue pixels on bootup/respring that we had with jailbreakme.

Since last night, limera1n BETA3 has worked perfectly for me using SBSettings, BiteSMS (BETA 5.0 only - 4.99 doesn't work). SnapTap, Lockinfo, Fiveicondock.

No issues at all, and maintained baseband by using TinyUmbrella.

Will Tiny Umbrella preserve the baseband on an older bootrom 3GS if I udate to v4.1 and JB with limera1n?

I bought my iPhone through AT&T in August 2009 and JB v3.1.2 iOS using blackra1n and unlocked v05.11.07 baseband using blacksn0w.

thelatinist gave me some good advice in this thread but I'm just curious. I read so much in the past two days that I'm just a little unsure of what to be sure about.

Thanks...

No tu can only do that with iPhone 4 you have to wait for a different jb tool to be released if you want to preserve the baseband on your 3gs

Can someone help me? I need MyWi for tomorrow, and I updated to 4.1 and my jailbreak is not working.
-iPhone 4
-Stock 4.1 (updated, not restored not tinyumbrella)
-Limera1n
I went through all of the process, but the Limera1n icon is not there. There's not even a black icon for it. It's just not there.
What am I doing wrong?
