I need a little advice. My wife and I both have iPhone 16GB 3GSs bought within a week of each other in Aug 2009. They are both running v3.1.2 (7D11) iOS and have 05.11.07 baseband (Modem Firmware). I have mine Jailbroken and unlocked with blackra1n and blacksn0w since Sept. 2009 and have never had a problem and Cydia has my blobs. My wife has remained stock and has never Jailbroken her phone for fear it wouldn't be as dependable as she relies on it heavily. I have used Tiny Umbrella to backup her blobs and will Jailbreak her iPhone when I sell it or when she finally gives in. :D

My question is this, what do you think is the best route to take to upgrade both iPhones to v4.1 iOS (there are apps we both want but are only able to run on v4.0 or higher) and still be able to sell our iPhones after our contract expires in March 2011.

I'm not sure (and I really am confused) about what Greenp0ison will bring for 3GS owners with my 05.11.07 baseband (Modem Firmware). I'm willing to give limera1n a try if Greenp0ison leaves me behind.

Thanks in advance...

This is a very simple question to answer. You should wait for the update to PwnageTool and upgrade using a custom 4.1 firmware. You will need to jailbreak your wife's phone at 3.1.2 (I suggest using redsn0w, but blackra1n would work) before upgrading it using the same custom firmware.

This will preserve your 05.11.07 baseband and your ability to unlock the phones using ultrasn0w.

I'd be surprised if it didn't work under virtualization, I've always ran them under VMWare and never had any issues. Parallels should be fine though I've never tested it there.

Make sure you have iTunes installed, it is required. (On the Windows partition or VM Disk, obviously, not just on your Mac!)

In fact I had an old 3G that refused to update to iOS 4 on my Mac and I actually ended up doing it under Windows via VMWare Fusion and it worked flawlessly.

Just tried in VM and it didnt work. It went through all the steps and said congradulations, but no Cydia. Tried twice.

I tried with parallels and VMware(windows XP) without success too.

In DFU mode, maybe the VM doesn't see the iPhone.

Can somebody give me some exact instructions? I can't get it to work on my ipod touch 4G. I plugged it in and click main it rain and it just says "waiting for device" and then I put it in DFU mode and it says "in DFU mode...waiting" or something like that.

So is anyone here willing to do a full restore through iTunes, from a LimeRa1n jailbroken state, to check if Engadget's claims are true or not?

Someone would have to have the App Store app missing when they jailbreak. I haven't seen anyone else post about that bug yet.

They didn't claim that the App disappears after jailbreaking and then restoring, which is what you seem to think they said. They lost their apps when jailbreaking, and attempted a restore to get them back and they remained lost. Jare's test doesn't disprove what they found.

Sorted! :D

I keep reading conflicting information, some sites list the JB as supporting all iphones, some say all but 3GS and some say all but 3G. Which ones correct? I have a 3G and tried it but it would not go past DFU mode, not sure if it's something I did wrong or indeed Ipnone 3G is not supported...
Anyone successfully JB'd the 3G on 4.1? I can't even do it with redsn0w...I'll get a message stating completed but the phone screen just stays blank and after rebooting, everything's the same...

Supposedly all devices are now supported as of Beta 3. Beta 1 & 2 excluded the new bootrom 3GS.

Try Beta 3 if you haven't already.

known bugs
some people must reboot to see Cydia
some people still don't have windows
beta iOS versions aren't supported
iPod Touch 2G support coming soon
for 3G, use redsn0w
limera1n app is a white box, i know. use it anyway

If I use limera1n to JB my iPhone 4 can it still be synced like normal on Mac OS X?

just want to make sure before I do anything silly.

For those of you that already have a jailbroken 4.0 device and plan on upgrading to 4.1, how are you able to do this while not losing all of your jailbroken data?

You always lose your JB data and packages when you update firmware.
You can install them back after or use pkgbackup to install them all at once for ya once you're done JB the new iOS.

Thanks, saw that this morning now, wasn't there last nite while i was trying to use the JB...

Is iTunes installed? Is it the latest version?

it worked for me with iTunes 9.2. you have to open limera1n and then click install cydia. then reboot and it will be there. it went very smooth for me but I did have to restart my iPhone after the initial jb said it was done. it did not restart on its own.

sorry for the noobish question here, but could someone possibly link me/tell me how to upgrade to 4.1? i'm already jailbroken on 4.0.2 or whatever it is on an iphone 4, and i have my apps backed up with pkgbackup.

quick question about the windows version of limera1n...

ok, this may be a basic and stupid question, but i am new at this, so pardon me.....with this being a windows version and mac and linux coming later, does that mean that for us users who have macs and sync our IP4's via those macs, we CAN'T use this to JB our phones yet? or does it mean we have to just do it on a PC (yuk)?

Do I need to update to 4.1 using TinyUmbrella or can I use the regular itunes update?

If you have an iPhone 4 and want to be able to unlock it, use TU to upgrade without upgrading your baseband, or do as the Dev Team says and wait for the new PwnageTool.

The new baseband is currently unable to be unlocked and there are no exploits for it yet. If you upgrade it carelessly, there's a chance you'll be waiting a very long time on for an unlock. Even if you'll never use it yourself, an unlock adds good money on resale.

I have updated to 4.1 from 4.0 on my iPhone4. I used tiny umbrella to preserve the 1.59.00 baseband so I can go back to 4.0 if I decide to sell it in the future and want it unlocking. Does anyone know if ultrasn0w will work on 4.1 with the 1.59.00 baseband? I currently have no need to unlock it nor do I have any other microsims to try it. It would be nice to know if I have the option though.

Is Cydia supposed to be this slow? It's at least 10 times slower than the App Store.

I have the old Spirit Jailbreak and I've noticed that Cydia is indeed slower to load today. I think their servers are just getting overwhelmed because of all the people trying to update and reinstall cydia after the Limera1n JB. Maybe it'll normalize after a few days.
