the lines won't be "huge"
I agree. This is an incremental upgrade to a 10mo old device that sold 15M units already. Apple did a few shifty things in order to give the appearance of extreme demand and build buzz (5PM on a friday is a scumbag move mainly to draw the attention of mallwalkers) but in the end this is still a luxury device who's entry-price is $500. People out here wont admit that they don't "need" an iPad but in a tough economy then the average consumer would (hopefully)give it a few days to think about where they should be throwing their money.

I will admit I don't "need" one. I don't need most of the things I do have, but I do want one and plan to buy one today.

I think it's a good idea to be pessimistic (always) about this.

That way, if the wait is like 40 minutes you calculate it as a success.

(40 is tops for this bird) ;)

Thanks Sky. I work a few blocks away any idea on if you can update us at about 5?? I plan to leave right after work.

i'm leaving work at 5 and will get there around 5:30. i'm picturing hundreds in line - ugh - last time on day 1 the lines weren't huge at all - i had reserved one - but the demand probably wasn't as big as now and i bet inventory is in short supply today. we'll see.

A now downplayed (and debunked by other analysts) dated MARCH 1 article (before the iPad 2 was even announced) and Online shipping dates? Relevance to in store sales today please?

Do you have any links to these analysts that you speak of?

Well... Are you aware that orders placed online are already being pushed out 2-3 weeks? I wouldn't just assume that you are going to be able to just mosey into an Apple store and get what you want. Just sayin'

Who know's how lines will be. However, my take is that with so many outlets offering them, most likely they won't be near as dramatic as last year. Plus the online shipping is an estimate. It is also being reported that Apple may also be shippng them earlier than the estimate time. Makes sense they would hedge their bet against possible online slam if it materializes.

I just drove by the Aspen Grove store in Denver, there were about 6 people outside of the store. It is a nice mild morning too, temperatures are in the upper 50s.

Its 45 degrees here and raining fairly heavily. I'm not near any apple store to see the lines but you'd need to be hard core to wait lines outside in this raw wet day.

they probably didn't have enough supply for a week's worth of pre-orders.

its an incremental upgrade only if you have the first one - if you don't then its a pretty nice product - better than anything else out there especially at the price. the release after the initial launch is usually incremental - doesn't make financial sense to completely change a new product.

Very well said, couldn't agree with you more.

Good luck. Both Apple stores here already have lines 50 deep and that is with 7 hours to go. Best Buy here also has a line. Lines are going to be huge today.

Apple stores are likely to have gotten hundreds, if not thousands of ipads per store. Worst case you wont be able to get the 16gb white wifi model if the 200 people ahead of you happened to want that same model. Aside from that standing in line is more about having fun and the experience than stock availability.

Me, I'm stopping at a local at&t store o@ 6pm on my way to the apple store to see if I can save me the drive over.

It can't be as bad as it was the first time the iPad launched and won't be close to a iPhone launch so I don't expect too much trouble. Plan to get there 90 minutes or so beforehand. As long as the stores are well stocked I don't see a problem. I know they want big numbers for the launch day so they better have them on hand or it's going to make them look bad. Ideally they won't sell out so that everyone who wants one gets one.

might stop by the 14st store at 5 to see if i can snag one quick and go home. otherwise i have to spend the weekend driving from store to store.

You're engaging in a logical fallacy. We have no idea whether the online wait times have anything to do with in-store availability. In fact, the more logical conclusion based on the evidence we've seen so far suggests the opposite conclusion: that Apple is focusing on retail store sales to the detriment of online ordering, not the other way around.
