Samsung Semi is probably very happy as they make money off the OLED displays Apple is using. But it’s a safe bet to think Samsung Mobile is not happy at all. Unless you think companies are happy when competitors are selling record numbers of devices that compete directly against your best devices.

I don't think a competitor "dies with envy" when a predictable product launches. There are no surprises here. New products are announced each year, so why would Samsung be "unhappy". If I were them, I would actually be happy for the following reason:
  • recognizing that we are ahead since this "new" product is just catching up with a lot of things we already have.
  • the competition wasn't able to update their whole product line... no plus size or competitor to the Note line, and most of the lineup is old designs.
  • they are struggling to produce high volume, so potentially an opportunity to sell more through holidays.
  • the new "big" feature is FaceID which is proving to be controversial, and can be a product differentiator since we already have it plus iris and touch (remember an average consumer will see facial recognition checked on both products.
  • Android and iOS continue to converge in ability/stability
  • We are still selling many more than they are
  • Oh yeh, they are buying more parts from us now for their phones... so win-win

So no, I don't think Samsung is mad and dying with envy. They are busy readying their next round of products.

It is amazing. Despite all of the hate and negativity towards Apple, what other company has people camping out to buy their products? Only thing that comes to mind are sports venue tickets for certain events.

What other corporation has multiple "Rumors" sites with people hanging on every shred of information?

Walk by a Microsoft store someday. I actually feel sorry for the lonely people working there and often spend a few minutes talking to them. ;)

As someone who used a 1985 vintage Macintosh, watched Apple sink into the depths of irrelevancy, product launches like this are astonishing.

Looks like MacRumors got bamboozled by the "Instagram user". Hope they correct the article soon, because this makes them look like they're intentionally hyping the X.

Or someone just made a mistake, because that happens from time to time...

Or a full page ad somewhere.

Why? They make the screens so when Apple makes revenue Samsung makes revenue.

I agree 100%. Everyone says the S9 will copy FaceID. Uh hello? They’ve been doing facial recognition. All they have to say is “we’ve made our facial recognition with Iris Scanning even better with 3D capabilities, and you still have a choice between facial or fingerprint.”

Nice spin.

  • OLED screens were terrible for many years with issues from burn in to color change over time. Apple isn’t “catching up” - they’re incorporating a technology after it’s finally improved to the point to meet their standard.
  • Apple doesn’t need a competitor to ge Note live since people don’t care about stylus. Which is why the Note is a niche market and why Samsung doesn’t offer OEM support on their best selling models.
  • Struggling? Another rumor that gets recycled every single year and turns out to be false. Meanwhile Apple goes on to sell record numbers despite all these supposed manufacturing difficulties.
  • FaceID isn’t controversial. A few loud-mouthed naysayers don’t speak for the majority.
  • Android and iOS are converging? Sure. Let me know when 80% of iOS devices no longer receive security updates. Or when you have to wait 6 months for the next version of iOS to hit your device. The Note 8 and S8 won’t even get Oreo until 2018. Androi d a s a complete and utter joke for updates. And iOS is superior for App quality and selection. They’re not even close.
  • Selling more? Outright lie. You have zero proof of this.
  • I already said Samsung Semi is happy with parts orders, not sure why you’re repeating what I said.

Are you forgetting how useless Samsung versions are? Fooling facial recognition with a picture? Or iris scan with a picture and generic contact lens?

That’s about as stupid as saying a Ferrari is nothing special because the Model T had 4 tires and a steering wheel years ago.

Depends how you look at it. Samsung make oil-rigs and bulldozers that they consider best in class. How are Apple stacking up against those devices?

Fake news using fake pictures. Disappointing. There may well be queues, but some of these pictures are years old.

Think harder... how about Beanie Babies, Wii, Playstation, or how about pretty much anything on Black Friday at Walmart, Best Buy, Target...

There are plenty of "rumors" sites... they don't just call them all rumors sites. And the fact that people are "hanging on every shred of information" I think is indicative of Apple's withholding choices, updates, etc.. which creates more hype. If you like iOS, you have one place to buy a phone, and they haven't released a new design since the 6... so guess what... the fans are hyped.

You really need to get to a different Microsoft Store. The one in our mall is quite active all the time and there are people spilling out in the mall area playing games. A big chunk of the people in Apple Stores are in queue waiting for repairs.... which is something that Apple does well... having a place like that to get service.

Proof that some people are stark raving mad. Line up for a phone? Dumb as bricks. Get a real life fan people.

i can see singaporeans lining up for launch day cause it is their first apple store and they are finally able to get stuff on launch day

Now, I'm wondering if the Singapore one is from this year as well or an old one like the Covent Garden one. The other pictures seem to show that there's not that much interest in lining up. Admittedly, a line could be said to 'swell', if it goes from 2 to 5, but from here, it looks like people aren't that interested. Guess one man's glass half full is someone else's half empty.

The Singapore Apple store just opened in May of this year. I guess it could be the queue for the grand opening but wouldn’t be for any previous phone launches.

^ It's like raving without the drugs.

I remember I went to Together As One in Dec 31, 2000. TOA. Largest rave party because it included LA Coliseum and LA Sports Arena. I was about 20 but it was INSAAAANE. I remember one of my buddies told me LA Coliseum used to host the Olympics but now it became one big techno club for addicts. LOL. Ravers = hippies.

I have flashbacks with a bunch of Asian kids sitting around like that. We used to call them e-puddles while they rolled on E. Not into that PLUR crap anymore. Most of those kids have no class in college (Fri), no job, and probably relying on mommy and daddy.

At 36, I got a limit. I watch people in Europe hanging out in the cold. I would not do it if weather is bad. Thank goodness weather is going to be cool for tomorrow here in Orange County. Good luck for tomorrow. It's going to be insane. Most exciting iPhone launch in seven years, if not, ever!

I didn’t know Samsung Mobile made oil-rigs and bulldozers.
Do you really think "Samsung Mobile" is an autonomous, not linked to, nothing to do with the great big bad Samsung? Perhaps you do and that's how you justify Samsung parts in iPhones because that's "Samsung Electronics" not heaven forbid the "Samsung group". I love the way fan-boys can compartmentalize the competition in their minds so not to affect their "believes".
