I've already got the GM

So I've been using the GM for a while now, really like it. I'm due to get Lion for free since I just bought an iMac. Any idea on how I'll be able to make my copy "legit," or will it even matter? I know it the past it didn't matter because it was disc based. What about this new app store delivery? I just don't want to have to have my Mac serviced one day and then get some sort of "Well you stole this OS so you're screwed, bub."

Only Lion has been mentioned. New MBAs or other hardware updates have not.

I wonder if they'll drag out the new releases to keep themselves in the tech media spotlight for longer.

I think with ipad3, iphone5, and iCloud they have enough stuff to keep them in the spotlight.... now a new 50" apple tv would be nice!!

See here to be legit:

If you're referring to removing the GM and going with the public version, I'm not sure.

QUESTION:i've got a quick question for anyone that know about the taxes and stuff in Ontario's Mac App Store policies. I've gotta buy itunes gift cards for credit in my Mac App Store seeing as I don't have access to a credit card and I was wondering if they charge taxes on Mac App Store purchases?

I'm in Ontario too. We get charged tax for purchases on the app store. Should cost around $33.89 with taxes (13%).

Mac OS X 10.7 GM & Question

Guys & Ladies,

I installed the GM release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion from a guy and I'm wanting to know after you click on ''shut down'' is there suppose to be a white/grey screen before the laptop shuts off? Other than that it works fine.

Another question I am wanting to buy and download Lion tomorrow when they release the software in the Mac App Store...Should I download it over the GM version? I don't have a copy of Mac OS X 10.7 GM. Just make a back up?

Send an apology letter to Apple with a check attached. They'll take care of the rest.

You shouldn't have installed it illegally to begin with. Unfortunately, unless a developer here wishes to be ultra nice and help you get out of your not-so-legit status, you'll be installing SL and upgrading.

Looking forward to this tomorrow! Gonna do a clean install when I've downloaded it. :)

Will the GM not update to 10.7.1? Or I might have misunderstood . . .

Got me, as I'm not a developer and never installed the developer versions. I'm sure some developer here knows.

Of course, I likely misunderstood the question as well.

I imagine if you're a developer you should be covered somehow.

Seriously, tomorrow?

Too soon for me. I just finished my migration yesterday and got my preferences just right on my brand new 27" iMac, now this?

Oh well, at least I'll be getting Lion for free. Now I just have to figure out how to put it on an external drive of some sort so I can clean install it on my iMac and do the entire song and dance again.

1st World problems...

Definitely it is coming to America first for sure.

Can you give me a reason? Or is it simply because America is the greatest nation of them all and deserves the best and only the best.

Sorry, this may seem harsh but some of you people need to get off your high horse.

Of course I'm sure I'll be eating my words in a few hours time.

I'd agree, but maybe they limit you to updates delivered via the dev program. I'm not sure how that works.

From a Windows perspective (I'm a TechNet member), the public updates apply fine to the non-public versions but you retain your original key. Since OS X (non-server) doesn't do any of that, I'd guess the updates will apply.

Now the question of being "legit" are still there, as I'm guessing it still labels itself as the dev version. I'm sure Apple won't throw you the public copy because you're a dev. I guess the real question is if the public build will upgrade your dev version.

Because Apple is American..

Yes, but they're not expected until end of August / September. If they release Lion on the Mac App store tomorrow, they'll get tech media headlines tomorrow, and probably for a few days to come, which will increase sales beyond MacRumours readers and Mac fans for a short time.

If they were to hold back the hardware for a week or two, they'd get some more tech media headlines in a week or two as well, with more positive press / free advertising, generating more sales (beyond MacRumours readers and Mac fans) again.

Edit: But I hope the hardware comes tomorrow

Not true. I've been able to install various beta builds of Lion on top of each other, no problems. The same will likely apply here.

Well it's well into the 20th here, but I'm booted into Windows 7 and now I can't be bothered restarting to see if Lion is in the NZ AppStore yet - it should be technically. The iOS AppStore has shown NZ-first releases almost across the board. And we've always got OS X releases first in the past - sad that digital release should see the end of that happy trend.

It was a total guess on my part. What nobody has confirmed is if you can go from a dev GM release to the public release.

Apparently America is the best at reading comprehension. :)
