What's your situation in relation to a MacBook Pro?

And on that 9to5mac article, it all seems highly likely although I can't tell whether that keyboard's from the MBA or not; they've not exactly said what it's of.
It really looks like it's from the Air, and seeing as they don't make a big deal about it, I'm guessing it is.

I know this is a hot topic, but personally, I think I'd like the Air-keyboard incorporated in the MBP :)

You can add me to the list.

I would love to see a redesign badly..

LED for 17"
new keyboard
Thinner ? maybe thinner led display? or Solid State drives making it thinner.
Faster Video Card
USB 3.0 ? or Equivalent Firewire port
BlueRay Burner Drive

Only CPU and Graphic Card...

I don't know when the new one would come, but I do hear something.....

Everything will be the same except for CPU and Graphic Card upgrading..
No multi-touch trackpad and no LED for 17 inch.

....:(

That image is definitely from a MBA. Unless everything has been redesigned. I don't understand the obsession with Blu-Ray. Am I just anti-Sony or does no one else see the economic advantages of HD DVD?

I am a new user here but I am in need of a new :apple: MBP. I cracked my screen on my MB back in December :( and decided to wait and just buy a new MBP. ........*waiting*..........:(

Time to switch cell phone companies and get yourself an iphone...thats really gonna push your dad over the edge.
Haha....I wish but I just got my N73 last August and I bought extended 3 year warranty on it so no dice until Apple releases their like iPhone 4 :p Plus, the iPhone was not (and still isn't) available in Canada and unlocking was out of the question back in August, it was too complicated.

It's all good. I still have my computer which is a custom-made PC used mostly for gaming, so I doubt that will be replaced with a Mac any time soon. I just need a powerful laptop that can do gaming moderately on the road (plus, it's gotta be stylish and other than Apple laptops, I'm not aware of any stylish laptops out there)

It does not matter the advantages of HD-DVD (I'm not even aware of any at this point ) but Blu-Ray has majority market share (90%+). It's gonna be a slow death for HD-DVD. (I just hate HD-DVD because Microsoft and Toshiba support it and I absolutely hate both companies...Microsoft for its OS, Toshiba for its laptops and what anguish I'm going through because of their laptops)

17 inch MBP with 7200 RPM drive

the drive speed is the key for me -
getting the MBP whenever the new ones come out ...

and - it'll be my first Mac - since I owned a Lisa.

would love to hear performance numbers from the "air" - and their SSD ...

anyone know?

The advantage is for the manufacturer. HD DVD is less than half as expensive than Blu-Ray both to switch mfg facilities and for mass production. Also, the only reason Blu-Ray exists at this point, IMO, is because of the dying PS3. Although I share for hatred for M$ and Toshiba, I still what to be able to purchase movies for less than $20. I still think the FCC is just going to have to step in and pick a winner, this time we can't count on the porn industry to decide which format to use.

First off it sounds like even if you get to Detroit, they probably won't help much because those chipped edges and multiple hardware problems would definitely suggest physical damage, which is something that Apple is very serious about not covering. I am not saying you accidentally damaged it, but if you did and they can tell, they won't be able to give you any free repairs. By the problems you mentioned, it does sound like you might have dropped it a few times, if not, then if you are under warranty you should either go to the store or send it in to AppleCare.
As far as the upgrade to MBP, it really depends if the bigger hard drive and video card are worth the extra $700+ to you. Its definitely a nicer machine, and it might last longer than a MacBook. I just sold my first generation MBP from Jan06 so I can buy a new MBP when they are updated, but the one I sold definitely could have given me a few more solid years. You'll benefit from a bigger, higher resolution screen, backlit keyboard, faster processor, bigger hard drive, some extra ports, and dedicated graphics card. If that to YOU isworth the extra money as opposed to a new MacBook, then by all means go for it. But this decision really lies on you, its going to be your purchase and your machine, so give it some good thought while we all wait for an updated MBP.
Hope that helps.

Appreciate the response. That is my fear, they will assume I've dropped it, when in reality I think I got a bit careless by throwing it in my backpack and kinda getting careless with it. I forgot about the backlit keyboard, I really liked that feature too. I'm going down to the store next week, if they take care of me, I think I will get the MBP for when school starts next year. If not, I'll buy some decent $600 Vista (yuck) laptop to play around with, and eventually get a mac mini.

Just one question though - as I haven't been reading too much into the MBP updates: are there any chances of a price drop? I apoligize if this was discussed somewhere between pages 1-36.

Thanks again,
Bryan

Someone try and sway me. I currently use a macbook, and take good care of it, but my edges are chipped, my cd-rom drive doesn't work half the time, and my screen doesn't work unless i put pressure on the top left corner of it. My first problem is the nearest apple store is two hours away in Detroit.

I really, really like it, but I think it is a hassle, esp. for the small hard drive size and integrated video memory. I want to upgrade to a MBP (and hopefully it gets new specs), but don't know if I can justify the $1700+ (student discuont) baseline specs.

Can someone sway me?

sounds like you may need to be swayed from the belief that you "take good care of it", given you describe it as having chipped edges. that kind of damage requires some effort, or an admirable amount of negligence.

never mind; i guess a backpack could bang it up but good...

i'm hoping for a price drop on outgoing models (and have in past updates seen blowouts on remaining stock of outgoing mbp's at cdw and other resellers), and then the "weighing game" will replace the "waiting game"...

Well apple is sending me my new laptop (long story, different post). They are going through the normal online retail chain so they put the order in today with a ship date between the 1st through the 5th. I wonder if it will be a new model if apple plans to release a new one on tuesday :)

What I saw on the AI site:

"Gartner: Apple to claim over 12% of US PC market by 2011
Apple Inc. will see its share of the US personal computer market increase twofold over the next three years from 6.1 percent to over 12 percent, according Gartner.
"

I hope :apple: is aware that they will not succeed if they continue to be late in releasing next generation products
