What's your situation in relation to a MacBook Pro?

You may be the coolest 11 year-old alive! I don't see why you would have a problem with the 13" personally but whatever works.

May I make a suggestion though... Because of your age I would suggest the MacBook Air and here's why: weight! Believe me, that kind of weight will affect your back, and if you plan on carrying your MBP to school you will notice it. I have backpacked over 1000 miles so far and have royally screwed up my back from carrying too heavy a load for my size/age, that mixed in with 10-12 years of Ju Jitsu and Filipino Martial Arts can really cause problems. I applaud your drive in this matter, but at your age there is nothing that the MBA couldn't handle. The X3100 will do most graphics work in a snap and you probably aren't using any really processor intensive apps (i.e. Photoshop CS3, Maya, Final Cut, Aperture).

And not to call your parents liars, but I don't know if they will actually let you do it. My parents did the same thing to me with an Xbox, a guitar (I got it eventually) and multiple previous attempts to purchase an iBook and then a MBP, but never allowed me to buy one. I wish you luck, and if you don't mind me asking, what do you do to get the funds?

if you think the difference in weight between an macbook (or a macbook pro) and the macbook air is actaully going to screw up your back (if you are even calling the macbook or the mbp heavy) then you must either be a) very weak b) extremely misinformed of the weight of the macbook or mbp

haha, agreed.

I always get a good laugh when posters write a bible-like essay about the weight factor.

guy 1: dude, stop being a pansy. man up and carry that extra 1.243 lbs.
guy 2: oh em gee! that extra 1.243 lbs might not seem a lot to you, but i travel a lot and it makes a difference *cries*
guy 1: there there. sorry sweet heart. here's your pacifier.
guy 2: *suck suck*

I have a lot of experience in this, believe me it makes a difference at that age. I have had multiple doctors tell me the same thing. I am also calculating in the weight of her other school things, average of 20 lbs total. A study was done in the early part of this decade that said the average elementary and 6th grade student should carry no more than 15 lbs. on their back. Even the walk home after school could be enough to put serious strain on the spine, altering the way muscles grow and function. My mother suffers from a similar ailment because of golfing and carrying her clubs too much when she was 12, because of this the muscles that control certain movements of her shoulder blades are effectively dead. I will find the study and send you a link. I also have a lot of experience training myself and others for extremely long trips where heavy weight is involved and I can tell when the weight difference in my pack is as small as 8 oz. I have seen and live with the consequences of overloading yourself at an early age and I wish I had known then what I know now. I am not misinformed about this issue, I know my stuff and I truly care about this. And don't even think about calling me (or the 11 year old I am trying to help) weak. When you hike 75 miles at 10,000 feet elevation carrying 60+ lbs of gear on your back at over 4 mph, talk to me and maybe I'll forgive you for what you implied.

seriously. If you want to lose the weight that you are carrying on your back, then don't take the laptop to school. Also, I've been carrying more than I was supposed to as a child pretty much every day at school (thanks unencessarily large math textbooks) and I've been fine. If you honestly think that 1.243 lbs. (taken from the post above, which I couldn't agree more with) is going to make a difference, then you seem to take things a little too literally. If you really want to cut back on the weight that somebody is carrying around, how about you remove the laptop entirely (and I can hardly fathom why somebody who is 11 years old would need to take a laptop to school anyway, unless things have really changed since I was in 5th grade?)

sorry, maybe I'm not qutie as "informed" about this as you, but I have a hard time believing that 1.2 pounds is going to be the difference between a normal life and a massively bent spine

:apple:I agree...don't carry around the laptop if it isn't needed. Carrying it around is more of a chance it could get broken also!!!! So...everyone lets play nice and speculate some more about them :apple: MBP's instead of how much we should carry on our backs!!!! :D Who agrees with me?

The WAITING is the HARDEST PART !!!!

I WANT MY PENRYN MBP NOW! :p

But knowing how it's getting so close...a few months at the most... I'm sure it'll be worth it. I don't care 'cause there's NO WAY I'm gonna be tricked into getting the top-line model now, for it to be downgraded after 14 days have passed.

That's what happenned to me last time and boy did that bum me out. So, my fellow MBP aficionados, I'm sitting tight.

Anyways, it's a bit exciting just knowing it's right around the corner - Just building up that anticipation factor for a worthwhile climax.

Yeaaaah, baby! :D

Not to Worry...

Did you read what they write on that site??

Quote/MiniBatteryLogger spotted the upcoming MacBook Pro (Late 2008)./Unquote :mad:

LATE 2008 - I hope that's a joke

I was curious about the 'late 2008' reference so I emailed the guy who runs the site and he replied:

Me: Why did you say 'Late 2008' when you mention that 'MiniBatteryLogger spotted the upcoming MacbookPro'? Since it hasn't been released yet, how do you know it is not going to be early or mid 2008? Or do you know something everyone else does not? ;)

Guy: Where did I say "Late 2008" ?? :O

Me: It was in the banner at the very top of the website, but now it's gone... did you remove this?

Guy: Yeah... it was a mistake. I've removed it because I don't want trouble with Apple. They're upset enough for the leak :)

...So this is good news, the late 2008 reference is not valid...

wow, you managed to capture the essence of your excitement in a post. I hate to be a negative nancy but with i think you will be greatly disappointed with the update.

I just thought I'd throw this idea out there. For anyone who is annoyed that this revision will not be a redesign. (it will not, in case you were still asking)

I was initially somewhat perturbed as I have not bought a laptop in 7 years, and if I buy something I want to run it into the ground and so buying something at it's introduction means it will last for longer and continue to be competitive.

I don't think this applies with the Montevina revision scheduled for the second half of 2008. Benefits are going to minor. We will have penryn cpu's and therefore longer battery life in a couple of weeks. I doubt apple is going to introduce wimax. ddr3 doesn't make a difference. the macbook will benefit from the x4500, but not the mbp...

so you are left with usual incremental updates to graphics adapter (bound to be underclocked) and cpu. and one significant advantage, the logic board footprint is shrunk by 25% - 40% (depending on source)

My point is, I can live with missing out on a redesign, since the machine itself is not going to change significantly performance wise.

So there you have it. If you can see any blaring holes in my argument, i'd be interested to know. I am just killing time, my credit card, staring me in the face... ;)

Cool analysis. I personally am looking for a graphics card update.

can you explain why ddr3 won't make a difference?

Greatly disappointed? Nah, doubt it!

Slightly disappointed, yeah, perhaps. :p

Whatever that upgrade might be, I'll take it. It'll still push my *upgraded* MBP farther away from the obsolescense timeline. :)

Will I be dissapointed when the redesign revision does finally come around? Of course.

However, I cannot justify waiting yet another 6 months (or however many months for whatever cycle comes next for the MBP) for that. I have already been waiting since september just for this release, and I have to say, that I would not choose to put myself through another one of these situations. It's already painful now.

apart from the ddr3's issues with increased latency of ddr2, it's advantages are increased bandwidth (a negligible benefit for core 2 duo) and power-saving for increased battery life. It is otherwise a nil affair.

Not to say I wouldn't take it, but it's not worth hanging out for.

As for a graphics update. I wouldn't hold my breath, but at the same time we could be pleasantly surprised. There is no (physical) reason apple couldn't throw in an 8600 GTS, they use the same wattage and are essentially the same except for being clocked higher on the GTS. Apple *could* offset power saving from the penryn and redirect them at the GTS. Just saying... Apple!

he is rather sure that there is not going to be a revision for at least a couple of months, since there was an update in November.

well there was but there really wasn't. They just added the option of a faster processor because it became available. I was surprised at the time, since the processors were getting cheaper, they didn't just bump the speed up across the line and keep the price, instead of charging extra for the 2.6GHz (which they still do).

I don't call that an upgrade.

Out here in sunny Singapore they're offering macbook pros with 4Gb RAM for an extra 99 dollars (60 USD) instead of the usual huge cost. I'm hoping that's the start of a stock clearing exercise.

lol Seriously you guys can't be complaining about weight. I can understand not wanting to mess up your back and all, but even the heaviest Mac notebook isn't much. I remember carrying ass-loads of books in H.S. Sure, it sucked, but my back is fine (*knock on wood*)

If you really think carrying a MBP is heavy then I suggest you take a man pill every morning from now on and start watching "Commando" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I copied the conversation word for word, so I guess it's open for interpretation. But my feeling is he was saying that 'it was a mistake to make such assumptions' given that apple may have already been upset about the MacBookPro4,1 'leak'.

The 'Late 2008' or 'Late 2007' labels do not appear in the logs themselves, so I think it is something that he would have had to add himself.

forget I said anything, sorry for caring and letting my guard down. Maybe you manly men can show me the true path to studliness...

The fact that Apple was upset about this information leak leads me to believe that it is indeed true and something is coming, and SOON. I doubt Apple would care if false information got out. YEAH THATS RIGHT....IT'S COMING!!!

The end of the world is coming, do we know when? No. But we keep waiting like little kids in a candy store, just begging for more.
